Wow, now that is embarrasing, not what the Sox went through in this last month, but what the Cleveland Indians just went through, basically being beat by the Charlotte Knights!

Lone Division Leader (Though we would've been the champs no matter what ) - check
Homefield advantage throughout the whole damn thing - check
Ability to rest bullpen regulars til Tuesday - check

Now admit it, who had Gload as their PTC?

I'm not sure I understand the point of playing the infield back and conceding a run in the 9th. Seems like extras was the last thing we wanted; pull the infield in and win it or lose it in the 9th and win or lose right there. One thing - the media should shut up about playing the AAA players for that move.

It sure is nice to have AAA players beat the tribe.

5. Joey Cora sucks.

Indians now have to hope for either NYY or BOS to take the next 2 games, and the Indians beating the Sox Sat. and Sun.

From a personal standpoint, I'm torn between the Sox having helped both the Yanks and Red Sox's chances tonight, but I also realize that the chances of the first 2 ALDS games being night games are greatly improved if either Boston or NY is the Wild Card, and I don't want to take off more vacation days than I have to.

The best part about tonight is that Cleveland has to know that they lost to just about the weakest lineup we could field tonight. *Ouch*.

Although I was at first a little upset with the lineup today, as I thought about it some more it kind of started to make sense. The White Sox regulars have nothing to prove in the final three games. They're going to be playing in October regardless. But the White Sox AAA players and to some extent, bench players, do still have something to prove. They want to prove that they can contribute at the big league level/during the playoffs. If it weren't for wanting the regulars to stay hot as we go into the postseason, I'd say keep that lineup out there tomorrow. As it is though, I really think you want the regulars to have a couple games before the playoffs start.

Man oh man, there's got to be some fuming and grinding of teeth in Cleveland!!! They probably thought they had this game in the bag when they saw our line-up. Can you imagine what we would be like if the situation were reversed and our team, in desperate need for victories with three games left, lost to a team resting 7 of their starting position players? Throw in that Cleveland fans are already feeling snake-bitten because the Tribe never, ever seems to score for Millwood!!!

Two things tonight:

1. I wanted to see how Buerhle would do against a good-hitting team that absolutely had to win. The Indians were playing this game with playoff intensity, and they still couldn't do anything against Mark. That encourages me to think Buerhle will pitch well in the postseason.

2. Ozzie needs to understand that Marte wets the bed in ninth-inning situations. Damaso can handle the eighth. Once he gets through that, get him the hell out of there and go to Hermanson or Jenks.

Actually, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise when Willie got caught in that rundown. That very well could have been the only run the Sox scored, allowing Belliard's homer to tie it in the bottom of the inning. I'm just speculating that if Willie scores, Ozzie probably doesn't bat Paulie, whom Wedge decided to intentionally walk to pitch to Gload with two on.

This is a perfect example of how both managers can make a good move that ends up not working out for one of them because it ultimately comes down to execution on the field. The best a manager can do is put his team in a position to succeed. Can't do it for them.

Tonight our less-than-B-lineup kicked their butts.

To be fair, we didnt score particularly many runs against them with our crappy lineup, it's just that we threw our A pitching staff at them. If it weren't for Marte, they would not have scored at all and we probably would have won 1-0 had Hermanson started the inning.

But still, losing the ChicAAAgo Knights is pretty embarassing, especially in the middle of a pennant race, not that I'm complaining :D:

I guess this shows them.

How demoralizing does it have to be for the indians to not only lose with the wild card on the line, but to do it against guys who were in Charlotte just a month ago.

Also, I'll defend Damaso a bit, he looked pretty good in the 8th. I would never ever throw him out there in the ninth inning though. This year has pretty much proven he can't get it done in that inning, even against lefties. I still don't care for him that much, but he wasn't the absolute worst he could be tonight

How about Ozzie's in-game managing tonight? Making the right bullpen moves in those long games isn't easy. Pinch-hitting Konerko, drawing the walk, and pinch-running Pablo was crucial. Excellent.

Third best part of the victory: Ozzie can play whoever he wants tomorrow, and no one can say a damn thing because they won toKnight.

Second best part of the victory: Buehrle seems to be completely back in form. How huge is it to have him follow Contreras, with Garcia or Garland as #3 starter?

First best(est) part of the victory: Homefield advantage for the duration.

Nice job again by the Chokeland Indians - first inning, guy on third, nada...

I love this wonderful story crap perpetuated by ESPN - first they underachieve for the first four months and mope around at .500 - now they choke in the last week and can't beat the Royals, Scott Kazmir, Seth McClung and our B team bombers.

