Having only been watching baseball since 1997, this is the first time I've ever experienced a playoff win. Unofrtunately, I was at work and watched Gamecast, but all the same, this feels great! Can't wait to get home and watch the replay on MLB.TV. The best part about this: My boss is a Red Sox fan.

I know that good pitching beats good hitting. But remind me again, what does great pitching plus great hitting beat?

Oh yeah, the Blow Sox!

ESPN might as well just schedule a couple of nights of poker and shift the ALDS to the Outdoor Life Network, since they're going to hate broadcasting this series.

This is from the Game Day Thread...

I don't want to sound negative, since this has been awesome, as I expected, but why use our best bullpen guys in a blowout?

If ever a time for Viz...

I like that Oz went with Cotts and Politte. Why send Viz out there and give the blo sux a chance to add a couple of runs late in the game?

This sends a message, if we get past the 7th inning with the lead you can shut it down because our bullpen is this good. It also sends the Sux home with that bowling ball in their stomach feeling.

Not much to say on this one from a Red Sox perspective except that the Pale Hose showed why they won a lot of games this year. Contreras pitched well against us, which is something he's seldom done.

Now that's the way to send a message to open a series. Woohoo!! :bandance: :gulp: :bandance: :gulp:

- Great outing by Contreras! He just continued his second-half dominance out there.
- Pierzynski's homer set the tone. If the Red Sox get out of that down only 2-0, I don't think the game ends as a blowout.
- Chris Berman is awful. Did anyone else think he sounded like he was openly rooting for the Blow Sox? We were up 6-0 and Boston got a leadoff double. The fatass says something like, "Here come the Red Sox." Hey, you sack of crap, we're up 6 ****ing runs! Moron. I do think Sutcliffe and Piazza did a good job balancing out Berman.
- Ozzie's reaction on Iguchi's throw to 3rd was classic. I think we all probably had the same "No, no, no! Yes, yes, yes!" reaction.

1-0. Let's win tomorrow and go to Boston up 2-0. I'd rather not go into Boston tied.

Uhhh, so valid points are now trollish? The guy is absolutely right. It's simply not a smart play when we're up 12 in the 9th inning. Tie game and in the 9th, fine, but don't risk injuring yourself in that situation. I know that was instinct taking over, but I would have hoped Rowand would pull back. If, god forbid, it came out that Rowand separated his shoulder because of that, how would you feel then? Still a great play to run into the wall with a 12-run lead in the 9th inning?

GO SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I swear to God I predicted Pods homer to my buddy. This game will go down in Sox history.

I just got back from the game(without a voice) and I swear it was one of the best games I will ever see in my life. The energy was INSANE!!! And when Scottie hit that homer I almost died.....I almost took my brothers arm off...what a way to start the series....GO GO WHITE SOX!!!!!!!!!

Damn good game! Way to go boys....ESPN and every other media that predicted us lose can join the Cubs on vacation. We dont need them!!!!!

Being all the way in Carbondale, it's unheard of to be a Sox fan so all eight of us Sox fans were in the White Sox gulag, which is just about the only bar that shows the game on a regular basis. When Pods hit the homer, we all went nuts. Glad Boston got the consolation prize in the playoffs because i can't imagine what the "better" teams in the AL would have done to them today.

AWESOME!!! :bandance: :bandance: :bandance:

I swear, when Pods hit his only Sox homer (so far) I left my body. I was so juiced, it took 5 minutes after the inning was over to stop shaking. The only thing better, other than 10 more of the same, would be a Series victory. It was like the A.J. Dodgers walkoff times 5.

I didnt get to see most of the game... How was the Sox fans/Red Cub fans ratio?

There was about 1 Red Cub fan per 1000 Sox fans, like it should be!

You could tell that the team really fed off the crowd. So keep it up Game 2 ticketholders - if you can still talk after the game, you didn't cheer hard enough.

What a game!!! The only time I had seen a Sox playoff game was the last game of the 1959 world series, when, as a little tyke, I witnessed, as I recall, an unfavorable outcome. Maybe it's a fabricated memory.

I missed all subsequent playoff games because I was out of the country in '83, '93 and 2000.

This made the wait rather more than worthwhile! Extraordinary, superlative, and pretty good, too!!

