This was the most nervous I have EVER been about a game (I am still kinda young, dont remember 93, and could't watch the 2000 playoff games on cable:angry:). This game was unbelievable. Rowand was amazing the whole series. He may have had only 1 or 2 hits in these games, but he saved probably 5 runs with his defense.

This might be the series that defines Rowand's career as he grows to become a superstar. If Rowand did this on the Cubs, not only would the first 25 min of the WGN News be devoted to it, but they would officially call this series "the Rowand Series".

Also, great to see Cotts get some revenge in the stadium. Or maybe he should get revenge on Jerry Manuel, instead.

I'm just saying that in the grand scheme of things, this is a meaningless game. Yeah, it's a nice win for team morale and to get more attention from the media, but it's not like this game won us a division or anything. We're basically in the playoffs already. The other A.L. teams should be more worried about facing the Sox in a short series. If they can get this same kind of pitching and defense as they did in the environment of Yankee Stadium, and if just one or two hitters get hot, the Sox can take anyone in a short series.

Any win against the Yankees is a sweet win.ESPECIALLY in New York.

All these loudmouth jackasses acting like they were going to sweep because they're the Yankees and they're going to the playoffs no matter what... etc., etc.

There was talk about how the White Sox are just a re-tread of the 2001 Mariners, how even "if" they get to the playoffs, they'll just get slaughtered by the Yankees in the ALCS...

I overheard all of this in the stands at the Stadium on Monday.

So yeah, this is a pretty sweet series win.

If somehow beating a team who is a couple of games over .500 means we're "for real," then so be it.

Again (and I should have known people would misread that), I'm talking about in the grand scheme of the season. We've all but locked up the division. I'm talking about what it is going to be like when the games start actually meaning the difference between continuing on in the quest for a World Series or going home. Right now, these games don't matter in that sense. Yes, it's nice to kick the Yankees ass and show that we can win in Yankee stadium in the regular season. My point was that this game didn't determine our fate like a playoff game would.

Wow our pitching and fielding was ridiculous this series. Rowand basically won the series for us with his defensive output, but you also gotta give credit to the pitching for knowing what ballpark they were in and pitching to the park. Garcia's performance today would not have worked well at US Cellular Field, but he got it done where he was, which is all that matters.

5 runs in 28 innings against the Yankees (and only 3 in the last 27)? That's amazing. This wasn't an important series, nor was it a a series in which the White Sox needed to prove themselves. But it was a statement. A statement that no one should be doubting this team.

The failure with RISP in the 4th and the overall failures with RISP lately has been frustrating, but I think it's just a slump and nothing to be overly concerned about in the long run.

This is what playoff baseball is going to be like and we proved again that we have what it takes to win those close, hard-fought games. It was a great series on both sides, very well played. And we took two of three on the road against a team that wanted it a lot more than we did--or needed it anyway. This doesn't mean we'll win in the playoffs, either. But neither does losing against the cubs or any other supposed "big" playoff-like series in which we struggled.

I don't know about you, but I thought Uribe was right on Rivera's hard stuff and I wasn't surprised he whacked one to the gap.

I'm just saying that in the grand scheme of things, this is a meaningless game. Yeah, it's a nice win for team morale and to get more attention from the media, but it's not like this game won us a division or anything. We're basically in the playoffs already. Now imagine when the playoffs start how jumping this place will be. West is going to need backup servers ready. :o:

There are so many sweet things included in this win today and winning/playing very well (pitching & defense) all series.

First I'll go with the series:
- Aaron showing off the speed, glove and fearlessness in CF and making it look easy.
- Duque and Contreras shutting down the Yankees after the Yankees all but gave up on both of them because of age, ability and inconsistency.
- The offense, getting timely runs. I know they sucked quite a bit, but the hits came at the right time and gave us JUST enough to win a couple games.
- The whole staff (starters and bullpen as a whole) pitched amazingly well this series and showed very good composure and focus on the hill in front of 50,000+ fans every game.

Now I'll go with today:
- Freddy was dealing. I didn't get to see the game (listening), but any time you can hold the Yankees to 1 run (and a run that shouldn't have been) your doing a quality, quality job.
- After ESPN (Harold Reynolds) basically giving Rivera Cy Young a few nights ago, the loss and 1st ER in over 3 months was great.
- Uribe and Pods coming back from a tough first (combined) 7 at-bats to win the game was clutch.
- Hermanson getting his 30 save and showing those ESPN fools that he is a real closer.
- And last - Cotts! Shaking off his Yankee Stadium ghosts left over from the Jerry Manuel 2003 start to get the W and a nice inning and 1/3 pitched.

This was a great baseball series for those who like seeing great pitching and spectacular defense. This IS White Sox baseball and they showed the Yankees how it's done.

