Golly gee, that was a great pitching performance by Brandon McCarthy last night!!! He was sure mowing down those Twins hitters!!!

Joe Crede's home run to give the Sox the lead was peachy keen, too!!!

And how about that effort that Aaron gave on that fly ball to him in the 11th inning? He was sure running hard after that!!!

How about that great effort by Iguchi on the same ball that Rowand missed!!!! I think he said "you take it" in Japanese which shows he had his head in the game and that he doesn't let any language barrier take away from his on-field communication skills! He'll get the next one!

The last time Tampa Bay visited Cleveland, they swept the Indians in 3 games (in August)

However, they played again a couple weeks later in TB and Cleveland won 3 of 4.

Yeah, those poor St. Louis Cardinals who are currently resting up their injured players, getting others fresh for the playoffs and setting up their rotation. Look what having a huge lead did to them last year! All they did was get to the World Series. Poor Cardinals.

I looked in my newspaper this morning. It says we are still in 1st place by 1.5 games, and that we are 3 games up over the wildcard.

I pulled out my calculator, and found we have the best record in the AL.

I pulled out my pocket schedule, and found our next 6 games are against the Twins and the Tigers who are both terrible, injured and just playing out the string.

I see no reason to not believe that we will be in the playoffs.

You're right. The White Sox have not played a team with a better record all season. Except for Frank Thomas, who was injured when the season began, they haven't had any devastating injuries. Their rookie-callup starter has be phenomenal in his second stint with the team.

People, including many WSI posters, just assume the Sox will lose.

Chisox353014
09-24-2005, 04:24 PM
All right, it's simple: If the Sox go 5-4 the rest of the way, they make the playoffs.

Here's why. The Yanks just lost to Toronto, meaning they and Boston each have 64 losses. They play each other 3 more times, which means one of those teams will finish with at least 66 losses. The Sox only have to finish ahead of one of those two teams to guarantee the Wild Card (the AL West is a non-issue with Oakland's fading away). If the Sox win 5, we finish with 65 losses, and can't be edged out. Even as bad as we've been playing, we're still slightly over .500 for the month and after the break. The Sox can finish this with no help needed from anyone. Who cares about the division at this point.

Four games in Detroit with Garland, Contreras, McCarthy, a rested pen, and then Freddie pitching away in a day game on Thur (ptc hint on the last one there), all with a well rested pen.

Not sure whether to post this on a sunny day, dark cloud day, or at all, but here goes . . .

Three questions:

(1) How many wins did you, dear readers (not just you, credefan24), think the Sox would have this year?
(2) Have they passed this number already?
(3) If so, is there any way you can call this season a disappointment?

The way I look at it, if the White Sox win the next two, and the Jndjans lose at least one more with TB, the division is ours. With a magic number of 1 and a three game lead going into Cleveland, even a sweep (worst case scenario) would result in a tie where the Sox would take the division and the Jndjans the Wild Card.

Well, this is it... backs to the wall, odds dwindling. Either way, it's been a hell of a run, Sox fans. Wanted to bring this one back because the minute it was posted, the Sox went on a 16-1 run and won the series in the process.

I'll leave it stuck until the Sox have no chance of winning the WS anymore. Once it becomes obvious that is the case, please feel free to post some memories from the past 12 months, because it has been worth every minute...

White Sox vs. Red Cubs Tuesday at The Cell.

Gotta love this post.

I never doubted - even before the "Joe Crede HR" game.

This year I was confident until the weekend. I hope the White Sox pull some miracle run here and will enjoy it when it happens.

I enjoyed this season until the last two weeks. The White Sox played excellent until the ASB. It seemed as though the long 2005 and Bud Selig's ****ing bull**** World tournament took a lot out of our staff.

I'm pulling out Jay Trotter for the miracle.

I'll believe unless the bloody end comes. I continue to remind myself how frustrating the last month of the season was in 2005. In the end, the team got it together, and yes, 16-1, and the World Series victory. This team needs to go 11-1 to have a good shot. Don't Stop Believing!!

Can Boston sweep the Twin?:D:

FJA
09-19-2006, 09:54 AM
While it doesn't look good, I am completely incapable of not paying attention at all. Rather than asking whether or not the playoffs are likely, I'd rather ask if there is something to hope for.

First, with regard to the Tigers. In third place, I don't know if I want to look anywhere past the second place team, but remember how quickly we shrunk the Tigers' ten-game lead just a month ago? I think the Sox are capable of playing that well again, and I also think the Tigers are capable of playing that poorly.

