Great shortstops only hit the free agent market every so often and this is one of those years. Any team searching for a free agent shortstop has the chance to acquire one of the best out there; Royce Clayton. He's testing the free-agent market.:o:
"Knowing that the average major league shortstop is making between $4 million and $5 million," Clayton said, "it would be a disservice to my family to entertain that offer after I put up the two types of seasons that I did."
Returning on a one-year basis could be a risk for Clayton, who knows top prospect Stephen Drew is waiting in the wings.
"Obviously, if they're not in contention (late in the season), then I'm not going to be playing," Clayton said. "I'll be a free agent again with no at-bats. I've been in that situation, and it doesn't make sense for me to put myself in that situation after having two good years."
So just how good were those years? Offensively, Royce hit:
2004: .279/.338/.397/.735 8 HR, 54 RBI - In Coors
2005: .270/.320/.351/.671 2 HR 44 RBI
Of course we all know Royce's speciality isn't that whole hitting thing. He makes his money with his outstanding defense.
