Great win, and an especially great effort from Jose Contreras and the Bullpen did a masterful job. WTG Damaso and Capt. Jenks!! The new hero of the Sox bullpen.

Congrats also to the White Sox for cracking the 90 Win plateau. That's always a welcome milestone.

Certainly the MVP of the 2nd half. He single handedly won this game for us today. It seems like 100 years ago when we were talking about trading him for AJ Burnett.:D:

Actually, it is 10. If the Sox win 10 more games, 2 of those at a minimum would be against Cleveland. With those 2 loses, Cleveland couldn't catch the Sox even if they won out.

I really like the way Marte is throwing the ball right now too. It's amazing what you can do when you have your head clear and have no distractions. That was vintage 2002 Marte. 94-95 mph gas that the Twins couldn't touch. Did anyone else see how far off the plate Jacque Jones was standing against Marte? He wanted no part of that inside heat.:D:

Sox are 90-58, Indians are 87-62. If the Sox win 10 more games, at least 2 of them would be against Cleveland. With those two losses, the best Cleveland can do is 98-64. Sox record would be at worst 100-62 with 10 wins.

On a day when the umps did a couple things to put the early hex on the Sox and our hitters couldn't seemingly get a meaningful hit to save their lives, how sweet it is to see this team eek out yet another 1-run victory and take 2 out of 3 from the Twins having only scored 4 runs total. Mercy.

It's hard to overstate the enormous cojones on Contreras. This guy has saved the White Sox's bacon, plain and simple.

Also contributing in a significant way were Jeff Blum with ubersolid defense at third, Rowand/Konerko/AJ/Dye with clutch 2-out at-bats, and Marte and Jenks finishing off the Twinkies in the 9th.

I hate the way this team is hitting right now, and I also didn't like seeing Dye getting thrown out at second when there was a runner in front of him who could have made it a 2-run game going into the bottom of the 9th, but the team almost held serve this weekend, which is what I had hoped for, lowered its Magic Number by 2, and put more pressure on the Indians to try and take 2 of 3 from us this week.

Personally, I hope for a major breakout of our offense against the Indians. We can't hope for performances like Contreras and Garland's every night out.

11!!!

Huge win and great way to win a one run game. If the offense can really get back on track, that would take care of a lot of anxiety. Cleveland can be stopped but the Sox need more scoring. Amazing. 90 wins on September 18, but we still have to sweat it.

No, the magic number is 11.

Let's walk it through, assuming the Sox win every game and Cleveland loses every game:

9/19 Sox: 91-58, Indians: 87-63 Sox +4.5 with 13 left (Cleveland 12 left)

9/20 Sox: 92-58, Indians: 87-64 Sox +5.5 with 12 left (Cleveland 11 left)

9/21 Sox: 93-58, Indians: 87-65 Sox +6.5 with 11 left (Cleveland 10 left)

9/22 Sox: 94-58, Indians: 87-66 Sox +7.5 with 10 left (Cleveland 9 left)

9/23 Sox: 95-58, Indians: 87-67 Sox +8.5 with 9 left (Cleveland 8 left, Sox clinch TIE. If the Sox go 0-9, they finish 95-67; if Cleveland goes 8-0, they finish 95-67.)

That's a combination of 10 Sox wins and Cleveland losses to TIE. The magic number is 11. There must be a combination of Sox wins and Indians losses totalling 11 for the Sox to win outright.

I don't want to kiss my sister.

This is the kick in the ass they need to go deep into the playoffs. They are going to make the playoffs because they are going to play very well over the last two weeks of the season. It is better to have to play well at the end to get in then to have the Division clenched a week or two before the end of the season and our players get rusty before the playoffs resting the last few games.

I didn't see as much of this game as many of you did, as I was mostly watching the Bears' game; however, I flipped to this game during commercials and halftime, as well as after the game.

Bad Bobby Jenks does it again! It seems like Marte's getting a tad bit of confidence back. Jose Contreras seriously needs to be in the playoff rotation (EL Duque, your spot will be in the bullpen). Composure is what that man's got.

