Karsay Could Be Missing Piece

Right-handed reliever Steve Karsay would probably make the Yankees' bullpen the most formidable in the league, and they are pressing to sign him.

Steve Karsay and his wife, Kori, are staying in Manhattan this week, courtesy of the Yankees. They are shopping, seeing friends, serving as role models for the city's renewed "I love New York" campaign.

Even better, when the Karsays return to their Arizona home Sunday, they'll probably be some $20 million richer than when they left.

"If they can get something done, that'd be outstanding," Karsay, a product of Christ the King, said yesterday.

"They" are his agents, Alan and Randy Hendricks, and the Yankees, and they are indeed getting along very well as the two sides mop up the details in what will likely be a four-year contract paying Karsay about $5 million per season.
