Ozzie Guillen named American League Manager of the Year by the Sporting News
CHICAGO -- Ozzie Guillen, who has guided the White Sox to their first World Series appearance since 1959, has been named American League Manager of the Year by The Sporting News.

Guillen, 41, led the White Sox to a 99-63 record in 2005, his second season as manager. The 99 wins tied the 1983 club for the second-highest total in franchise history (100 in 1917), while the 16-win improvement from 2004 was the largest in the AL.

The White Sox were in first place all 182 days of the season, breaking the franchise record of 169 set in 2000. The Sox owned the best record in the AL every day this season and the best mark in baseball every day from April 30-August 16.

The White Sox reached the Fall Classic for the fifth time in franchise history by sweeping the defending World Champion Boston Red Sox in the ALDS and defeating the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, four-games-to-one, in the ALCS. The Sox .875 (7-1) winning appearance thus far is tied with the 1969 New York Mets, 1970 Baltimore Orioles and 1984 Detroit Tigers for third-best in the postseason since 1969 with a minimum of eight games played. Guillen is the fourth Sox manager to be honored by The Sporting News, joining Tony LaRussa (1983), Jeff Torborg (1990) and Jerry Manuel (2000).

Congratulations Ozzie Guillen. I have only been a White Sox fan for 21 years but I have never seen a Sox manager been as respected and loose around the clubhouse. At times his manner and attitude has seemed like he is one of the players. You got to love that! Not only has Ozzie helped with the attitude in the clubhouse but he is a natural leader. I hope he stays in the White Sox dugout for many more years to come. Congratulations Ozzie and Good luck in the World Series!

Is this the official award or does the official award come from the BBWAA? I thought by now, they started announcing awards?

He took a team with low expectations from the outside and went wire to wire. That sounds like he earned the award to me (and I am not even an Ozzie fan).

Earlier today I purchased on Whitesox.com and authentic World Series jersey. It set me back two bills. I customized with #13 Ozzie on the back. I wanted "Ozzie" instead of "Guillen" because he's Ozzie!

Way to go Ozzie-you da man!

Congrats to Ozzie, but odd, schizophrenic behavior by The Sporting News, which a few weeks ago ranked him 12th out of 12 managers whose teams were in contention down the stretch.

Of course, TSN also predicted a Cards-Indians World Series.

I don't think this is the offical award handed out by MLB. Those awards are handed out in November after the World Series.

Supposedly, these awards are voted upon before the postseason begins.

TSN also said that there were 7,000 empty seats at The Cell for the ALDS:angry:

"Ozzie Guillen named American League Manager of the Year by the Sporting News"

This can't be true. From before this season, everyone in the media was saying that he's an idiot.

Seriously tho, congrats Oz!!!:bandance:

I have to admit that when the Sox hired Ozzie, I thought they were just hiring a fan-favorite who wouldn't last long. I'm very happy to admit I was wrong.

And while I'm admitting I was wrong about things, remember when the Sox hired Kenny Williams over what's his name? Danny Evans? I thought that was a terrible move at the time. Anyone still thing this was a bad move?

Hmmm....

Manuel - 2000
Torborg - 1990
LaRussa - 1983

Not sure on #4 or 5. I didn't think Lamont won it in '93. Maybe Chuch Tanner in '72 and Lopez in '59?

Tanner in '72, but I don't know about #5. I think the other guys had Frey and maybe Zimmer.

I'm not sure why mlb.com's list doesn't go any further back that 1983. Too much trouble for them :?:
