From LA Times:
The White Sox agreed to pay $500,000 of the approximately $2 million remaining on Baldwin's contract. They had no intention of re-signing Baldwin, a free agent-to-be, and agreed to accept two marginal prospects--left-hander Onan Masaoka and right-hander Gary Majewski--and journeyman minor league outfielder Jeff Barry in exchange for the Dodgers picking up that $1.5-million tab.

Ugh. Reading that didn't help.
Whatever you think of JB, we got hosed on this deal big time. It's going to be very interesting to see what kind of deals go down at the deadline. If a starter of JB's caliber gets traded for real live major leaguers or genuine prospects, then this deal will look even worse.

JM, when there are trades involving cash, what do you think the amount of cash is? You make it seem like whenver cash is involved it is in the five figures...WRONG! Usually they go up to and past 1 million. CALM DOWN.

This makes it official. That trade was a total disaster. So we saved $1.5M? Now that trade makes no sense given that no one involved will ever make it to the majors. The Sox will lose that much in attendance drop, loss of mentoring, etc. Where is the upside?

Excellent point, Bucktown.
What was gained here, other than to lose some of JB's salary? What will we ever get out of the acquired players? Nothing. Why not have kept JB, let him start a couple more games and if we get back into a race, great. If we fall completely out of contention, he could have still been dealt after the deadline. We'd stand to lose nothing anyway, even if he'd have been claimed on waivers. I just don't see why we were in such a big assed hurry to dump the guy in the trash. At the very least, we could have still brought up Danny Wright to give him some starts and put JB in the pen to bolster our relief corps. KW is looking more idiotic day by day.