Just enough runs to win it DEFINES "White Sox Baseball!"

He's been a rock of late for this team, hopefully Freddy will avoid his slow starts and get it rolling early against the tribe tomorrow.

I was surprised with the extended rosters that Ozzie did not pinch run Willie instead of Gload in the 8th. It did not come into play (thanks Punto) ,but why not use the extra people for a situation like this. Anyway, good win going into the tribe series.:gulp:

This is the sort of game that gives momentum for a HUGE streak!!!

No offense, but aren't you getting a little carried away? This was a game where we only got 8 hits, none for extra bases, 2 runs total. The winning run scored on an error. 7 runners left on. I think it was a great win and much needed, but I don't know if it is the sort that starts a huge streak.

If you're referring to the pitching and defense, that could be another matter. Maybe Freddy will be more motivated tomorrow. But I didn't see anything click in the offense to convince me they're turning it around. Hopefully they will, we'll have to wait and see.

Winning games is what's important right now. Who gives a **** how they win? The Sox did this all through April and May- do just enough to win.

What - would you rather have that team full of sluggers that would score 9 runs and lose in the late innings because of Koch or someone else's incompetence? No. You take wins where you can get them. Once a baseball team gets that winning feeling back, then it becomes easier to string 'em together. So, yes, you can build off of wins like this.

I'd say you nailed it. I wasn't sure it was a good idea given the situation--taking Paulie's bat out in what could have become an extra-inning game--but Paulie's been in a bit of a slump the past few games, you have to go for the win, and it couldn't have worked out better.

Once on the bus I felt like John Candy in Planes, Trains and Automobiles only we weren't singing Meet the Flintstones...I led songs everything from Run Around Sue to Na Na Na Na to The Go GO Sox fight song. It's good to be home. After a nice shower and shave I'm heading up to the South Side. :D:

I feel like I just walked in on the last part of a conversation. In fact, I think I did... :?:

I"ve been keeping a blog/journal of a jog I took after the tough loss to KC that turned into a marathon across state ala Forest Gump in all of the post game threads...

The Sox take 2 of 3 in September, in Minnesota, in games that matter. This team has won when it had to. Let's finish the season on a roll, grinding out series wins. That's how they got here.
Which reminds me. Due to the race being so tight with the Indians, we are not able to put things into perspective. We won two series against the Twins... IN Minnesota... in the stretch run!!! Not only that, but we put our foot on their throats and all but eliminated them (E# is 1). Remember the dark clouds running wild when the Twins swept us at home in August: "Its all over. We just can't beat the Twins late in the season. It is a tale of two seasons, they beat us when it matters." and so on? We won two late series in the Metrodome, Cleveland is nothing.

I like this post. I never really thought of it like that. But, I think we all know how hard it has been for The Sox to win up there anytime, let alone it has been impossible in September in recent years. Hopefully that gives us a little swagger. Your right on too, coming home to play a team that we are 10-3 against with FG, MB, and JG pitching should make people fell pretty good about our chances.

Thank you. This -- in a nutshell -- is why the people who piss and moan on this message board are held in such low regard. Last month they were pissing and moaning about Minnesota. This month they are pissing and moaning about Cleveland. And the only thing you can ever count on about them is this: THEY ARE ALWAYS PISSING AND MOANING ABOUT SOMETHING.

Not one of these people -- not one -- was here apologizing for their earlier child-like whining after the Sox took two out of three hard fought games from the Twins later that same month. Having lost a game in the standings, even Gardenhire was reduced to admitting "well we made it interesting." *****! His team tanked right afterwards.

Now nearly a full month later and the Sox virtually squeeze the last breath from the Twins inside their own house, not one peep -- NOT ONE -- from these same whiny overgrown children. They're too busy crapping their pants over Cleveland, nevermind the lead we enjoy and the dwindling number of games they have to catch us.

If these people get ridiculed at WSI, it is only because they have 100 percent of it coming.
