Awesome start by Contreras again.

Everett's double represented everything that this team needed: A hit with RISP, a multiple RBI XBH and a big hit by Everett. Dye and Konerko had been getting pitched around because of Crazy Carl.

But we've pretty much got this division in the bag

I've said it before, but man, just think where we'd be without Jose Contreras? He's been absolute, stone-cold MONEY of late.

I'm beginning to feel it. Cleveland's got tight sphincter syndrome just like the Sox had, and it shows. Our magic # is 2 while Cleveland needs to win out the rest of the year.

Besides Contreras, we finally got some big O from Carl and Aaron, plus Dye and Pods did a good job as well. When Carl Everett gets a triple and Aaron actually launches one, you can tell things are starting to shift.

Looking forward to Kotex Boy's absence of a column tomorrow. It's hard to write a "Sox choke" article when it's Boston and the Indians doing a fair bit of that themselves.

Time for a brau or three.

By the way - whose choking now, getting shut out by a guy who came in with a 7.11 ERA???? Was listening to the end of the game on Cleveland radio and after shouting at the top of my lungs in my car, even the Cleveland announcers were talking that the race may have them tightening up.

I was also ready to send a letter to the Tigers asking them if they were proud of playing like dogs for 155 games and then deciding to show up and play like it's the World Series for 4 games. Go crawl back in your holes and get ready for the offseason, bums.

If we win tomorrow, we clinch the central, correct? We win the tie-break with Cleveland if they were to win three (3 wins for them and they clinch the wildcard, since 1 of the 2 yanks/bo sox will lose twice)... therefore we win the tiebreak?

I'm pretty sure a win tomorrow locks it up.

If we win tomorrow, the worst we can finish is 96-66.

The best that Cleveland could do (winning out) is 96-66.

We win a tie with Cleveland without a playoff game, as long as Cleveland beats out BOS or NYY for the wild card.

Just win, baby.

Yeah, I think this is right.

A win tomorrow gives the Sox 96 wins. If the Indians win tomorrow and sweep the Sox, they'll have 96 wins as well. If Boston loses tonight, they would need to win their next 4 to get to 96 wins, which would mean the Yanks would have to lose at least 3 more, giving them 94 wins tops. For the Yanks to get to 96 wins, they'd need to win tomorrow and take 2 of 3 against Boston, which would give the Red Sox 94 wins tops.

As long as the Blue Jays hang on tonight, a White Sox winner tomorrow clinches the AL Central title. Yes, Cleveland could still tie, but as others have said, they would lock up the wild card with four straight wins.

So let's win tomorrow and celebrate on the way to Cleveland!

Oh, and might as well win a couple more while we are in Cleveland.

EDIT: doesn't matter how the Red Sox do tonight. A win tomorrow will clinch it.

This is what I was thinking. Then I started thinking about all the crazy scenarios with Cleveland, Boston, and NYY; how between NYY and Bos there are three more losses, at least, then the same with the Sox and Indians this weekend, then depending on what happens tomorrow. Then my head exploded.

Currently:
White Sox 95-63
Indians 92-66

Yankees 93-65
Red Sox 92-66

I think my head was about to explode with all the different scenarios. Just win is the right way to go.

I wonder what J. Moronotti will be writing about in tomorrow's column...but not enough to read it.
I'll give you a dollar if he gets through the whole thing without using the "c" word. God, that guy is just so emblematic of the losers he claims Chicago to be.
Anyway, I know it's unofficial, but I had Pods as my pick to click tonight, and though it didn't involve driving in any runs, Pods did what Pods does best... get on base and cause trouble. Glad to see they overcame their early runner-stranding ways for a White Sox winner!

Just win is the right way to go.It's pretty simple, actually. One more win gives the Sox 96. The Tribe can tie that only if they win out. If they win 96, the only way they could NOT win the WC is if both NL Least teams got at least 96 wins. That can't happen.

Awesome start by Contreras again.

Everett's double represented everything that this team needed: A hit with RISP, a multiple RBI XBH and a big hit by Everett. Dye and Konerko had been getting pitched around because of Crazy Carl.

But we've pretty much got this division in the bag

As I posted on the post game thread last night, Carl breaking out of his slump is going to be huge. If Carl gets hot now, he can carry this team throughout the playoffs. I hope he's back in the 3 hole starting tomorrow.

