View Full Version : A prediction thread for Cubune story angles on the Sox in the postseason

So it appears that the Cubune is bound and determined to toss as many nails on the road to the playoffs for the White Sox as it can, having printed stories comparing the Sox to some of the all-time greatest chokes down the stretch, including the vaunted '69 Cubs and the 1964 Phillies, and today printing another unnecessary garbage piece about Tom Gamboa.

The Sox are going to the playoffs, I'm convinced, so I thought it would be fun to offer our predictions as to what story angles the Cubune will pursue as the Sox potentially advance through October.

First round: no doubt, the failures of 1983, 1993 and 2000 will loom large in the Cubune's articles. That's a given.

ALCS: I don't know. We've never played an ALCS game to date, so it probably depends on our opponent.

World Series: 1919, 1919, and 1919. If you'll recall, the White Sox threw that series. I'm sure the Cubune won't let you forget.

Any other ideas?

Technically, 1983 and 1993 were both ALCS series with the 2 division structure in place.

Here's a few they'll play up big time:

Orton, Bears score 10 points, turn the corner toward playoffs
First double digit output of season turns tide in loss
Will Benson start next Sunday vs. Packers?

CHICAGO--With baseball season over, all of Chicago's attention will be focused on football now, and the Bears did not disappoint Sunday afternoon, putting on an air show worthy of Peyton Manning in a 17-10 loss to Minnesota. Rookie QB Kyle Orton led the Bears down the field on two separate, non-consecutive occasions thanks to a combined 62 yards rushing from Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson. The vertical game was in full force, as Orton threw for 73 yards on 8 of 34 passing with 1 interception.

White Sox ALCS Game Pre-Empted For Special Bears Pregame Live, Jim Rome, Nanny 911

CHICAGO--Due to the expectation of low ratings, Comcast SportsNet, WMVP AM 1000 and FOX TV have all decided not to air the anti-climatic ALCS featuring the Boston Red Sox and Chicago. Comcast has decided to run a special 2 hour presentation of "Chicago Bears Live, Push to .500." Watch as Dan Jiggets, Mike Adamle and Richard Dent once again tell you how and why this team has literally zero offense with no new insight.

WMVP and ESPN Radio have decided to air an extended Jim Rome Live program, during which he'll talk about Terrell Owens, Randy Moss and of course how the White Sox lousy promotions make them look like a minor league outfit.

Fox has decided to air its largely unpopular Nanny 911 instead of live coverage of the game. The show is slated to be cancelled without any new episodes, but reruns are expected to draw significantly more interest than the baseball game.

This year's playoffs are significant in that the Boston Red Sox, Chicago's sister team, can become back to back champions for the first time since 1916.

"We know the country is rooting for use, so we're going to go out there and do the best we can," says future Cub and current Red Sox CF Johnny Damon. "The support we're receiving in Chicago is especially heartwarming. We feel your pain, Chicagoans! I wish we could be on the North Side celebrating with you....Maybe I will next year. "

Furcal: Cubs are my No. 1 Choice

ATLANTA- Rafael Furcal took a few moments in the on deck circle during the 9th inning of last nights nail-biting Braves-Cardinals NLCS game to indulge Tribune reporters and talk about his future with the Cubs.

"It's something I'm really looking forward to," Furcal said, before leaving to bat. "Cubs fans are the best in baseball."

Oops, you're right. So they're covered: for the ALDS, there's 2000, for the ALCS, there's '93 and '83, and for the WS, there's 1919.

White Sox playoff coverage will be buried between the horse racing results and the strip club ads. About the same as they did for the every Wolves championship.

Coming Sunday in WomanNews: October is here, and that means playoff baseball. Although our Cubbies fell just a teeny bit shy this year, Chicago's other team, the White Sox managed to barely skate in. Complete coverage of this past week's post-season games.

I fixed your post for you.

I don't see what's so funny about Cub fans saying the Sox are choking, will get swept in the playoffs, and only draw 4,000 fans per game.

The Heckler- dedicated to proving that Cub fans really, really, really, really,
really, really REALLY don't care about the White Sox.

Who the hell cares what they write anyway? Last I checked the Marlins
were still the 2003 World Champions, and the 2003 Cubs still lost after
being up 3-1. No amount of playoff losses by the Sox will ever erase that.

Thousands May Die At US Cellular- Cubs offer Wrigley Field as "Safe" Venue

Today Andy MacFail, President of the Chicago Cubs, offered Wrigley Field as a replacement site for the 2005 Playoffs. Widespread reports of falling concrete and unsafe conditions at US Cellular Field have forced the White Sox to look for alternative facilities as the playoffs draw near.

Andy MacFail extended goodwill to his impovershed neighboors to the South. "The White Sox usually draw four or five thousand fans. They may draw several thousand fans peaked by a rare postseason appearance and the foundation of US Cellular will not be able to handle the additional stress. As a good neighbor we would like to extend Wrigley Field as a possible replacement site. We have also renovated Thillens Stadium if the White Sox would like a smaller facility to experience playing in front of a capacity full crowd as we have for the past two decades. Texas provided hospitality of several cities and offered their stadiums to host the New Orleans Saints and the victims of Hurricane Katrina and we would like to extend our hospitality to the refugees of US Cellular." White Sox management remains silent on their depleted ballpark and possible playoff venues.

Pictures of a newly remodeled Thillens Stadium remodeled through the generosity of the Chicago Cubs has been offered as an alternative site for the 2005 American League Playoffs.

Since 1938, Thillens Baseball Stadium has been located at Devon and Kedzie Avenues in Chicago. With two well groomed diamonds, 2,200 seats, P.A. Systems, electronic scoreboards and field lights, this facility is donated as a public service to help nonprofit groups such as the White Sox raise funds and have fun.
