Remember one of the principles of the Great Chicago Baseball Double Standard:

1) Cub fans who root against the Sox are showing that they are great, loyal fans who stick to their principles by refusing to ever support the hated Sox. Their anti-Sox stance in the face of a Sox playoff run shows that Cub fans are die-hard and have real character. This attitude is to be lauded by all Chicagoans.

2) Sox fans who root against the Cubs are showing that they are hateful, bitter, fans who are obsessed with the crosstown team. Their classless anti-Cub stance in the face of the Cubs playoff run in 2003 was shameful and showed that Sox fans are jealous, sore losers who have no character. This attitude is a disgrace to all Chicagoans.

This is just one of many double standards that exist regarding the Sox and Cubs.

I was thinking along similar lines. I have read his columns a few times, and, his views on the Sox not withstanding, he always comes across as a whiner. One of those sushi eating pseudo-intellectuals who fancy themselves as having all this great, common sense knowledge, when in fact, are far removed and sheltered from the real world in their north shore homes or Lincoln Park condos. We all know the type. They think they are oh so much better and hip then the rest of us because they've got the latest smooth jazz CD, or listen to NPR while driving to whatever the latest trendy restaurant is, while wearing their sweaters draped over their backs with the sleeves tied around their necks. Me thinks that the "worldly" Eric Zorn would be lost, confused, and scared if he ever found himself south of McCormick Place, or anwhere west of the loop/Tribune Tower where he couldn't see and use the United Center as a point of reference.

Well said. He's a spindly (in mind and body) piece of ****. Go write another half-column to the homely, old, dowdy cooze, Mary Schmich.

I have often wondered why Mary and Zorn are even published in the Trib. They have no speciality, have no insight into sports or business or politics. They just write completely random, non-informative "articles" like Mary's winter coat shopping and how the non-native Chicagoan never experienced a Chicago winter. LAAAAA. She mistakenly bought a jacket when she needed a winter coat. HAhahaha, thanks for sharing you warm climate-native, pointless-article-writing, kite-flying, skank.

I'd be above this sort of sentiment if I didn't know for certain how high-five delighted Sox fans were at the Cub crumble of 2003; how Steve Bartman is more beloved on the South Side than he is in Florida, home of the Marlins; how thrilled you are now that the promising, talented, highly-paid 2005 Cubs have betrayed their fans with mediocrity and injury. - Zornhole

'It's the fault of Sox fans that I'm rooting against the Sox...' Zorn has just blamed us, that's so common among Cub fans. They hate the Sox only because of Sox fans.

Well, I hate the Cubs because of arrogant pud Cub fans, like Eric Zornhole.

Back in 2001, Zorn wrote that one great thing about the Cubs being in first
place was the collapse of the White Sox. So our "beloved" Bartman has nothing

This is also the gospel according to Les Grobstein. Cub fans were the most

Assuming for the sake of argument that this is true, I would have no problem with it, if every issue of the Trib contained a prominent "anti-Sox-bias" disclaimer like the "pro-Sox-bias" disclaimer on this site. Unfortunately, here in the real world, the Trib pretends that they have no bias.

With the references to "cubune" in the cubune, Moronotti's reference to "internet sites" and other direct references to WSI, it's obvious we're more than a mere annoyance to the pro-cub media in this town. Kudos to WSI. Keep fighting the power.

Oh yeah, Kass would (and has) posted similar columns in the past. I don't think too many Flub fans worry about him. So I wouldn't worry about Zorn. With the Cubs stinking up the Urinal these days anyway, they don't deserve a second thought at all right now. Let those spoiled North Side brats stew in their "frustration" all by themselves. I use "quotations" because those idiots are the only people in the world who actually get off on being part of a "lovable loser" mentality. Go to Murphy's or the Cubby Bear after a loss and try to find all that angst they claim to have. You won't because it isn't there. It's all a show. Sox fans, thinking about that kind of nonsense is just not worth our time.

BTW, I am a die-hard Sox fan, but I kinda like sushi and do listen to NPR every now and then, and haven't voted Republican in over 20 years. Out here in Elgin, I'm a true rarity.

