2-0!

After we took the lead, I knew it was ours, despite the bats in the Red Sox lineup. We are the king of the 1-run win. This is our kind of game. And that's why all the nail-biting and high blood pressure during the season pays off.

This is our year.

By the way, this is EXTRA special because of that piece of trash Chris Vermin. When Scotty popped out with runners on the corners and 1 out, Berman started pleasuring himself about Wells, thinking the threat was over. "Wow! And that is why he is so great. David Wells is solid like a rock. This is what he does, and this is why he is so great. Again, the defense failed him, but he just went out an made the right pitch."
I guess he didn't make the right pitch afterall, Chris.

Beuhrle NEEDS to throw his curve more often. All his other pithces are too similar to each other, the tilt/speed of the curve keeps batters off balance. He can also get it over for first pitch strikes. The Red Sox were laying into some first pitch fastballs.

LOL, so true!!! He was all over Wells for being solid and getting himself out of situations even when the D let him down. It was great for Iguchi to take him yard there  (I like to think it was because I donned the black cap to try to get a rally started  )

I am on the verge of tears right now just thinking about the big performances of Gooch and Bobby. I can't imagine what I'm going to be like when we finally put away the Blow Sox.

I want Boston to be the quietest place on the face of the Earth around 6 pm Friday night. Well, except for a little corner of Fenway Park around the visitor's clubhouse.

10-05-2005, 08:54 PM
Forget about that game yesterday. This was White Sox baseball, pure and simple. Wow, what an exciting game!!

Tadahito hit one of the most clutch home runs I've ever seen. And what a job by Buehrle settling down and keeping the game close, then Bobby getting some big outs.

I'm 31, but I think I'm going to have a heart attack before this season is over. This game was HUGE!!

My god, what a team. First, they win a complete landslide, then make an incredible one-inning comeback by taking one mistake and going for the throat...and finish with the one-run victory like they've done all year. Not a bad outing for Buehrle, he did enough to win and should've given up less than four had he had better leather behind him in the first.

Wow. Just wow.

What a great game, great hitting by the RedCubs early, but that 2nd time around the lineup for the Sox in the 5th with Crazy Carl and Aaron and Crede, but boy did Iguchi want them to remember Tony fumblestubs Graffanino and then the Sox pen took over.

About the only dissappointment was not a clean bunt to be laid down by the Sox to even once get Boomer off the mound! Make the ole guy play the field!

I'm on a business trip in Atlanta, and headed over to a sports bar for these 2 games. Lots of people cheering for the Sox, lots of Yankee fans rooting us on (this week). Nothing like watching the Sox win on a 70" HD projection screen while downing some cold ones! Too bad I'm not at the Cell tho.

Beautiful, beautiful game.

The Redcub fans are panicking. "We're 8-1 when facing elimination; (last night it was "we're 4-0 the game after a blowout loss); "we have a huge pitching edge in the next 2 with Schilling and Wakefield" (yea, right).

Nobody better tell them that the Sox are REALLY 2-2 against Boston in Fenway this year (or at least 1.5-2).

Gammons was about to blow an aorta his face is so red.

FWIW, Graff seems to hit Jenks... he hit the homer against him on labor day. But he's the only one.

Madvora

The 2-0 ALDS comeback has happened several times, and the 3-0 ALCS comeback even happened (I think we all remember when and who). It's not over.

We're set to sweep this with Garcia going against Wakefield. Doesn't mean we will, still gotta execute. I have faith that Ozzie will maintain a high level of urgency in the clubhouse. Gotta treat Friday's game like a must-win. And every game for that matter.

We're set to sweep this with Garcia going against Wakefield. Doesn't mean we will, still gotta execute. I have faith that Ozzie will maintain a high level of urgency in the clubhouse. Gotta treat Friday's game like a must-win. And every game for that matter.

You're right about the comebacks- in fact, Boston did it back in 2003 against Oakland. The difference is they could throw Pedro and Lowe, and last year they added Schilling to that. That's not the case this year. They have to hope the Sox struggle in three straight games against Wakefield/Schilling (I have a feeling Schilling is pitching on Friday) and Clement.

Ozzie will have these guys ready to play. I think they smell blood in the water and I think they learned their lesson about letting up during the regular season due to the Cleveland comeback.

It's actually a good thing that we keep hearing all this talk about how Boston has done this before. It guards against complacency. I say what they did last year actually hurts them now because the Sox won't let their guard down like the Yankees did.

Mark on the postgame show: "I don't care if we are up five runs and only need one out. It's not over."

It is, but I am glad the team isn't thinking that.

Wakefield and Shilling aren't anything near what we were. Plus they don't have their best pitcher from the last decade anymore. (at one time, Pedro was like Rivera; you could almost concede 2 games to the redcubs before the series began - but not no mo). If we pitch, we win this series. That was my position on the matter before the series began and it's still my position (it's also why I wanted to play boston - they have soft pitching).

HA. Everyone comes back from 2-0 against the A's. It was an October tradition for a while there. The Mariners also did it to the Yankees in 1995.

But yeah, this is not the same Red Sox team, if anyone's still unclear on that topic. Trot Nixon even said it. We just won two games that we were supposed to win. Now we got another game that's heavily in our favor. I don't wanna see no B.S. with that knuckleballer. Get it done! :bandance:

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet (I haven't read the entire thread), but the Red Sox hit the ball pretty hard tonight. There were a lot of loud outs, and this game easily could have been 8-5 Boston without the at-em balls.

It wasn't, of course, and Buehrle and Jenks also made pitches when they had to. It looks like your team stands a pretty good shot at advancing, but there's work left to be done.

Even after tonight, I'm anxious to be at Fenway on Friday.

Not only that, but this is such a slow, slugging team and they don't field that well either. To top it off, they don't have much of a bullpen and are without their closer. We should've been favored all the way, I don't get it. But that doesn't matter.

Everything that playoff baseball is about, we excel at and the Red Sox don't.

The guy wearing No. 13 in the Sox dugouts knows a little about comebacks from seemingly impossible odds, too. I think tonight is where the last month of the season helped. Things weren't going well early but they stayed with it and battled from Buehrle to the bats.

Bobby got it done without being able to locate his change or curve and with every fastball thrown low in the strike zone being hit hard. He's got to keep the fastball high or out of the zone OR develop some movement on it. 98 MPH with no movement gets hit by good hitters when it's not located right.

I feel for Graff. I love him as a hitter, not as a fielder, but 2nd base is his best position, IMO. Thanks, ol' buddy.

Let's play them one at a time and don't even think anything that resembles Zambrono, Pryor and Woods in the next three.

When's the last time the Sox won two playoff games in a row? at home?

The Sox haven't won two playoff games in a row at home in nearly 90 years, since 1917, when they started off with two wins at home against the NY Giants and went on to win in 6.

The Sox won two games on the road in a row in '93 in Toronto, but lost the series.

In the '06 series with the Flubs, the visiting team won the first 5 games which alternated stadiums every game, until the Sox put the streak to end by winning two in a row and the first one at home in game 6.

This team has the right attitude, you can tell by their demeanors from the postgame interviews and you can thank Ozzie for that. I'm sure they'll be going all out to get it over with as soon as possible. Hopefully we can take a few days off while NYY/LAAofA beat each other up for 5 games.

I think a lot of credit has to be given to Ozzie for this victory. He's showing that he's a better game manager than most people give him credit for.

The shift when Ortiz was batting was perfect; leaving Buehrle in there to face Ortiz in the 7th; bringing in Bobby and leaving him in there for 2 innings. Also, not calling for the walk of Manny in the 1st didn't work out, but Varitek hits Buehrle much better than Manny so it was a good call.

Amazingly, outside Chicago, we're still flying under the radar.

National/Boston media that I've read/heard/seen tonight is still saying we're "a scrappy little team" and focusing on Boston's past ability to come back, rather than our comeback tonight. Still believing in Boston even though there's no way Boston can win now without (presuambly) Bronson Arroyo beating Contreras. Treating Graffanino's error like a fluke even though Boston's two-run first was due to Crede letting a similar ball go under his glove. Still giving Robinson Cano twice as much attention as Iguchi, ignoring Uribe, disrespecting our bullpen, etc.

And we don't care!

During the press conference Guillen repeated (again) how Iguchi is his MVP. However I doubt anyone heard him because they were too busy thinking up new questions about the significance of Graff's gaffe.

How many times did they replay that error on TV? Somebody with a VCR or Tivo ought to count them. It seemed like they showed it 20 times.

Wow. Just wow.

So, just got back. Yesterday was the partay :bandance:, today felt like semester exams in comparison :(:.

Things looked v. grim for a while there :(:. From Crede's non-error to start the game to Mark B. getting torched with 2 strikes on guys to the way Wells was economically boring through our lineup -- 28 pitches after 3 innings. :o:

I went to get something to eat in the top of the 5th, when Buehrle got a quick 1-2-3 inning. As I was trying to down my gigantic hamburger (apparently sold on the Club level but not elsewhere in the park...this thing was so huge I could barely get my mouth around it) in the bottom of the 5th, Crazy Carl singled and then Aaron dropped in the RBI double just down the line. I scrambled back to my section and just stood there by the railing, trying to munch down on the Giant Hamburger, when Tony Buckner made the Error of the Year for the Beantowners. Two batters later, Tadahito Iguchi delivered a belated "**** you" from Frank Thomas and the White Sox, and all was good. We got to Shrek, after all.

Baby_Fisk and I partied with a celebatory beer for the next inning or so and I got back to my seats to watch the very gutsy move by Ozzie to use Jenks, period, and not just for two whole innings. Congrats, kid -- you're in the bigs now.

We held serve and did NOT lose home field advantage, which would have been the case otherwise. I hope Sweaty Freddy can do his usual away-park home-game magic on Friday so that we can rest up our guys for the Yanks/Angels winner. Most importantly, we won a game we really should have lost.

I'm now 2-2 in Sox postseason history. Here's to seeing an ALCS game or two in person, and hopefully beyond.

Yep and that's what makes them idiots, too.

Baseball isn't like other sports. You can't just run out the clock. You have to throw strikes or hope the hitters are dumb enough to get themselves out. Balls pitched in the strike zone are hittable, and often times travel a long, long way.

This series is NOT over. The Sox still need to pitch a lot of strikes to this Boston line up, and it is positively nervewracking to watch it unfold.

I'm all in favor of choking the last breath out of Boston as quickly as possible. Let those idiots supporting the Lovable Losers keep scratching their heads over what makes Priors and Woods worth nothing but a bag of farts in the post-season.

Yes!

In all fairness, Gammons has been favoring the Sox during the series and leading up to it. The full-hour BBTN that was on leading into the Astros/Braves game, Gammons picked the Sox to take game 2 and went on for some time about the "depth of the Sox staff neutralizing Papi and ManRam"...

Maybe after being elected to the hall of fame, he realized that he needed to start to make some sense.

So yesterday I'm at work and trying to follow the game on TV. The Sox jump out to a 2-run lead when I am doing other stuff, but I manage to make it back to the bar and see there are still 2 outs in the first and there are a couple of men on and AJ is batting. He fouls one off and then he drives one the other way into the seats. I was pretty happy then...

Cue film forward...

Tonight I am working and I am too damned busy to do much more than glance at the TV from time to time. It's not looking good. The score is 2-0 and then 4-0 and the innings are starting to roll by. I've got my Sox hat on a shelf in the bar, facing a TV (he likes to watch the games). So I stoll over and give him a good luck touch and continue working. About 15 minutes later, I'm back in the bar and there isn't much going on at that moment at work - rush is winding down. I notice the Sox have scored a couple of runs and there are 2 men on and Pods is batting. Pods pops out and I think, "Well at least he didn't hit into a double play. We're still alive." I wander over and pat the hat one more time for good luck and Gooch strolls to the plate. The first curve looked a shade inside, but the K-zone showed it just nipping the inside corner. Heck of a pitch, Gooch watched it. The second curve on 3-2 didn't nip anything. It was center cut and fat as the guy who threw it. This time Gooch swung. The ball takes off. The left fielder takes a few futile steps toward the line and then slows down to watch the ball sail into the hands of the Sox faithful who are erupting on TV in wild delight. Just as I am in the bar. Nearly knocked down a $300 light shade that hangs in the bar, raising my hands in celebration. Quickly withdrew my hands, glanced up, took a step over and threw the fists in the air again in the eternal, "WE ROCK! **** YES! TAKE THAT FATBOY!" gesture of extreme happiness - and nearly knock down a different $300 light shade of the same design, 2 feet from the first one. After that, I stepped away entirely from the valuable and fragile light shades and continued to stand there with my hands in the air. Some of the patrons thought I was hilarious. Of course I gave my hat a "thank you" pat and put him back on the shelf. I got to watch most of the last 3 innings as my bartender took a break and I hung out in the bar doing paperwork. I finall gave up in the ninth, grabbed a good empty table and with my hat nearby watched the end of the game.

One could say I'm pretty ****ing happy right now...

Could that have been more amazing? My voice is completely shot!

You're going to love this. I was in section 544 with my dad and brothers and in the top of the 5th I looked down behind homeplate and who should I see but M&M Guy! I knew that was it -- there was no way we were going to lose with M&M Guy in the house! I pointed him out to my brother and told him we were going to take it...and you know what happened in the bottom of the 5th!

Thank you Iguchi!!! Thank you M&M Guy!!! Thank you White Sox!!!

Let's go for the sweep in Beantown!

I could see M&M guy below our section, and if anything, his seats have improved in the playoffs. He's not even in the Scout Seats anymore; he's sitting in the first row of the newly-constructed seats right next to Boston's dugout. He was standing and waving some sign for quite a bit in the later innings. I was cracking up.

Just got back from Game 2 (I was at Game 1 as well). The two most exciting sporting events I have ever attended. Both were scripted perfectly. Game 1 took away all of our pre-game jitters early so that we could finally enjoy a White Sox playoff game. Tonight's game was vintage 2005 Sox. Gutsy call by Ozzie to pitch Jenks for two innings, but it worked. I also admire MB for battling back from a rough to start to pitch 7 innings. And Gooch - I was praying for that hit and he delivered.

I fly back tomorrow morning and the sight and sound of those crowds will be etched in my brain for a long time. Great job Sox fans! We created a real playoff atmosphere and home field advantage.

Just got back as well. Unbelievable game, unbelievable electricity. What a night!

One note: NEVER, EVER, EVER go up to 33rd Street to get on the Redline as a "shortcut". Even though there are tons of people trying to get on at 35th, there are also 20 turnstyles. The 33rd St entrance has a whopping *two* turnstyles. The CTA people directed us to go up there "to avoid a wait", but I think it ended up taking twice as long.

Back from the game. (And boy I wish I'd had the opportunity to order post-season tickets for the rest of the series.)

If yesterday's win was one of the great days of my life just for the pre-game and the sweetness of kicking the Red Sox' heinies, this win was even sweeter. Buerhle had me worried with his rough first and third innings, and Wells was mowing our hitters down. But then the five-run inning capped by Gooch's 3-run shot. Coming from behind and gaining yet another one-run win was even sweeter.

And to top it off it was off big mouth and fat*** David Wells. Now there's lagniappe.

Totally OT question: how in the heck do you get on the Ryan northbound from 22nd Street? I decided to drive north a bit because the entrances at 35th and 31st were backed up, headed west on 22nd, saw the signs for "90/94" in Chinatown, got on there and suddenly realized the signs should have said "90/94 East" only. Meaning, I ended up heading right back toward the Cell.

90/94 northbound was jammed up bigtime, so I ended up taking 43rd to some northbound street to 38th to LSD to 55 to 90/94 north (west) bound. Very frustrating.

Absolutely amazing game. The place was dead for the inning or two before the 5-run outburst, but on the whole a great crowd. Once Rowand hit the double, everyone in the park knew that something good was about to happen. Iguchi's HR sent the place into euphoria. Best game I've ever been to in my life.

Got home about an hour ago. This was the very first playoff game of my life that I was fortunate enough to attend and it was, without a doubt, the single GREATEST BASEBALL EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE! I went to the All-Star Game two years ago and thought that was special... tonight's game was FAR AND AWAY above that!

I have never, ever heard Comiskey Park as loud as I heard it tonight! Maybe it had something to do with 50,000 thundersticks being hit together, but I prefer to attribute it to the AWESOME Sox fans who were there. When Iguchi blasted that homerun, I started to shake and screamed so loud that everything became a blur; I couldn't even make the marks in my scorebook!

I thought I was in for a long night when two Red Sox fans sat to my right next to my sister, and two more showed up just before the first pitch and sat to my left, but lucky for me the 5th inning came along! When Podsednik popped out in the 5th, I turned to the guy behind me, remembering what I'd heard Rooney & Farmer say so much this season- Iguchi usually picks up his teammates if they can't come through initially- and told him Iguchi would pick Pods up. Lo and behold, my friends.

I went to the Bullpen Bar after the game and from Section 514 to the Bar, I probably high-fived a hundred people- ninety-nine of which I didn't know. The walk down the ramps was one I'll NEVER forget and was absolutely thunderous. The chants of "Let's Go White Sox" and "Sweep!" echoed throughout and were enough to give me goosebumps on a very warm night.

At the risk of making a prediction, with Freddy going on Friday- during the day, on the road- and facing Wakefield, whom the Sox OWN, I can't help but have a good feeling!

But for right now, I'm going to relish this AWESOME victory and the greatest baseball experience of my life. It's dress down day at work tomorrow, so I'm wearing my Division Championship shirt and plan on sticking it to the Cub fan who gave me grief Tuesday AND this morning! :supernana:

Shout-out to Hangar who dropped by Section 158 pre-game; good to see you at a winning Sox effort.

When Iguchi's homer came off the bat it was coming right at us in 158. As I saw the flight of the ball crest I was thinking, "this has a chance". Then the ball dropped in and the crowd exploded! High fives all around, screaming, cheering, just ****ing electricity!

