Tourists Visit For Chicago Baseball
by <insert any Trib columnist here>
In late 2004, Otto Van Nostrom and Jurgen Vandelay of Denmark decided they wanted to visit America to see some baseball. Both men had recently discovered the game and wanted to see it first hand. They decided Chicago was a great choice since they heard the city was wonderful and they would have the chance to see games in both leagues. They contacted the Tribune and asked if we could provide a guide to help them enjoy the experience. We happily obliged and sent one of our best sports people to help them get the most out of their trip.
We picked up Otto and Jurgen at the airport and headed to beautiful Wrigley field for a Cubs game on a gorgeous summer afternoon. As the cab neared the park both men became very anxious and excited. The streets around the park swelled with Cub fans making their way to some of the city's best bars for pre-game festivities. Some of the more eager fans slammed their fists on the hood of the cab to welcome our visitors to the city. One young fan yelled loudly into the window and our cab driver yelled something back to him. Otto and Jurgen were giddy to be witnessing such great Chicago baseball passion first had. "This is fantastic", said Otto. Otto also noticed a vendor selling shirts that were poking fun at one of the Cubs' rivals. We told him that this also demonstrated the passion of the Cub fans. "This is truly breathtaking", said Jurgen.
We decided to leave the cab since the driver had gotten out to get into a heated discussion about the Cubs with the young fan who had yelled in the window. We would walk the short eight blocks to one of the better drinking establishments in the clean, friendly neighborhood around the park. On the way, Jurgen purchased one of the shirts from the vendors we had seen. The shirt had taken one of the logos of an American League team, and gave it a humorous twist. Jurgen put it on immediately and as we walked down the street he received many cheers from the Cub fans. Otto and Jurgen were awed by the energy and passion of the wonderful Cub fans who shouted, screamed and ran in the street to yell at people in passing cars. Inside the bar we enjoyed drinks with some of the Cubbie faithfull. Their youthful energy enabled them to drink three drinks to our one and they downed each beer with the vigor of champions. The t.v. in the bar was televising the game, and we noticed it was the bottom of the first inning, so we decided it was time to head over to the game. "I can't wait to see baseball", chirped Jurgen.
We walked to the park and entered the gates to the bleachers. Our visitors from Europe needed to experience Chicago baseball at its best, so we set them up with seats amongst the bleacher bums of beautiful Wrigley Field. We explained to Otto and Jurgen that these seats were the best in all of baseball. After some traffic on the concourse we made it up to the seats in time for the bottom of the third inning to start. We asked a few of the faithfull fans what had happened in the game up to this point. Most were so caught up in the heavenly experience of the bleachers that they couldn't answer us. One fine gentleman was able to tell us that someone from the Cubs had scored and he thought the Cubs might be leading 1-0. Otto and Jurgen were awestruck. Otto stood wide-eyed as he said, "I have never been to a place so beautiful in all my life. I have never seen such wonderfull people anywhere."
We headed over to find a beer vendor and get some peanuts. After a few innings of showing our guests the fantastic rooftop seats beyond Waveland avenue, the charming and nostalgic scoreboard and the beautiful ivy growing on Wrigley's sacred brick walls, we headed down to relieve ourselves from the beers we had consumed. Otto and Jurgen were again awestruck at the sheer volume of devoted fans waiting to use the men's room.
We made it back to our seats just in time for the seventh inning stretch. We asked some of the fans around us who was singing today and one lovely young lady named Amber told us she thought it was "that guy from the t.v. show with Rob Lowe". She went on to tell us how much she loved Rob Lowe and soon Otto and Jurgen were quite smitten with her. Our guests enjoyed discussing some great baseball with Amber covering such topics as the best bar to meet some of the players after the game, Mark Grace being the cutest Cubs player of all time, and the great Cubs dynasty that has been in place since 1998.
After chatting for an inning or so with Amber, we noticed most of the place emptying out. Otto and Jurgen became nervous that we would miss out on a good spot at one of the fine bars near the park, so we decided to leave also. Amber told us that she saw a few players from the other team running the bases and figured the Cubs may be losing. She told us how much she still loved them however. We headed out and over to Murphy's. Otto and Jurgen were again awestruck as they saw the Cubbie faithfull heading out into the streets and again making as much of a spectacle of themselves as possible. We had a few cold ones at Murphy's and hailed a cab to head on down to the southside.