Oh, no, that's cool ! I'm sorry you misunderstood me. I wasn't trying to rip on people who like those things. If somebody really likes to eat sushi, go to Starbucks, listen to shows on NPR, etc., that's fine. What I'm talking about is people who do things like that to make themselves look hip, or present some sort of facade. For example, if one listens to NPR because they enjoy the programming, or eats sushi or quiche because, hey, it tastes good, great ! What I can't stand is when somebody is constantly telling me or implying to me how smart and intellectual they are because they listen to NPR, yet when one tries to have a conversation with them about world events, or whatever the political issues are going on that day, they don't really have much to say, or just stare at you blankly. Or when people go to whatever the latest restaurant or coffee house just to say they've been there, or hang out there; not because they actually like the food or beverages served there. Kind of like lots of people who go to Cubs games. Don't know a whole hell of alot about baseball, but as long as they can see, be seen, and PARTY AT WRIGLEY ! WOOO ! Which brings me back to Eric Zorn. I've read his articles before, and, in my opinion, he really doesn't write about anything. He comes across as a sanctamonious snob, telling us about how he lost a pair of socks in the laundry, or his wine he had with dinner last night wasn't as good as he thought it would be. That's all. People like that are sort of like a souflet- Real fancy looking on the outside, but once you bite into it, a whole lot of nothing and hot air, and not much in the way of actual substance or nutritional value.

Dear Mr. Zorn:

I am shocked. Shocked and appalled that this type of journalism is tolerated in todays society. Opinions are one thing, ad hominem attacks are another. You are allowed to have your feelings on the White SOX, whether it is like or dislike. I understand that we are living in an age where "Free-press" reigns supreme, and that you can actually take someone to court for slander and yellow journalism.

What i don't undersand is why you have to literally mock the South Side. Are you trying to drive away paying customers? Do you and your mediot friends seriously think that bashing the south side by calling it "Mudville" is not detrimental to your papers success? Do you not realize that SOUTHSIDERS READ YOUR ARTICLES?!?! I am suprised that this was allowed. Simply put, this shows me that not only do you care about who you insult, but that neither do your superiors. I don't care that you don't like the SOX, nor that you feel the need to point out their "TOXIC" number. I don't see why you feel the need to write an article bashing the people of this city. What were you thinking? Are you purposely trying to displace particular people in this city based on their opinions?? this is bush league. Ironically, it is literally Bush league, as in G.W. Putting off the people that support and pay for you to continue to work is one of the most self-centered, rude and dispassionate things you could do.

The reason i wrote this letter has everything and nothing to do with the above. I have decided to never purchase, let alone pick up, another Chicago Tribune in my life-time. It is a sick and twisted game your company plays with this city and all of you deserve to be fired. This would NEVER stand in ANY other city, and it is disappointing that it did here, in a great town like Chicago. I am disappointed in you and hope that you write beck to inform me as to why you wrote such slanderous remarks about a team in YOUR OWN CITY. Voicing an opinion is one thing, but actually ridiculing and berating the people that read your crap is beyond moronic.

Ok, it's quite a snotty article, and seems like it belongs more on someone's blog than in a major newspaper, but someone's gotta say it. This team is going no where but down right now. They are terrible. Ok, they've faced some decent pitchers. But still, those pitchers' ERA isn't 0.00 on the season. They can be scored upon. Ridiculous.

For some background that will probably help explain Zorn's attitude (other than being a Tribune writer), check his blog on the Tribune's website. For the very best in Zorn and Tribune balloon-popping, read Neil Steinberg's columns in the Sun-Times. He has utterly no patience for the Tribune's self-importance, and regards Zorn as one of its most glaring examples.

Zorn's accomplished what he set out to do, which is to get people to talk about his column. He's just a more articulate version of Mariotti with pieces like this. A shame too -- he's like his paper, in that all his talent could be put to such better use if he didn't take himself so seriously.

Great job Andrew, you articulated what a lot of us here would just love to say to that nerd Zorn (only I would have a few more expletives in my letter):D:

Please note that Eric Zorn is NOT from Chicago. He's yet another example of a mediot who moves here to take a job and then becomes a Cubs lover/Sox hater.

Imagine if John Kass or someone had written an anti-Cub article with the same tone as this one, in, say, September 2003, while the Cubs were in the midst of their historic run at the championship? Every Cub fan in the world would be trotting out the old stereotype that "Sox fans are more interested in seeing the Cubs lose than they are in seeing the Sox win". But thanks to the double standard in this town Zorn can write an unnecessarily harsh anti-Sox piece and get away with it, evidently with the full approval of the editors.