Another great game by Contreras, and Ozuna has been looking good in the field as well as at the plate. Crede should be ready tomorrow and hopefully he stays hot at the plate.

One more win and the Sox are in! One more win and the Sox are in!

Here's the only bad scenario the rest of the way:

White Sox 0-4
Indians 3-1 with a loss tomorrow or 4-0
Yankees 2-2 with a win tomorrow
Red Sox 3-1 with a win tomorrow

Then we would have to lose to Cleveland on Monday and/or lose to the Yankees or Red Sox on Tuesday.

The Sox clinch a playoff spot tomorrow with a win (my preference) or a Red Sox loss or a Yankees loss. We clinch the division with a win and an Indians loss (also my preference). Go Sox. One more, baby!!

I've said it before, but man, just think where we'd be without Jose Contreras? He's been absolute, stone-cold MONEY of late. You mean even better than AJ Burnett?!

Good to see Pods stealing and Everett hitting again. Just as the Sox weren't as quite as good as their record in the first half, they can't be quite as bad as they've looked lately.

And the Tribe seems to have peaked too soon. Weird how that lost fly ball on Sunday stole their mojo. They're 18-7 in September -- just four days ago, it was 18-4 -- and it wasn't nearly enough to catch the Sox.

Sabathia vs. Possum, er, Fossum tomorrow and Garcia versus Grilli. Yeah, that Grilli. He held Seattle to 2 runs in 7 innings last week. I like Freddy in the broad daylight.

Even though our magic number is two, we can technically clinch the division with just a win tomorrow, regardless of what the Indians do. If both teams win tomorrow and then they sweep us, its a tie for first. But we would get the AL Central crown and they would be the wild card based on our better head-to-head record. Obviously, it would be great to see the Indians lose again so that they can't claim any part of the title.

You are correct. My error. A win tomorrow clinches the Central. Truthfully, I don't want to root against the Sox, but it wouldn't bother me if the Indians swept us to knock the Red Sox out. But I'd rather not see a tie with 96. Ah hell, let's just get the win tomorrow and party our asses off!!

I just though of it - it is IMPOSSIBLE for the Sox to clinch after a loss (like last year). They MUST win the game and clich on the same day!

Yeah, but it is possible for them to win tomorrow and the Indians win meaning there would be no field celebration. That would suck but I guess I wouldn't complain either. I'd take it. I bet the trip to Cleveland would be fun though!!!

Two points:

1) We haven't won it yet. When I was coming home from the game Sunday, people were saying, "We've got it!" Then we went and lost the first two to Detroit. MUST NOT LOSE FOCUS. Freddy, go out there and be as nasty as you ever have been! On the road, in daylight.

2) If we bear down, do all the little things right and win tomorrow, will the players be celebrating on the field? It seems there is a valid argument made that we would indeed win the Central regardless of what anybody else does from here on out.

So I'm wondering would they celebrate? Seems like a stupid question but all these number scenarios are flying around.

This was huge!

Way to go Offense picking it up Late, early start scared me.

I look at this as a win win situation

clinch tommrow: We can rest the guys in Cleveland, give the rooks a chance to show us something, and go into the post season with a rested and solid team, plus, we can tell Dmitri Young to shove it for saying the Kittens and the Tribe were the only real contenders in the central

win it in Cleveland: (1) Shove it down Clevelands throat
(2) Would be Sweet to win it against our Rivals
(3) With Cleveland against the wall, it might just
break the tribes back
(4) as stated earlier, the last time we clinched in cleveland
we went to the world series.

Down sides: (1) Win it tommrow involves a bar time celebration, maybe even a plane celebration, and we dont get to see our team on the field.
(2) Win it in cleveland, and they would get boo'd, I having a fealing Cleveland would react totally classless.

The More I think however, is there really ever a downside to winning the AL Central?

We got Cleveland by the throat. Lets take care of Detroit Tommrow, and Send Tampa some really nice bottles of booze to bust out the brooms on the indians

Here's another one:

http://mb26.scout.com/fclevelandindiansfrm1

Gotta give them credit though, I believe that's the site that threatened to ban members for trolling White Sox boards.

GREAT game tonight! Just win this thing already so I can get rid of my WildCard Migraine!

Those type of boards are so hard to read. WSI has the best.