But as far as the Twins are concerned, all I want is a chance going into that final weekend. A sweep is of course unlikely, but this team has pulled out a lot of unlikely results over the past year. So let's look at what needs to happen in order for the Sox to have a chance with a sweep to the playoffs:

Twins:
Twins at Boston - 1-2 (Red Sox have been playing a lot better lately, and it is very difficult to win a series (let alone sweep) at Fenway)
Twins at Baltimore - 2-1
Royals at Twins - 2-2 (Twins have had some trouble with KC, AND KC is playing much better ball)

Sox:
Tigers at Sox - 2-0 (essential, but Rogers has been their only consistent pitcher of late, so quite possible)
Mariners at Sox - 3-1
Sox at Indians - 2-1

Obviously, we need some help from the Twins, but I don't think it's an unreasonable amount of help. Six on the road and four against the pesky Royals isn't exactly ideal for them either. Remember - what they want is NO pressure going into the final weekend. I also don't think it is unreasonable to envision the Sox winning every series leading up to the final weekend. We'd need a sweep, but that's something to hope for.

If the Twins play out as above and the Sox manage to sweep either the Mariners or Indians, we don't even have to count on beating Santana, as two of three would put us in a tiebreaker which I assume Santana wouldn't pitch, since he will likely go that final weekend.

Anything more than that (e.g., Sox winning out, Minn. dropping two of three in Bal. or all three in Bos. (or, what the hell - both)) is icing on the cake.

All of this is premised on the Tigers keeping pace, which they might not.

So, Sox fans, don't quit yet; there is still something to hope for. The Sox need to play like they have nothing to lose - and they are so far back now, that they really don't - and hope that putting pressure on the teams ahead of us to win - and a little luck - gives us a chance heading into that final weekend.

I'm the last person to put any kind of positive spin on this (because I gave up over a week ago)... but, the Sox only need to make up 1.5 games before that Twins series to have a shot at taking down the Twins in a sweep.

I've felt that the Sox were going to get swept in Minnesota for a while now, but it would be nice to at least put a scare into the Twins.

Agreed that it is quite optimistic. However, I agree with it in the sense that now we have to focus on staying alive. We need to focus on one day at a time and living to fight the next day.
While I don't want to go to MN down 3 games, technically, we'd still have a fighting chance.

After looking at some of the issues facing the other playoff-bound teams, the White Sox have to be kicking themselves for not playing better against CLE and KC this year because all of the division and WC leaders have some serious issues. Look- the team didn't want it this entire year. No major strings of wins, no sustained magic. That's not going to happen in 11 games, if it didn't happen in 151.

(It really irritates me that in Twins news articles and such they're already planning to be in the playoffs. In the interviews team members are saying things like, "When we are in the playoffs, blah blah blah..."

You don't know you're going to be in, guys. But hey, go ahead and jinx yourselves, that's fine.)

Here's how I'm looking at it:

The Sox need to sweep the three game series at the Jake.

KC needs to go 3-1 against the Twinkees.

If that can happen, the playoffs begin Friday night in Minnesota. The Sox will enter the playoffs down 0-3 in a Best of Seven series. If they can come back and win four straight against the Twins (with the 4th game being in Chicago on Monday), then we go to the next round.

Gotta love your chances when they're riding on the back of *gulp* the Royals. :(:

Got no one to blame but ourselves. Should've never gotten to this point.

Haha. Yeah, well, you never know. The Royals haven't been doing all that bad in the second half... well, for them, at least...

I like your thinking. C'mon KC, make it interesting. Fans were making a big issue out of the Sept. 30 game being televised, so do your part so that that game is meaningful. LET'S GO WHITE SOX!!:gulp: :gulp:

Well, Baseball Prospectus' updated Playoff odds gives us a .07145 chance of making the playoffs. I guess we are still hanging by a thread.
I can see us getting hot, but I think asking for 3/4 from KC is just too much. Taking 2 of 4 from Seattle (among other things - Oak Series, Detroit Series) was a killer.

That said, I'm still praying for a miracle.
Go Sox!
Go KC!

Guys, what people forget is that Minny is still chasing the division. No way they don't roll KC at least twice.

Got no one to blame but ourselves. Should've never gotten to this point.Well, the Royals did take 2 out of 3 in the baggie dome the last week in August. Other than Santana, the three other starters the Twinks are throwing out there are eminently beatable.

One possible good omen is that in order for the Sox to make the playoffs we would have to end the season with an 8-game winning streak. We've had good luck with those in the past.

all we have to do is win 2 of 3 from the Indians, and if KC sweeps Minnesota, the playoffs start for us on Friday night!
