The beauty of this weekend is the Sox didn't even have to win. Mark Buehrle said these games mean "nothing." I didn't believe that, but with the bench players who have seen action the last 22 innings and the Indians losing 5 of 6 to teams that "didn't need to win," it is suddenly the Indians who should be reminding people of 1967.

Yeah, but I don't expect Ozzie to go all out to top the Cards. I'd bet on JD and Uribe getting starts as they're the only regulars not to play yet this weekend. Beyond those two guys though, I think it's the Blum, Widger, Anderson show again.

If my stats are right, the 98 wins are the third best in Sox history behind the 1917 team with 100 and the 1983 team with 99. You have to go back to 1964 when they also had 98 for the same type of season. Great accomplishment for a team that looked so down just last week. Hope they can take this into the post season. They have won seven out of their last nine.

Clement has been terrible down the stretch. So has Arroyo. And Wakefield was destroyed today. Schilling has been better, but he's still not the old Schilling. The only Red Sox pitcher I fear is David Wells. Boston is the team I've wanted in the first round all along. Now we should get them.

I'm pretty sure we wouldn't get an extra day of anyway, the ALDS starts tuesday. The one game playoff is monday. The only way we would get an extra day is if there was a 3-way tie. But a one game playoff would be good in the sense that it would wear out cleveland and boston.

Agree. Their big hitters are scary, but then again, so are our pitchers. And we have outfielders who can actually run deep fly balls down. Five game series always make me a little nervous, but if I had to choose an opponent for one, it'd be Boston.

Clement/Wells/Wakefield/Schilling???

I'll take it.

ERA vs White Sox in 2005:

Clement: 6.00
Wells: 4.05 (1 start which had 2 UER as well)
Schilling: 6.94 (5 appearances and we looked great against him every time)
Wakefield: 6.57

And that is truly an accomplishment as our offense has been fairly bad against just about everyone else. The way our pitching has been going, I really like our chances.

After resting seven of his regulars Friday, Guillen joked after Chicago's win that he ``might call Phoenix and see if they can bring in some instructional league guys.''
But Guillen went back to a heavyweight lineup against Westbrook, sitting only outfielder Jermaine Dye (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5610/), who has sore legs.
Ya, Yahoo, heavyweight lineup. Ozuna, Blum, Gload, and Timo in for Uribe, Crede, Dye, and Pods.

I forgot about Fatass Wells. Yeah, he'd probably go in game 2, though I still think Schilling could go in game 3 if he pitches well tomorrow. While the numbers don't necessarily show it, Schilling has improved in recent starts. And with the way Schilling has dominated in the postseason in his career, I think Francona might try to get him out there as soon as possible.

:D:

The only good thing about Cleveland winning the WC is that we wouldn't have to play them in a five-game series. (Damn, I wish they'd do away with those!) I have no doubt we'd beat them easily in a best-of-seven, but they could get lucky in a three-of-five. Also, if they're the WC, we're playing LAA in a five-game series, and I'd just as soon skip that, for the sake of my liver. Don't get me wrong; I think we can--and will--beat whoever gets in our way, but I'd like to get that five game series out of the way as painlessly as possible. To my mind, that means Boston. (Sorry, Fenway!)

The Indians suddenly resemble the Cubs of 2004, tearing through the opposition in early September, only to see their postseason dreams destroyed by five crushing setbacks in the season's final week.

Oh snap! Being compared to the Cubs, now that has to hurt.

Nice to watch the Sox taking their victory lap around the Jake.

From the MLB recap: (http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/gameday_recap.jsp?ymd=20051001&content_id=1232558&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=cws)

Oh snap! Being compared to the Cubs, now that has to hurt.

Somehow in just about every baseball story a reference to the Flubs, Red Flubs or Spankmees has to be made.

"I'm sure the die-hards are going crazy, but if the fans are the same as when I was there, the majority probably don't care," said Howry. "I noticed early in the season they weren't packing them in. When you look at where their stats are in hitting, it's not that good."

Final ERAs for the front four:

Buehrle: 3.12
Garland: 3.50
Contreras: 3.61
Garcia: 3.87

The second best rotation in Chicago this year! I heard it in the Tribune.

ah, but the Cubs did qualify for the simulated playoffs

Glad to see that Cleveland has shut up and our good friend OutcastRadio has ran and gone back into hiding.

The "red-hot, best team in baseball" Cleveland Indians have 19 wins in September......

The "choking, falling apart, lucky, paper tiger" Chicago White Sox have 18 wins in September. And a division title.....

(For good measure, the Spankees have 20 wins and the BloSox 17.)

Monthly Wins from April - September: 17-18-18-15-12-18 (or 19). Looks pretty consistent to me with a single bad month. Much like one would expect in a 162-game season.

Hey ESPN, Cubune, and National Mediots everywhere -

(VC edit: Image removed for violating the language filters - yes a picture can do that. Next time you get a week off and I don't care how close the playoffs are.)

OutcastRadio indeed is a huge Tribe fan but he was wasn't a troll. He was able to discuss baseball rationally and gave the White Sox credit when credit was do - while unfortunately some of our own "fans" couldn't.

Not sad about Cleveland losing but there is one fan I feel for and that is OutcastRadio.

Oh snap! Being compared to the Cubs, now that has to hurt.

On the way out of the Jake some Toon fan started running his mouth about the Sox "not deserving" to win the division - so I responded by pointing out to him the Indians were now "the Cubs of the American League". He had no idea what I meant unfortunately.