It's a great feeling to be on the brink of an ALCS. Let's get this done Friday and celebrate. Go Sox!

Story:
Today around noon my friend told me his dad couldn't make it to the game--so I score a free ticket in Terry Francona's personal seats, Row 27, section 131 (his dad knows Francona from college). We sat directly behind Mrs. Schilling, Mrs. Nixon, and Mrs. Varitek, the Red Sox travel director sat two seats from me (got to see a world series ring) and to top it all off we handed them their collective ass on a platter. As if that weren't enough, I got in the background of the Fox report outside the ballpark. I can be seen on Fox news replayed at 2 am. I'm the one with thunderstix and a Sox cap near the bottom.
Oh, and I have pictures for posting as soon as I have time to get them on a disk.

Well, it's now obvious that Ozzie instructed the team to play possum in August and September, thereby lulling the other AL teams and the east coast mediots into a false sense of security. They waited for the lead to get down to exactly 1.5 games, and then turned it back on at precisely the right time.

Imagine Ozzie, doing his best impression of William Wallace in Braveheart:

Man, great game. I did get worried about Burlheles (spelling, sorry its late) pitching early, but he did strike out ortiz and contain manny the whole game. And just sucked it up and got hot for his final few innings of play and held the line. Bullpen again, was solid, with Jenks working through some tough situations. I mean, we were predicted to lose this game and all any media source could say was "Well, Boston isnt worried, they have done this before etc" I know its that talk gonna happen but Im a homer, so sue me. Oh, and my buddy was at this game....he drove back to school in Chucktown IL tonight, he said the place sounded like it was going to break apart at any minute with how nuts the crowd was. Also (sorry its long) the crowd never seemed to be completely out of it, maybe im wrong but they seemed pretty loud the entire game.

I go to San Jose State University in San Jose, Californa. I was a lttle stressed out today walking from class and kinda looking down towards the ground thinking about all of my upcoming exams and papers due in the next week. I turn the corner and lift my head only to see this guy decked out in red sox gear. He sees my white sox hat and scowls like that girl in the exorcist when the priest walks in. I look at him and smile (grin) and imediatley declare "you guys are going down tonight..." His jaw drops. He doesn't take his eyes off of me as I walk by and stare him down. When I am ten feet past him he starts yelling "yesterday was luck- you guys won't win another game!" I just grin back thinking "what a hopeless bastard." I get home from school to see the game come on TV before my very eyes and quickly log on to WSI chat. The rest is history. I haven't yelled like that since the bottom half of my leg came out sideways 90 degrees in wrestling and I tore my ACL in half. What a home run. Thanks Gooch. Imediatley after the home run I had to go to work. Everyone at the restaurant I work at with knows I love the WHite Sox. Hell, I have $10 dollar bets with half of them that The White Sox go to the ALCS. I would walk by the TV every chance I got pumping my fists in front of the whole bar-area. Last year, when facing elimination against the Yankees and with Wakefield on the bump, the Sawx kept Varitek in the lineup over the weak-hitting but adept-at-catching-knucklers Doug Mirabelli. The result was humorous, with Varitek basically just guessing where the pitches were going and missing more than a few, but effective since the Sawx (in case you hadn't heard) won that game.

My point? Don't be surprised to see Varitek's bat in the lineup Friday - Boston is that desperate.

When Mirabelli was injured earlier this year and Varitek was catching Wakefield, it was awful. Not just because of the passed balls, but because Wakefield pitched pretty horribly.

I'm not positive what the right move would be here.

Probably, skip Wakefield.

This looks good. If Varitek is in, the Sox should be able to move runners into scoring position all day. If Mirabelli is in, that weakens the lineup.

The great part about Iguchi's hit was that we were just trying to get that guy in from third to cut the lead to one run. The three run homer was just a huge surprise, and the place went nuts.
:bandance:

I was kind of shocked that he hit it out to be honest. I know he has that kind of power and I even predicted 20+ HRs for him this year, but his position in the lineup kind of hindered his production this year. In this situation, he had no extra job to do; he was free to hit with the intention of bringing as many runs home as possible and he came through in the biggest way possible.

As Ozzie said, it was a tough play. Normally he charges a ball hit that slowly, but in this case he would give up the DP if he did. So he waits back but it is a little too slow so he rushes the shovel to 2nd and blows it. Timing that is probably a little like trying to hit an ephus pitch 400 feet -- harder than timing a harder hit ball. Anyway (without implying anything about the level of the play) I always had a harder time in little league with slow ones than hard hit ones. Something about not letting the ball play you, but in this case Graf was forced to let the ball play him.

Anyway, if they want to run him out of Boston, we'll take him back!