We can actually take the division title by just us winning tomorrow

I wonder what J. Moronotti will be writing about in tomorrow's column...but not enough to read it.

Seeing how this past week he has only written about the Sox when they lose, he will probably write about the Bulls and how Reinsdorf is evil for actually wanting to check on Cury's health. Mark my words, when the Sox clinch, he'll write about 1: how the Sox will not win the playoffs 2: some dig on JR, probably bringing up 1994, 2000 all over again 3: the fact that "only" 2.3 million fans showed up this year. He is a tool

Easy, have you seen the attendance at the Cell since Sunday?
True story:

Cubs fan at work today: Is it true that there were only 13,000 people at the Sox game last night?

Me: Yeah, IN DETROIT, dumbass!

Isn't it fitting that the Cubs announcers and fans have a contest for how many people are at the game and our announcers and fans have one for what's going to happen IN the game.

Oh, not that it really means anything, but we are just one game behind St. Louis for best in baseball.

Funny how no one is talking up how flat the Cards have been in September...

That's a total insult!

That's probably because the Cards don't have a team in their division whose bodies were inhabited by aliens during the last two months of the season.

I hated the Indians before this year. Now, because of their psychotic level of play since Aug. 1, all the mediots can say about the Sox, the second best team in all of baseball, is how they've massively "choked". I said last week that if the Sox manage to win the division, they should be lauded for withstanding Cleveland's insane surge, not ridiculed for almost letting their lead slip away.

Seriously, stick the Toons in any other division, with the same second half as they've had, and they'd have been popping champagne a week ago. I want the Sox to eliminate these bastards this weekend as payback for taking some of the fun out of these last few weeks.

"Gosh... how will we ever manage a negative spin about his one?"

Well, they managed to do it. The headline for the Sox beating Detroit story on the website: "Close, but no cigars" ***??????

The article isn't that negative. They needed a negative headline to prevent anybody from reading further.

My favorite is the quote from Jose:

"But I don't feel like a super horse or stopper or anything like that."

A super horse?

Actually the first picture is of Scott Thompson, the second is of Mark McKinney from an SNL sketch.

I think Thompson's a much better match.

AMERICAN LEAGUE THE MARCH TO SOXTOBER

Close, but no cigars
Celebration near: 1 victory needed for division title

What Happened and what's next

THE AL CENTRAL: If the Indians win out and the Sox lose out, Cleveland takes it at 96-66. The Sox would finish at 95-67

THE AL WILD CARD AND THE SOX: The Sox have clinched a tie for the wild card. For the Sox to clinch the wild card, see at top.

IF THE SOX ARE IN A 3-WAY TIE? If Boston and NY win Thursday they would both finish 95-67 if Boston wins their weekend series 2-1. If that happens, Boston plays one game at NY on Mon for the AL East title. The loser travels to U.S. Cellular Field On Tue to play for the wild card berth

THE NIGHTMARE: The White Sox and Cle finish 95-67 tied for the AL Central and NY and Boston finish 95-67 in the AL East

THEN WHAT? On Monday the Sox play at Cle and Boston plays at NY. The winners are Division Champs. The losers play Tue for the wild card. The White Sox would host NY or Boston; Cle would host the Yankees or travel to Boston.

The Cubune puts that on the front page as if it's a realistic scenario. However, it's the most unlikely scenario per Chris DeLuca in the Bright One.

I see where Ted is comin from... this team is outta gas. three in a row... against terrible teams. Hafner is ice cold, Belliard and Blake couldnt get a clutch if for anything and Boone cant put a bunt down in 2 trys. It doesnt look good. A loss to the Devil Rays 1-0, is not a good sign at this point of the season... We cant beat them, how are we gonna beat any pitcher left on the schedule this year? I am crossin my fingers, but they are not the same team right now.

I copied this from the Cleveland board. Nice to know they are as psycotic as we are.:D: :D: :D:

I can't say enough how big that triple by Carl was last night. You could feel some of the guys on the bench let out a big breath of air and relax just a little bit.
Also,i am hoping to hear the national media give a lot of well earned credit to Ken Williams for taking a chance on Jose Contreras when no one wanted to touch the guy.
Seeing Pods stealing bases again was like coming back form a long sea voyage and seeing the familiar hills of home.
Maybe people can now relax a little and start enjoying what is going to be a great finish to a very weird, tense, and exciting season.
