Just saw this blurb in the latest issue of The Sporting News:

Who needs tickets? ... Anyone? ... Anyone? Tough times for ticket scalpers. There were about 7,000 empty seats for the first baseball playoff game in Chicago and 10,000 empty seats for a game in Atlanta, and it was a buyers' market for a game in St. Louis. Plus, Mike Tice's team is terrible.

I read this and viewed it as just another cheap shot by the national media... can anyone who was actually at the game verify?

That can't possibly be true. Attendance was over 40,000 all four games. Even further proof was that the men's bathroom lines were insane.

"7,000 empty seats"?!? *****. Even the Trib didn't libel us this badly. The best the Trib could come up with was "dozens" of empty seats.

That's bogus, as mentioned, all the games have had 40,000+ (over 100%), the Atlanta one is true, but they always get the free pass.

I was in the lower bowl for Game 1, and it was packed. I did see some empty seats in the UD, but at most a few hundred, and I'd be willing to bet that most of those people were on the 100 level.

7000 out of 40000? That would mean the stadium was about 4/5ths full. Absolute rubbish.

The Attendance is PAID attendance the tickets had been sold to Brokers who weren't able to sell them and therefore counted towards the total... BUT there certainly weren't 7000 empty seats, unless they were counting a new shipment of Green Seats waiting to be installed.

TSN is a joke

Everybody knows there were 39558 empty seats when the White Sox played Boston in Game 1

What a bunch of crap. Every seat was filled for ALL of the playoff games. Brokers are probably having a tough time because they are not getting their 200% profit they were hoping for.

That is absolute rubbish. If there were really 7000 empty seats, then why did so many Sox fans who tried to get tickets at noon on last Thursday walk away empty handed?

Here's a theory of how the morons at TSN may have come up with that number - I noticed in reading box scores from some sites during the season, that some sites were still using the pre-upper deck renovation numbers as the Cell's "capacity". Therefore, on days where the Sox had sellouts or near-sellouts, I saw box scores that were reporting the park as something like 85% full. It's possible that TSN is one of those organizations still using the old numbers - so their box score would show 40k out of 47k capacity instead of 40k out of 40k capacity.

That's a good point. It's probably true as well. Way to stay up to date, TSN

What's really garbage about this is that anyone who even watched on TV would know that there weren't empty seats. They would also know that the ALDS sold out very quickly and the ALCS sold out in 48 minutes.

Anyone who's paying attention would also note that there are 3000 people standing on the outfield concourse, which means they're not in their seats. What baseball stadium doesn't have dozens of empty seats? That's always the case. Have you ever seen NO ONE on the concourse or in the bathroom? NOT A CHANCE.

Actually, there were over 7000 empty seats. Three hours before the game started.
