Don't know if anybody else is watching this, but this is a close game we need Toronto to win...

Yeah, but actually the Yankees losing already does the same thing and they are getting beat worse.

Both losing would be like a cherry on a cherry on the ice cream sundae that is the toons losing...

Yup.

Graf grounds into double play- three more outs for Boston.

4-6-3....YES!...going to the 9th, Blue birds up 1

A Yankee loss is worthless without a Boston loss. If they both lose, the Riot # goes down by 1.

We would only need to win 2 of the remaining 5 if both NY and Boston lose tonight to clinch at least the wild card.

Not really- 3 playoff spots, 4 teams. That's all it boils down to- the team with the worst record goes home.

Scratch that, just one if they both lose.

what happens if the red sox win and yanks lose? what happens to the wild card magic number?

Gavin

Because the NYY-BOS setup means that at least one of the teams is going to lose two games, the White Sox right now only need to win ONE game if both of these teams lose tonight.

Does the RIOT number not factor ties?

I thought it came down to the # of losses.

2nd and 3rd, no outs for Toronto.

Both teams losing is better than only one losing but even only one losing is better than both winning.

Anyway Blue Jays in Whitesoxish position to score runs... no one out, runners on 2nd and 3rd......

Yes, but the RIOT figures out who will have the worst record in the end. If the Red Sox and Yankees lose, the RIOT drops to 2, which means that if the White Sox win tomorrow, or the Red Sox and Yankees lose tomorrow, the RIOT will be 1. And at 1, that means the White Sox at least clinch a tie for the Wild Card. In other words, if Boston and NY lose their games tonight, the White Sox need one win to clinch a tie for the Wild Card (which would be a one game playoff).

The RIOT number is for a tie. Add one to it for the total to win outright.

Well, if both NY and Bos lose, they both have 65 losses. Add two losses to one of them for their upcoming series and you get 67 losses. If the Sox lose out, they end up with 68 losses. One more win by the sox clinches at worst 67 losses.

You mean to force a tie? Because the way I see it, if we win tomorrow and then lose out, we've got 95 wins. If NY and BOS win the next two (after losing tonight), they will each go into the weekend with 94 wins. If that series goes 2-1, we tie for the wild card with the loser of the East.

EDIT: nevermind... just saw the responses while I was typing this.

Gavin

So basically, if both teams lose and the Sox (pathetically) take 2 of their last 5 games, it's a clinch... if they take only one it's a tie?

What an amazingly crazy night in the AL playoff chase.

The playoff races are more exciting and intense than I can every remember.

If Toronto and Balt. can hold on, we might be celebrating a playoff spot tomorrow.

It would be great to have that in the bag by the time the Sox head to Cleveland.