One of the many admirable qualities of this team is that they have no illusions that they are going to walk over the Red Sox; nonetheless, they are confident in the final outcome. An exceptional group.

Go Sox!

Best game I ever saw. I dare someone to find something to complain about.

This is not a complaint but an uneasy feeling. In 1959, the Sox won their WS opener against the Dodgers 11-0. It was Kluszewski with two homers; today it was 14-2 and Pierzynski with two homers. In 1959, the Sox lost the second game at home by 1 run, 4-3. You feel like you want to borrow two of those 11 runs and win the game 5-4. So I would not be surprised if the White Sox have a little trouble scoring runs after a blowout/laugher the previous day. Sometimes it's uncanny how that happens. Obviously, the Sox have to guard against overconfidence and keep their Ozzieball as their primary strategy in spite of the home runs today. It may be a close game. Also, with Boston, a 3-0 lead, or in this series, a 2-0 lead is not safe with them, as we saw last year with the Yankees. Enjoy today, but remember the lesson from 1959. Hopefully, the Sox will prevail!! To my chagrin, I was one of the ones who worried about the Oakland A's. Go figure!

Amazing, incredible, stupendous, unbelievable, scintillating, pick your adjective...it is the best day to be a Sox fan that we've ever had (unless someone is out there who was alive in '06 or '17 that is).

Being the rah-rah guy that I am, I love games like this, but I tell you I've never heard or seen the things I heard and saw at the Cell today. People hugging, the ramp chants of 'let's go White Sox', people high fiving, people standing constantly - from the first pitch onward - everyone was in to this game. I can't decide which is better, what the team on the field did, or how we responded to the on-field action. Four curtain calls? You got to be kidding me. The Na Na for Clement was the loudest I've ever heard, and I've heard thousands since 1977. With Clement on the hill, it was just so so apropos.

I think we all see why Gammons picked us though - that pitching just doesn't seem like it is up to the task. Our task is now to keep the line moving against the Boomah who screwed us in '01. C'mon Markus, give us seven strong tomorrow kid!

I have almost no voice after that offensive explosion today. Needless to say, I am the proudest ever of this 2005 White Sox team than I've ever been. They absolutely took it to Boston and exposed the weaknesses in their pitching staff that many experts predicted would be exposed in the postseason, but probably not to this extent. Nearly every Sox batter had his say in the matter, and Jose C. was the constant rock leading us through the innings. Boston never had a chance today, except for that one threat in the 4th inning snuffed out because Boston's baserunning sucks.

When Pods hit his 3-run blast, US Cellular went up for grabs. We all knew the game was over then and there, and the party absolutely began.

My only problem was not being able to squeeze into Jimbo's after the game; instead, we drove up to the near south side to quaff a couple of brews at Grace O'Malley's on S. Michigan. Jimbo's is just too much of a zoo right now, which is a bummer, but we'll have to branch out to find suitable places to celebrate.

Tomorrow's another game, so I hope the Sox keep this in perspective and re-energize themselves overnight. Tomorrow is HUGE, after a win like today's.

I guess I can attribute today's win to my pug wearing her new good luck charm Sox bandana, which I didn't know she had until just about half an hour ago:

No let down boys - kick'em hard in the teeth right off the bat tomorrow.

What an incredible day! First getting up at 3:30 to be with the WCSF to cheer for the Sox on a couple of channels. Then after a couple of hours rest to come back to the park and see Big Frank throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Tears welled up in my eyes thinking about his career and how much he has to be wishing he could be in the thick of it.

Then the bats exploding...and Pods hitting his first home run of the year. And that throw by Iguchi to Crede: "What's he doing? YES!" The fans up for every pitch, the curtain calls. The diving catch by Dye. The near miss by Aaron. The last play of the game: "He's got it....NO HE DOESN"T...YES!"

God, I love baseball at this level!

