View Full Version : Who should throw out the 1st pitch?

Fantosme
10-16-2005, 11:43 PM
Who do you want to see throwing out the ceremonial 1st pitch in each of the home games?

Sox legends like Minoso?
Frank Thomas?
Kenny Williams?
Mayor Daley?
Al Lopez?
Members of the 94 team that got robbed?
Other?

Nice thought. But when Chris Meyers asked him to name the great players he has seen in 80 years of cheering for the Sox he named Ruth, Cobb, Speaker, DiMaggio not one a Sox.

Since the Big Hurt has already thrown out a first pitch then I say either Minnie Minoso or Luis Aparicio.

Do they announce the rosters at the beginning of Game 1 and have everybody come out to the baseline like they do at the ASG? If so, Frank will be announced then. Between that and the ALDS, that's why I moved Frank to game 7.

I thought about Hawk, but then somebody might think Farmio should be out there too. :o:

I think there are a few possibilities, most already mentioned, but the WS is big time and the pitch tends to go beyond local, not always but... having said that who I'd like to see/who it will probably be:

game 1 Mayor Daley/ Mayor Daley or GW Bush sorry, the prez shows up for this stuff.

game 2 Hawk/ Some celebrity with a tenuous relation to Chicago. I don't know if TV has something to say about the first pitch, but someone like this always pops up at these things.

Game 6 and 7 I just don't want to think that far ahead

Personally I would love to see Hawk throw out the first pitch for Game 1 or Game 2 (likely Game2). For me, Hawk lives and dies Whitesox baseball. It was painful at times last year to hear hawk sound almost suicidal as we collapsed. I would love to see him involved as much as possible in this :D:

I agree Frank should be involved as much as possible also. I hope he is enjoying this as much as everyone else, he has labored with this team for years and deserves a win.

I don't think Reinsdorf acknowledges much Sox history prior to his ownership. It might be Hawk, but it's also a perfect time for Reinsdorf to reach out to the past, and not just the Sox's past, but all of baseball, and have Al Lopez there, perhaps with Aparicio. It will not be Reinsdorf. He's smart enough to stay off the stage. Same goes for KW.

For what it's worth I was communicating with a member of the Sox organization today. The subject of 'first balls' came up. I said that I honestly hoped the Sox wouldn't draft any politicians or goofball Hollywood types to have the honor (like John Cusack or Bernie Mack...) The reply to this was that 'I wouldn't be disappointed' with their choices.

I suggested names in pairs (the better to get more folks involved) along the following themes:

Aparicio and a member of the Fox family...
Pierce and Minoso...
Comiskey III and Mike Veeck...
Allen and Wood...
Pall and Kittle (two Chicago guys from the area who rooted for the team then played on the team...)

I'm a little sentimental. MOst are very good picks. I know just one.. How about whoever is left from the 1959 team is honored. Then from themselves electing one person to throw out the first pitch. In each of the next game have the past owner's or their representatives and in game in game 6 another sox :supernana: , the mayor of chicago, Dailey and if it goes 7, Lisa Dergin and the______ There is no sentimentality in game 7 it is do or die.

I say Hugo Chavez for game one (kudos to the long-time Venezuelan-Sox connections including Guillen and Freddy Garcia on this year's squad). Pat Robertson could catch.

I wouldn't count on Hawk doing it. He was on ESPN1000 today and was asked about being involved in the World Series on the radio end. Hawk acknowledged that Farmio has called him, but Hawk declined the offer. Hawk also said that he is receiving 7 or 8 phone calls a day about getting involved in the World Series but says he is just going to stay in Florida and watch the games.

And people still want this tool to throw out the first pitch?

I vote for Thomas, Ventura and Fisk.

Without knowing any of the details, I won't speculate, but does this seem odd to anyone else? Why wouldn't Hawk want to be with the team during this historic occasion?

I heard that interview, and IMO Hawk sounded kind of bitter or pissed. Stuff like "I had to change my phone number", as if he's doing anything he can not to take those calls or was pissed at those calling him. And it wasn't said in a joking manner.

He really seemed unhappy, and came across as refusing to participate out of spite for something. It just seems really really odd after his history with the team. I wonder if he's upset at the org for not fighting harder to get him involved in the broadcasts of the LDS & LCS.

First pitch-Reinsdorf to Konerko: "What's it gonna take to keep you here?" :D:

I say Hugo Chavez for game one (kudos to the long-time Venezuelan-Sox connections including Guillen and Freddy Garcia on this year's squad). Pat Robertson could catch.

Then, for game 2, get Fidel Castro, who can try his best to lure Jose and El Duque back to Havana. George Bush I or II can catch.

There ya go buddy!
