They claim he violated his contract

From FOX/AP:
The Orioles (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/team/71587) said in a statement that they were placing the right-handed pitcher on unconditional release waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract.

Ponson was arrested a week ago on a drunken-driving charge, the latest alcohol-related legal problem for a pitcher who started the 2004 season as the ace of the Baltimore Orioles (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/team/71587)' staff. He was charged in January with driving under the influence in Florida, a case that has not yet been resolved.

Does this mean anyone can pick him up?

This guy has a whole lot of potential, but his head is all messed up.
Maybe a change of scenery?

This is the same guy who punched out a judge in Aruba. He'd look great at the Worthless Confines.

Both he and Milton Bradley could be put on the "All Stupid Team".

And some people think the Sox are imploding...

This is a spectacular death spiral for the ages!

You've got a starting pitcher and an outfielder, shore up the middle relief by adding Frank Francisco to the team

I like how they waited until today, After the post season roster deadline, to put him on... I bet the Yankees or Boston would have picked him up otherwise.

I was thinking the same thing.

And to think some people around here think our pitching staff needs help

ROFLMAO, I never meant the Sox!

But I wasn't clear on that. I'm just saying the man does have potential. But I guess so does Carry Wood(s).

I'm just glad the sox didn't waste money on this fool when he was a free agent a couple years back. I know there was a temptation to do so.

I remember people clamoring for the Sox to sign him before 2004. Good thing he didn't because he turned into Jamie Navarro as soon as he got his pay day.

Didn't the Sox try to get him when he was a free agent?

It amusing how desperate they are.Yeah, it's already being reported that Cashman is looking at him. They couldn't use him if they made the playoffs, but I guess they think if he gives up his patented 6 or 7 runs and the Yankees score 8 or 9 runs, they'll be golden for the final stretch.

I love how crappy their pitching situation has become.

Nice to see that the "slimmed down" Sammy is enjoying his first year in Baltimore - you know, his new "house".....

- Palmeiro sneeks some of his roids and gets busted by MLB
- Mazilli "He Gone"
- Sosa's career year
- Ponson being Ponson

...of course, things aren't much better in "The Worthless Confines" - I love that phrase!!! :D:

Yes, and Kenny and JR screwed us again by not nabbing the concensus top free agent pitcher of the '03-'04 offseason. They tried to make amends by acquiring some Franky Garcia clown, but come on. Sidney Ponson!
