Just looking through the important dates section on MLB.com and I came across this...

October 3 - Beginning today, players may be traded between Major League clubs without waivers in effect.

How is that possible? Does that exclude playoff teams?

Other important dates
- October 4 - Division Series Begins
- October 11 - League Championship Series Begins
- October 22 - World Series Begins

Well, a player had to be on a team as of Sept. 1 in order to be on a team's postseason roster. So, unless there is a prohibition against doing so, there's nothing to stop a playoff team from making a deal. However, the player they acquire could not play in the playoffs. So, there is a disincentive for a playoff team to make a trade during that time.

Ok, well that makes plenty of sense.
I thought trading wasn't open until after the playoffs though.
