At what point do we start an official MAGIC NUMBER thread? While there are still two months to go in the season, barring a massive collapse, no one is going to catch the Sox in the Central.

Based on that, I vote for an offical thread when the Magic number hits 25, as we might as well get the most fun out of this season as we can, because as we all know, once the playoffs start it is a clean slate and regular season records mean nothing!!!

Any thoughts?

GO Sox !!

The Daily Herald has started their countdown of the Sox Magic Number. But I think we should start September 1.

I think a race has to be close for an interesting magic number count. This year's count will be pretty anticlimactic imo.

our magic number to eliminate KC is 17...should be the first team mathematically eliminated.

Let's wait until after that brutal 17 day stretch of games in August.

I'm covering all bases with my current signature.
I've also got a spreadsheet that calculates every team's magic (or tragic) number.

At 43, the Sox are by far the team closest to clinching a playoff spot. St. Louis is second at 49.
The Flubs' tragic numbers are 45 for the division and 54 for the wild card. Go Astros!

Is that their number to be out of the WC race too?

Kansas City is at 27 for the division and 37 for the wild card:

(Sox' games remaining + 1) - (KC losses - Sox' losses) = elimination number
(58+1) - (67-35) =
59 - 32 = 27

(A's games remaining + 1) - (KC losses - A's losses) = elimination number
(57+1) - (67-46) =
58 - 31 = 37

Brutal? :?:

I find it funny that some fans like you, Lip, find it necessary to call these games 'brutal'. *** are you talking about? Why should the White Sox be afraid to be playing the Yankees, Red Sox, and the Twins??? If anything, I guarantee you those teams aren't looking forward to playing us.

I think I'm gonna have to agree with Lip on this one. Although I'm not as afraid as I was a month or so ago but I can see us getting way too excited about this stretch and not having much left after.

Right, because the White Sox win their division so often it's getting old and boring.

How about magic numbers to clinch best regular season record in MLB? Right now it's 55 over the St. Louis Cardinals.

I'm sure everybody out there knows that this is just in fun and I'd rather have a championship. BTW, record with me in attendanc: 3-0 (all at Coors Field.)

So they have about as much of a chance at making the playoffs as Lloyd has ending up with Mary.

"So you're telling me there's a chance! Yea!"

I agree with half and completely disagree with half of what you have to say. We don't have anything to fear from the Yankees, Red Sox, and Twins, yes, but it is still brutal because these are still 3 of the better teams in the AL. I'm not terrified of this stretch because I'm sure we can pull out at least .500, probably better but it is still a time when alot can go wrong - someone can get hurt playing 110% in these emotional games or we could string together a few slugfests that kill our bullpen.

It should be fun and its not as scary as it seemed to beginning of the season when it looked like it would land smack dab in the middle of a pennant race but its still something I'd like to get over with.

NS:

The Sox don't have to be 'afraid' of these teams at all. However you'll admit this isn't say Toronto, Kansas City and Seattle no?

The division (barring a melt down of Biblical proportions) is won but what shape wiill the team be in after this stretch? Physical shape. This is a very tough stretch physically against some good teams (you'll admit that no?)

That's all I meant. Relax.

I'm not scared at all. I consider us winning the division a foregone conclusion. The Sox have 58 games left. If we go 29-29 that means that Cleveland would have to go 43-13 and Minnesota would have to go 44-13 just to catch us. I highly doubt that that's gonna happen. Our longest losing streak of the year has been what, 3 games? We went through our worst stretch of the season against DET, BOS and KC where we went 4-6 and still picked up ground against the teams chasing us. I'm looking forward to October 4th, but will continue to enjoy this historic season as I have since opening day.