I'm no big Skip Bayless fan but he said this afternoon the Sox owe nobody anything and they don't. Ozzie's played the starters almost exclusively the last three weeks to get this done and they deserve a rest - especially since they were probably pretty hung over. You're not going to sit the starters all weekend anyway because they need some at-bats and it wasn't like he started Jon Adkins and followed him up with Bajenaru. But if it affects the Red Sox-Yankees, oooooh, the world is all aflutter and coming to an end.

I agree it was also big to beat the Indians so there isn't any tie and even any hint of - oooh, they blew a 15-game lead and wound up winning in a tiebreaker.

Naturally, they continue to miss the bigger story of a team that cares and battled and overachieved most of the year. But if it doesn't happen within 100 miles of the Atlantic Ocean then apparently it just doesn't matter.

Hey Cleveland, you just got beat by Ross Gload. Sleep well, chokers

You know what's funny? Some of the self-professed "old school" thinkers here are admitting to the EXACT same thinking about the Sox not clinching until Friday night's victory. They presume to make the rules for MLB.

The Indians announcers thought Ozzie had a brain cramp when he "wasted" Konerko when he should have known they would walk him. Last laugh: that was the winning run. Of course Ozzie could see exactly what was going to happen and knew one run would not be enough, so they would need another baserunner, ...

Kudos to Willie Harris for a heads-up baserunning play allowing Pods to take second. Game-winner as it turned out.

As for the Jndians losing to Charlotte, I don't think they were beaten by 3 runs in 13 innings, they were beaten by being held to 2 by the finest pitching staff in the majors!

This win felt great especially after Woody Paige said that the White Sox "snuck" into the playoffs on Around the Horn today.

I love sports reporters!

You want to know why Cleveland came so close to the Sox? Mike Greenberg had an interesting statistic yesterday on his show. Up until last night, since April 14, the Sox, Red Sox, Yankees, and Indians all had identical records (something like 90-63, iirc...it's early and I'm too lazy to check). But the Sox "snuck" into the playoffs!

Maybe it's just that Cleveland has been that good since April 14, and especially since the All-Star break. The Sox built up an early lead and kept it. They've played over .500 ball since the All-Star break. Cleveland won most of their 90 games since the break.

From a personal standpoint, I'm torn between the Sox having helped both the Yanks and Red Sox's chances tonight, but I also realize that the chances of the first 2 ALDS games being night games are greatly improved if either Boston or NY is the Wild Card, and I don't want to take off more vacation days than I have to....

Look at it this way, Cheeses. The Sox have a chance to eliminate ALL THREE of the teams the media loves -- Cleveland, Boston, and New York, in that exact order.

This weekend's series is essentially a best of 3 with Cleveland. The Sox just took Game 1. Cleveland is OUT if they can't win Games 2 and 3. After all the **** we went through the last 8 weeks, squeezing the last breath out of Cleveland's lungs seems perfect revenge. Sign me up for that assignment! One more victory, White Sox!

Boston becomes the wild card and the Sox get to shove it ten feet up the tailpipes of Gammons, ESPN, and all the Lovable Loser fans who will doubtlessly be in the stands wearing their Red Sox garb newly-purchased at Sports Authority. Sending the lot of them home "cursed again" would be mighty sweet. I'm up for that one, too.

And next comes New York -- assuming they can handle Anaheim, a big assumption knowing the big bad Bronx Bombers have Tanyon Sturtze in the bullpen. Winning this thing by stepping over NYC's darlings would be the ultimate gesture of our contempt for baseball's establishment.

I still don't care who the Sox might meet from the N.L. for the world championship, but I have a special place in my cold dark heart for the eternal damnation of Tony LaRussa -- so sign me up for Saint Louis. Besides, the people in central Illinois need to know the "other team" from Chicago is the one to fear.

That's what I call a fairytale story with a happy ending -- and it all starts by beating Cleveland one more time.

I completely agree. In fact, I just gave up reading most of the media about the Sox this season, preferring to get my news here at WSI and pick and choose the articles I read. Sometimes I'd peruse one of the negative ones, but for the most part, I tried to read interesting in depth pieces or articles after big wins and of course Kass.

At least I don't have to listen to talk radio and ESPN hasn't been interesting in years, IMO.

In either case, the Sox are in and everyone else has to come to Chicago. Home field forever. Let's finish this ****er once and for all and lift the fans of Chicago to heights unseen since WWI...
