View Full Version : Would you cry if Sox win the series?

I must admit I would probably cry during the playoffs (1st round) if it was an emotional 9th inning win or something. And I would prolly cry if they just advanced to the series. I think there was a time where I was losing a little bit of my Sox appeal. Don't get me wrong, I will always be a Sox fan but I was just losing a bit of my zest for baseball in general. I was just finding other interests and such. I definately don't feel that way this year.

I'd be too busy shouting and high fiving Mrs. Labrum to cry. After all: There's no crying in baseball!

Of course it'll be tears of joy as well as some Bacardi tears.

I would totally cry! I remember back in '93 (I was just 13 and a freshman in high school), I sat on my couch in tears during Game 6 of the ALCS, but those were tears of sadness. I'd much rather cry tears of joy! I already told my friends that I'll cry whenever the Sox win a playoff series. And if we win it all, I'll go to work with puffy eyes the next day from all the crying I'll do!

Sounds like me when I was 10 in '83. Landrum hit the homer in the 10th and I was trying to fight back the tears as my dad got up and walked outside. In 2000 my brother was visiting and we bought a case. The sink was full of beer bottles in just the 7th inning or so. My brother said he was going to bed. Keep in mind he is a big Whitesox fan too. I said, "WHAT" At this time it was tied. I just could not believe what he was saying. He must have knew something I didn't cause after the 9th it was all Seattle with the two bombs hit my Martinez and Olerud. hopefully this year will be different.

I informed my wife that a mythical whitesox world series championship would be a better day than the birth of any of my children.

She responded "Somehow, I'm not surprised."

Tears of joy, yes. . . I'm just afraid of what I'd do if they got into the WS and lost. In 2000, I was at the Game 1 loss. I came back to my dorm room, took a bat and smashed my wooden dresser, then threw a couple of pop cans against the wall until they exploded.

However, my Albert Belle phase has passed.

I'm not a big crier...in fact, almost every time I've cried in the past 15 years or so has been baseball-related.

I cried in 1993 when Joe Carter's home run sailed into the cool October night as I sat there in the upper reaches of the SkyDome.

I cried in 1996 when the Yankees (the team I grew up with, sorry) won the WS propelled by guys like O'Neill and Brosius, and some kid named Jeter.

I cried at Comiskey Park at the first Sox game after 9/11 hearing God Bless America.

I cried when I walked into Busch Stadium this past summer for the first and last time.

So yeah, if the Sox win the WS, I'll be a blubbering fool....but they'll be tears of joy. I've never ever invested as much time, emotions and money as I have in this bunch the past few years, and for them to win it all would be just amazing.

I'd cry, then I'd cash the betting slip I put on the Sox to win the World Series at 40-1.

If the Sox win the World Series I'll cry like a little girl with a skinned knee. Under no circumstances would I ever cry over a lost game or series though.

No Tears for me, but I told my Girlfriend that I recently had a vision that if the Sox win the WS, I am going to grab my White Sox flag off the house and run down the middle of Western Avenue in my underwear. So if it happens, I feel I must fulfill the prophecy.

Then I am going to Vegas to cash my future be to the Sox to Win the AL at 20-1 & the WS at 40-1, maybe I'll bump into you in the sportsbook.

I remember how I reacted when they were eliminated in '83. Went to the Jewel and pushed a shopping cart around with tears streaming down my face. This was on the NW side, so everybody thought I was nuts. Based on this, I'm pretty sure I'll go hysterical when they win.

Then I'll head to Reno to collect on my 30-1 slip!

I will weep. I've thought a lot recently about how awesome it would be to see the dogpile at the Cell and the fireworks that would have to last 10 minutes straight ... makes me tear up, just the thought of it. How deafening the roar of the crowd will be.

And the party that will follow? Wow. I'm going swimming in Buckingham Fountain at some point that night, if they haven't drained it by then. And ain't no way I'm going to work for at least three days. :)

I'd be ecstatic, and I know I'd probably do something really, really stupid. As to what, only time will tell.

EDIT: I know what I'd do now. I'd get white, black, and silver spray paint and go to the homes of every Flubs fan I know. Upon waking up in the morning they would each find on their lawns a huge message saying '2005 World Champion Chicago White Sox - Choke on it!' They'd probably find a drunk idiot sleeping in their bushes too, but oh well.

I've been working at my job for just over a year thus earning vacation time.
I will take a day off in October (12-15?) to be present for the birth of my nephew, Matthew Nicholas Riordan in Antioch- Remember the name, he'll be the 2027 opening day starting short stop for the White Sox.
Then depending on how the playoffs work out, I will be taking time off after wins in the ALDS, ALCS and WS.
And yes I will cry. I'll stay sober during the games so I can't have clear memories then get friggin loaded afterwards.

Being an emotional person to begin with (hey, thanks, Ma), I get choked up watching the highlights on the scoreboard of Sox greats from the past and beloved old Comiskey. If the Sox make the Series or God willing, win the damn thing, I just know I'll be crying like I was on the days when my nephews and niece were born.

Since I work near the ballpark, I drive past it every day. In fact, on my first day at my job five years ago, I stopped at the site of home plate at the old Comiskey and said a prayer.

Right or wrong, baseball and being a Sox fan means that much to me.

THIS IS OUR YEAR!!

First of all, I am glad this poll who voted how. That way I can contact all of us who voted running around the block naked for a WS WS ("White Sox World Series) party.

I bawled, bawled!, like a baby after Landrum did his thing in '83. I was screaming and yelling and cursing at the television as they showed the Orioles popping the champaign..

I will be beside myself when they win it all this year. I will be in the face of Flub fans for the remainder of Time after that.

I will TIVO all post season games and then record the game on DVD's so that I will be able re-live the magic. I have Opening Day and McCarthy's first game on my TIVO so I will have those, too for eternity.

For the road World Series games, we should organize WSI parties to watch the games. Otherwise, we could get tickets for the road games at the Urinal. According to Carol Slezak, the Flubs are still in it as long as they are not mathematically eliminated.

The day after the Red Sox won, I cried twice.

First was when I heard a station ID "You are listening to the 50,000 watt home of the World Champion Boston Red Sox"

later at a cemetery when I planed a World Champion pennant on my Dad's grave.

I wasn't alone

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2004/10/28/victory_transforms_a_regions_idenitity/
Workers at Mount Auburn Cemetery said yesterday they began to see tiny Red Sox flags blossom near some headstones at the historic graveyard in Cambridge.

''This is a place where the living and the dead meet," said Janet Heywood, a Mount Auburn vice president. ''It seems appropriate that people would want to invoke the spirit of their ancestors and let them know what's happening with the Red Sox."

I said this last October and I'll say it again, I hope someday you all will feel like I did when Boston won it all.

Last night I got teary eyed again when looking at a new childrens book about the Red Sox. It followed a family thru 86 years of watching their team and the drawing that nailed me was of a husband and wife in bed at 1:15 AM watching Ortiz win Game 4 and there was more baseball to be played.

I don't know if this ever ran in Chicago but Nike had an ad last fall that also showed 86 years of fans cheering and hoping, and that got me every time.

The ad ( and change Fenway to Comiskey and it is you )

One wonders how one will react if the White Sox actually did win the world series.
I have trouble even typing that phrase.
Its like wondering how i would like space travel,or how i would spend the winning lottery ticket.
Its just too much to fathom at this time.
I'm not sure if a will cry or not but i'm sure that i will have a combined nervous breakdown/heart attack followed by my brain exploding out of my head and flying across the room.
