Kevin Kennedy previews todays game on FOX

This one is decidedly a tale of two teams, one cruising toward a division title and the other getting to the point in the season where every game is important. At the outset, most would have thought that the Yankees would be the team cruising. Not this time. It's the White Sox, one of baseball's surprise teams. The ChiSox have let the A.L. Central all season, but are now in the throes of a mini-slump. So they've got to play through it and regain their edge for the playoffs. The Yankees have taken seven straight A.L. East titles but are now fighting to catch the arch-rival Red Sox in a season when they were expected to run away with the division

Michael Kay-- ~ Usually at this time of the year it's the yankees who are able to rest players and get healthy, setting up for the play-offs. This year the white sox find themselves in that position.

Kay usually wears rose colored glasses when it comes to NYY

not this year

Michael,
I have a very simple question: Do you think the Yankees will be in the playoffs this year and what is your reasoning behind your answer?
Greg Slivanik Naples, Fla.

KAY: Greg,
My gut feeling is they will not. But any baseball acumen that I have tells me they will outlast the A's to grab the wild card rather than winning the AL East and out-hitting the Red Sox. The reason my gut is saying no is in order for the Yankees to pass the A's and the Sox they have to play better than they have all season, and what would make you think they would all of a sudden do that? My brain tells me that they are simply a better overall team than the A's, but the A's torrid run has to end because even the best teams of all time don't play at this pace. The wild card might come down to the series in Oakland in two weeks.
