HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros have made a strong bid to lock up Billy Wagner for a while, but now the ball is in the closer's hands.

The Astros have made a three-year, $20 million offer to Wagner, the Houston Chronicle reported on Thursday. The left-handed Wagner, who tied a franchise record with 39 saves this season, is eligible for arbitration and can become a free agent after the 2002 season.

The Astros are making Wagner their No. 1 priority this offseason after already saying that they will not try to retain free agents Moises Alou and Billy Wagner.

"I'm shocked they came with an offer so soon," The 30-year-old Wagner told the Chronicle. "My agent (Bean Stringfellow) has been thinking about it more than I have. There's nothing I can really do."

Wagner is looking for a fourth year on the contract, which the club has been reluctant to give any pitcher over the past decade, the Chronicle reported. The Astros have not signed a pitcher to a guaranteed four-year deal since Doug Drabek and Greg Swindell each signed one in 1992.

Should Wagner accept the three-year deal, he would become one of baseball's highest-paid closers.

"It depends on what they want to do and how serious they are of working with me," Wagner told the Chronicle. Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker confirmed to the Chronicle that Bobby Barad, the agent for outfielder Lance Berkman, has contacted the club regarding a multi-year deal.

Berkman made $300,000 in 2001. In his first full season, Berkman hit .331 with 34 homers and 126 RBI.

You know, I'm a Braves fan (they're my "NL" team), but I was a bit sickened by the moolah they're going to be paying Smoltz. It's amazing how much money people are making for not that much actual real work.

Almost makes me wanna :gulp:

It would appear it's a matter of time. Question is, who will be closer apparent if they do pull the plug on 29 ?

If we listened to everything you said near the deadline last year the Sox would have no players.

That is the closer for the Barons (I forget his first name) Almonte. He set the AA record for saves last year if I am not mistaken.

Thanks West.
Found this on the Barons Web Site:
Edwin Almonte - Southern League Mid Season All-Star, AA-Association All-Star, Barons all-time single season and career saves leader, Southern League record holder for most consecutive saves and most saves in a single season, Southern League Year End All-Star

Hey, I made very thought out ideas on who to trade! Foulke, Singleton, Perry, Canseco, and Caballo. I think moving all of them last season woulda have made sense. Not trading Canseco blew my mind though, he has no future here and had a little value still. I am up in the air on Caballo though. I won't take back anything I said about trading the others way, and I still believe that would have been the right thing to do. Caballo is a tough choice because I really don't know what to expect from Rowand. If Aaron could handle the load, I'd deal Caballo in a second, but a certain manager wouldn't play certain players at the end of the season to find out...

Maybe true, but who wouldn't agree with at least half those names mentioned?

Kenny Williams.

Yeah, well, if I am disagreeing with a guy who mixed up the names Berry and Barry in his own trade then I don't mind not seeing eye to eye.

Thanks. I heard a lot about him, just never saw his face. He sounds unstoppable. Any chance he'll be ready next year? If he is, bu bye Foulke.