All this time, I thought the come-from-behind win against the Dodgers in June would be the best Sox game I'd watched all season... until this afternoon!!! That was an absolutely AMAZING, AWESOME, and UNBELIEVABLE game today! There were so many guys that came through for us that I can't even begin to list them all. The crowd sounded like it was rockin' and I was definitely feeling the good vibes through my t.v. and radio in Des Plaines. I absolutely love this team and am the proudest I've ever been as a Sox fan. :D:

I simply can't wait to be a part of it all tomorrow night! After many uncertainties of whether or not I was even going to make it to any playoff games, thanks to a broken promise by someone I know, I had a person I don't even know come through for me with tickets for Game 2! A friend of the family called someone she does business with and practically begged for tickets for me because she knew how heartbroken I was that I didn't get to today's game. The woman she called not only came through with the tickets, but put them on the business expense account, which translates to FREE playoff tickets for me!!!! :bandance:

But...but...but...play for one run and that's all you get, right? Right? Isn't that what all the statheads say?

I have no problem with Ozzie bunting in the 1st inning. IMO you always play to take the lead early. If you have confidence in your pitcher to pitch well, then getting that sure one run early can be very big. And look, what do you know, despite the bunt we still had a big inning!

I agree 100%. With your hottest pitcher on the hill, who hasn't been giving up runs, you get that first run. The propellerheads tell you that you give up a chance to do more - but I'll take 1 run every inning I can get it. And who knows...sometimes you get a little bit more!

That game was awesome. Thankfully, Aaron is OK after running into the wall (ouch).

Tomorrow is another day and we need Buehrle to pitch good game. If he can locate his pitches and keep the ball down, we should be fine.

2-0 going into Boston would be huge. I keep hearing people talk about how the Red Cubs came back from an 0-3 deficit last year, but they were also a much stronger team back then.

Exactly. Push a run across in the first. When we were rolling in April and May, it seemed almost every game Scotty would lead off and get on base, he would steal second, Iguchi would hit him over, and the next guy would drive him in.
Playing for one run gets a bad rep, but look at it this way. If you play for one run, and are able to bunt and sacrifice one run in every inning (which admittedly you would never be able to do), you score 9 runs. Obviously, you don't play for one run when you are down by 5 in the fifth inning, but you play for one run in close, tight games. We have great pitching. The only way these games wont be very close is if our offense busts it wide open like today.

The deck is most certainly stacked for Mark tomorrow with a 1-0 series lead, and there is nobody I would rather have out there.

Great win by (our) Sox and a complete domination by Jose. Even tho our defense wasnt as sharp as it could have been it was a good time for the few slip-ups to show up during the course of this game and not in a tight contest.

Now if Mark Buehrle even pitches anywhere near what he is capable of we should win Wednesdays game with no problem. I say this because as we are seeing Boston has no pitching what so ever.

David (Super-Size that meal) Wells? Puhlezze. He will be hit hard just like we did to Clements. If Pods gets on early...he will disrupt the Boston pitchers to no end.

Heres to another White Sox winner. :bandance:

Here's what I really like about today's win. Coming into this series I said I didn't think either team would sweep. I said I thought the Red Sox offense would single-handedly win them one game and the White Sox pitching would single-handedly win us one game. The other games, who knows. Now obviously it isn't set in stone that each team has to win a game like that. But today's game was won by our hitting, not our pitching. I still think we will have one game where a pitcher single-handedly wins the game for us (ie we only score 2 runs but allow just 1 run). That would leave us needing just 1 win out of the other 2 games.

My only complaint: Ozzie, please don't bunt the top of the order in the early innings against a soft pitching team like the redcubs. Thank you.

My only complaint was using both Cotts and Politte (though they had very few pitches) in a blow out, isn't this why Viz is on the roster? Don't want to give them extra looks before a close situation when you really need these guys. Also, a little questionable to me to have Jose increase the pitch count/give them more looks when he didn't need to in the 8th, but I guess Ozzie wanted to get him the fan ovation while walking off

But yeah, wasn't huge, it was obviously an awesome game. The Pods homer was icing on the cake, if it wasn't evident yet, it was obvious that this game was 'ovah!' Tomorrow night should be great, it's going to kill to wait til 6 though

Wow, what a way to start our post season run !!! Who thought we had it in us, 14-2 , DAMN THAT'S SWEET !!! To open with a game like that is friggin' huge. For one everyone's sphincter has got to be a little looser, did the the boys look like they were having more fun today than any day all year. It gives us all the confidence in the world to just dominate like that. We draw first blood, and all the momentum is on our shoulders. Did anyone else think that the World Champion Red Sox looked a little shellshocked after this game. A cub fan at work said " Oh you did it now 14-2, your gonna piss the Red Sox off so bad you won't win another one ". I said, "I thought they looked like a bunch of whipped dogs wanting to crawl home with their tails between their legs". Were gonna find out tomarrow. Go Sox , Go MB, and go for the jugular!!!:)

I fell into some tickets for tomorrow  (buddy's Dad got some), let's make it 2-0.

