The Sox cap on top of the Picasso is very cool. Pablo would approve. He was a Sox Fan, too.

It's a well known fact the City of Chicago offered Picasso several gifts while trying to induce him into accepting the commission for the sculpture in the Civic Center plaza. One of the gifts was a Sox uniform.

Picasso hated losers.

Sorry can't share pics for yo right now, but I was down there this morning. It was a fun day, seeing so many people taking pictures of all the statues with Sox stuff on. I was wearing my Sox jacket and high-fived quite a few Sox fans who were wearing anything Sox.

From what I read, he received a ton of money and a Sox jacket... He gave back the money.

Very interesting. Doesn't prove anything and as you have no bibliographical reference I find the story to have an apocryphal ring. In addition, as there seem to be another version of the story floating around I'd have to ask for additional clarification. In any case, a well known fact, as evidenced by the fact that the Daleys are from Bridgeport is that the Mayor's office is occupied mainly by Southsiders. This is true of Harold Washington as well. Hence, if a Mayor wanted to help Picasso Make up his mind and wanted to give him a gift with a little local color, he might have given him some Sox memorabilia. Doesn't quite make Pablo Picasso a Sox fan; but could give rise to the legend. Not really wanting to argue the point. Just found it a little strange to hear a man who disdained sports in general would become a fan of a foreign sport late in life. One, with nuances such that many immigrants who did not pick up the game early in life never understand.

BTW, LOVED THE PICTURE OF THE STATUE IN A SOX HAT!

I'm pretty sure Picasso had more interests in life than following a baseball team. However he was given a Sox uniform and he kept it. He never received a Cubs uniform nor presumably did he care to go buy one. Make what you will of it. The City of Chicago official website used to have a page concerning the history of the Chicago Picasso back in the early 90's and serves as the source which this website used to link to back in 1999 and 2000. In fact for years the very bottom of WSI's main page asked the question "Was Picasso a Sox Fan?" Too bad the Doubting Thomases of this world need to poke their fingers through Christ's wounds to believe anything...

I'm guessing you were still using a typewriter at the time, so you're forgiven for being so combative out of nothing more than pure ignorance.

Thanks. This is the BEST ONE of the bunch by far. The city has *never* done anything like this. The Picasso and Art Institute lions have been done to death, but our SOX get the extra special treatment...

What's the over/under on when these will be stolen, like the Bears helmets were during the Super Bowl?

OK, so if teal is sarcasm and pink is wishful thinking, which color represents "writing with a smile on one's face?" :D:

The Michael Jordan statue in front of the United Center had Sox gear last night, but my pictures were accidentally deleted from my camera.