On the way down we explained to our guests that we could not stop anywhere else since most of the area around whatever they are calling Comiskey park these days is strictly parking lots, railroad tracks and old warehouses. Jurgen was sad that we could no longer revel with the wonderfull fans and he mentioned that the name of the park that the southside team played in confused him a bit. The cab pulled up to the front of the park on 35th street and Otto and Jurgen were a bit nervous about some of the people walking around outside. We told them to relax and waited until a police officer came walking past and then exited the cab. We quickly ran to the gate to get in the park before anything could happen.
While walking up the numerous ramps to the sections of upper deck that stretched high into the sky, Otto noticed many of the fans wearing anti-Cubs shirts with obscene words. We explained to him that all Sox fans were jealous of the Cubs' success and so each one wore one of these shirts. Jurgen became very upset and wanted to leave. Some of the fans noticed his humorous shirt and began to hurl insults. We convinced him to stay and assured him we would protect him from the fans. After the long climb to our seats high in the upper deck, our guests were extremely tired. "Can we leave", begged Otto. We sat down and Otto's view was obstructed by one of the many poles that were recently installed during the numerous renovations to the sterile park. Jurgen was confused why there were so many more people on the field here than at beautiful Wrigley field and we explained to him that these were security guards that had to stay on the field at all times to protect the players from the many fans who try to run onto the field during games. Jurgen said he did not understand why there was so much hostility in this place and compared it to a trip he took to East Berlin as a boy.
As the game went on, the Sox scored some runs and the large unsightly scoreboard made our guests nervous. They said that the sounds of all the fireworks were scaring them. We offered to take them down for some food and drinks, but both were too scared to leave their seats. Most of the fans around us were so busy watching the game that none would strike up a conversation with the men like the lovely Amber had done at beautiful Wrigley Field. There were not that many to talk to anyway since our section had at least ten to fifteen empty seats. In fact, Otto pointed out that most of the secions had a few empty seats. We explained to him that the Sox did not have as many fans as the Cubs and the park was almost never full. Otto and Jurgen were confused as to when to leave since all the fans in the seats stayed put right up until the last out. "What is going on here", cried Jurgen. The cheering for the Sox win frightened them along with the additional fireworks and now we were stuck walking down the numerous ramps with many of the rowdy fans. Our guests stayed very close to us and remained quiet during the entire walk out of the park. Jurgen was in fear that some of the rowdier fans like the Ligues and Eric Dybas may attack him in the same manner they had attacked people on the field in the past.
When we finally made it down from the steep upper deck sections to the street, we tried to find a cab a quickly as possible. We advised Otto and Jurgen to stay very close and not to wander into the dangerous neighborhood around the park. We told them about the beatings that had taken place in a local bar and a few blocks from the park. They were nervous that we would not get a cab since most drivers would be afraid to work in such and area. We finally caught a ride and were able to escape.

We took Otto and Jurgen to their hotel and relived the beautiful day they enjoyed at beautiful Wrigley Field. Both said they were now life-long Cub fans and planned on buying lots of Cubs merchandise the following day before they headed home to Denmark. Both men couldn't wait to share their Chicago baseball experience with their friends and family back home. Otto said he was going to tell everyone about the beauty of Wrigley Field and the passion of the Cub fans. He was proud to be a fan of a team with such great history and tradition that has enjoyed years of success.

In late 2004, ...

You know what the Trib would say to you....YOU'RE HIRED!!!

Your mock article brings up things I see all the time in the press:

1) a double standard where Cub fans being rowdy = passionate and great fans but Sox fans being rowdy = hateful and obnoxious and terrible fans.
2) Cub fans are lauded for hating the Sox and never supporting them. Sox fans are criticized for being Cub haters and not supporting the Cubs when they make a rare postseason appearance.
3) this crazy notion that the Cubs have this great history and tradition when they've been losers for the last 60 years and in vast majority of those seasons, they have been under .500.
4) constant references to Ligue and "sea of parking lots" when referring to the Sox. Only good things to say about drunken fans at Wrigley.

This mock article was absolutely brilliant. If I have one critique, it is that you
didn't mention the long-stsnding Wrigley tradition of trashing the field with
garbage; or the sociopaths who think that wanting to murder Steve Bartman
means that they are "passionate, bleed Cubbie blue" fans. Other than that, it

Can someone Photoshop Podsednik's face on Truman's face? That would be great!

Nah, it's perfect just like it is. The historical reference with Truman's face is what drives home the point: the hired shills at the Cubune have always denied their bias, but the most famous headline their paper ever wrote was the MANIFEST EXAMPLE of just how bad their bias truly was and still is.

Next time Knue, McGrath, or Lipinski from the Cubune claim their motives are pure as the driven snow (or one of their countless defenders on this board makes another half-baked attempt to refute another allegation of bias), we'll have Truman's smiling face to remind us all of one simple fact: Same ****, different day.

Wait... what REALLY happened? I only got to see the game via the "gameday" thing from the whitesox.com website (I was at work).[/QUOTE]

A kid about 17 or 18 fell from the upper deck on to the netting behind home plate during the Yankees at-bat in the 6th or 7th.

Politte gave up a leadoff homer in the bottom of the 9th to A-rod before being pulled for Marte.

Marte made it interesting (men on 1st and 3rd) before Bernie Williams lined out to Geoff Blum, who was playing first base for PK. If Blum wasn't guarding the line, it would have been an easy double, and the Yanks would have at least tied it, blowing a masterful game by Jose Contreras.

That's all.

BLACKHAWKS REACH RECORD SEASON TICKET SALES

White Sox no longer fit model of losing, should be disowned by city

This actually doesn't model how our media is. The Blackhawks, sadly, get much less coverage than do the Sox. It's sad how low hockey has sunk in this city. Hopefully this year will turn things around for the organIzation.

Entire Red Sox Roster wants to be a Cub!

"Maddux Sucks," Spray-painted on Wrigley. Buerhle, Ozzie, and Satan suspected.

Cubs expected to go on tear after tiny losing streak. Widl Card easily in reach?

Yeah, if I remember correctly, the media didn't cover a single Hawks game all last season. I think this is totally unfair to the Hawks and to the NHL! If I were them, I'd blame the media for not covering them last season!