Piazza was great. I'm actually not surprised, since he's a catcher and he knows the inside game really well. Reminds me of when Leiter was in the booth (though from a pitcher's view).

I totally missed the game today because of a hectic day at work. I was walking downtown in the middle afternoon and saw a television in a pull-tab parlor had a 12-2 score in the top of the 8th. I should have been in secton 103. My in-person playoff memories don't include as much scoring.

I always imagined the 11-0 game in the '59 Series was the Sox getting rid of 40 years of frustration -- with little else to show for it through the rest of the Series.

Downey in tomorrow's Tribune (I assume) has a great story about AJ settling down his teammates. I haven't seen any posts about it yet. It seems AJ did more that hit two homers to lead his team to a win today. I hope he keeps it up.

Something I dont think was mentioned earlier...
Was it REALLY necessary for ESPN to put three cameras behind homeplate? There was one to the right of the tunnel, and two to the left. They weren't able to sell 3 or 4 seats because they were obstructed by those cameras. The whole game, I don't think they showed more than 2 shots from behind homeplate. Nothing looks worse than seeing those empty seats right behing the plate.

Go figure!

<biggest sigh in the history of sighs>

I knew this would be brought up.

And if the Germans gassed the fleeing Brits at Dunkirk it would have all been different.

Playoff games 46 years ago have no bearing on this team.

One of the best games I ever attended. Unbelievable offensive explosion. The ballpark was buzzing from pitch 1. Also, I never tire of the Go Go White Sox fight song. It means good things are happening for our Sox! When AJ hit that homer in the first, I thought the upper deck was going to collapse it was so loud!

same here... there was electricity in the air... could feel it the moment I stepped out of the car in the lot. Had a blast! Our seats turned out to be decent as well

It was my first playoff game and if they are all like this then i'm a dead man.
I knew it would be exciting but i wasn't ready for it to be the best ever.
The only thing that even comes close was a Bears game in 85.
And we get to do it again tonight?
Like that one sign said .. "is this heaven? .. maybe.

HOLY FREAKING SCHNIKES!!! I was listening to the game at work and I was beside myself!!! I just got up before AJ hit his first homer and I hear Roons going nuts so I ran back to my desk...I almost twisted my ankle! Stupid heels! What a great game! I will always remember it as long as I live! Jose was phenominal, Aaron you're a monster, AJ you're a monster and OMG PODS!!!! I was in the car on the way home when Pods hit his homer. I was screaming so loud I thought the windows were gonna break!! What a game! Mark, you know what you have to do today....go get 'em guys!!! And I agree this is P.2 of the Boston Masacre! NA NA NA NA HEY HEY GOODBYE!!! :bandance: :) :supernana:

Best game I ever saw. I dare someone to find something to complain about.

I clapped so much that I got a cut on my hand. It hurts.

Did anyone else see Crazy Carl give Pods a hug after his homer? I couldn't resist quoting DJ "there's alot of man love going on in that dugout!"

Great, great way to start thje play-offs and this series.

One of the biggest plays was Iguchi, going against the book, and throwing to 3rd, nice pick-up by Crede on the bad throw.

The replay showing OZ with hands on his head was priceless, then I remembered that I was shouting NOOOOOOOOOO as Iguchi was throwing to 3rd.

TO: All who were there.

You were at a playoff game that was at home and resulted in a W!!!

I have thought about that day forever and how cool it would be to actually be there!!

Congrats!

I have game 5 tix, which hopefully won't be necessary.

Also, I wanted to let everyone know how intelligent all of the fans sounded throughout the game.

For example when Pods got on first right away and Clement held the ball forever and Iguchi called time the crowd went nuts for the simple fact that they knew Pods was already getting to him and it was going to be a long day for Mr. Clement.

GO SOX!!

All who are going TONIGHT !! ROCK THAT PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!