I love the AP story's first paragraph:

NEW YORK -- Juan Uribe slid in under catcher Jorge Posada's tag to score a disputed run in the 10th inning, lifting the White Sox over the New York Yankees 2-1 Wednesday. Disputed? Maybe for about 10 seconds until the Umps told Torre they made the right call. It's not like the Yankees played the rest of the game under protest or there was even a lengthy argument after the call.

5 (1 Unearned) total runs scored by a powerful Yankee lineup, and we threw the Cubans at them back to back, with Freddy of course being lights out today...

Now that is impressive, and hopefully Buehrle and Garland prove to the entire East Coast this weekend WHY they are the aces of the best team's pitching staff, not to mention front runners for Cy Young....

We don't get WGN in Portland, Maine. My options were YES coverage on Extra Innings package and ESPN. After 2 nights of YES, it was an easy choice.

BTW, our ESPN coverage had Steve Stone, not Sutcliffe. And I have to say both ESPN and YES had very good things to say about the Sox. It was hilarious hearing the surprise in the YES men's voices (Bobby Murcer, Jim Kaat, and Michael Kay) as the Sox scrapped through the series w/ phenomenal pitching and defense: "Wow! That umpiring crew had a hell of a series as well. Hopefully, some of you will take off the tinfoil hat.

I agree. While Uribe did look safe on the replays, albeit just ever so barely, that is the type of play that can go the other way and often does. The throw beat him and Posada was blocking the plate just about flawlessly. I for one am VERY surprised that the call went our way and if ever there was a time to "stick it to the White Sox" as many claim the umpires have been doing on purpose, that was one. Kudos to Froemming(he was at home, right?) for that play.

Yeah that was a great call. Probably a rarity that the visiting team--or any team--gets that call. Especially with it being the go ahead run in extra innings. Uribe blasted right through Posada's foot and just barely beat the tag. You expect him to be called out if you're watching from a distance, but that ump was right there bearing down and he made the right call.

As much as I liked Garcia's final line, he's not going to go 8 IP with 0 ER pitching like he did today on a consistant basis. He was pitching behind in the count the whole game. Of his 104 pitches, only 58 were for strikes. He also gave up a lot of deep drives that US Cellular Field would not hold. This start doesnt convince me so much that he's out of his recent slump. He was doing some of the bad things that he was doing before and getting away with it. I guess this all boils down to how I think he will fare in the playoffs (because that's all that really matters now), so maybe the answer is to start him in Game 3 on the road.

Karno: That was Garcia's 7th outing he went 8+ innings. He also has a complete game, and has 7 games he's allowed 1 ER or less. This was the Yankees, with one of the best power lineups in baseball. If they hit it so it will go out, it'll go out. I'd chill out. Garcia is great this season, he's bad some bad starts, but has plenty of great ones to back them up.

I'll take a 3.64 ERA from a pitcher who starts often in U.S. Cellular Field anytime in the playoffs. This was a playoff atmosphere type game, and he definitely showed up.

He has a clear split of 2.81 ERA on the road and 5.01 at home and it's due entirely to the long ball (13 at the Cell and 6 on the road). Garcia proved today that he should start game three of ALDS after Buehrle and Garland in games one and two, which might be a pretty crucial game if we split at home. But I wouldn't take my chances on him at home in a short series. Outings like that in Oakland/New York/Boston (to a lesser extent in Boston) will work wonders, but that wont cut it at home. It's not that big of a problem as long as he in fact does start on the road as much as possible in the playoffs. It's all about putting your team in the best position to win.

I think I remember reading something to the effect that Ozzie switched the second half rotation to give Garcia as many road starts as possible (or something along those lines) so I think the coaching staff is aware of it.

Well, considering Garcia is going to start Game 3 on the road in any playoff series anyways (Buehrle, Garland), I don't see what the big deal is. Perhaps Garcia's bad games just happen to be at home. Not only does he have more HR's there, but twice as many BB's in 20 fewer innings. That is indicative of more than Garcia losing because of HR's at home. In any event, he's a great pitcher, and I have full confidence in him against any #3 in the league. Actually, in a playoff series I'd have confidence in him against any pitcher in the league. If he had two more solid outings to replace two crap outings against Seattle and in San Diego this season, he too would be mentioned as a Cy Young Candidate IMO.

Garcia is better than I thought he was when we got him. I wasn't that excited then, but I am now. He's been an awesome asset. Not trying to impersonalize him, but once he gets past the first inning, he is usually lights out. What a steal in retrospect!!!

I think a lot of Sox fans were unaware that most of Garcia's problems when he was playing in Seattle were the result of an inner ear problem that affected his balance. He had that corrected winter before last and has resorted pretty much to his old form.

That's right! I was not impressed by Garcia until last year... WOW. A loss for Seattle is our gain. Today's White Sox looks like yesterdays Yankees and vice versa.
Congrats Rowand, Garcia, Contreras, Konerko and the crew!
What a great early B-day present. This team really is impressive. Now go beat those BoSox!!! :supernana: I have never seen so many dancing bananas...
