The Chicago White Sox (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/chw/) released reliever Shingo Takatsu (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7255/) on Monday, one season after he finished second in AL Rookie of the Year balloting.

did he ask for this so he could go home?

poor guy.

Wow what a rough couple months for Shingo....

I wish he was 2004 Shingo so he could be a part of what's happening....

Wish him the best :gulp:

Damn, I really liked him and was hoping he could regain his control.

Now what do I do with my Mr. Zero shirt?

Too bad for Shingo. From that horrible spring last year to that unbelievable season in 2004 to a disapointment in 2005. I wish you luck Shingo.

This is best for the team however. At least we realized that he lost it before it really hurt us.

That sucks for Shingo, cool guy... wish he coulda gotten it together.

Good for the team. He stunk this year.

I was hoping he could get it together at charlotte and be back for October. I got a shingo shirt for $10 at the game last week.

Geez.

I honestly didn't think Shingo was all that awful this year.

Anyway, I tip my cap to him for playing well for a while here.

Besides being fun to watch last year I don't think we would have signed Tadahito without his help this past off-season. I wish you the best Shingo! Here's to Shingo! :gulp:

I'm shocked. I have to think this was at his request so he could retire. He could have been useful in September.

Man I am so sad to see him go. He was amazing last year! And he's the career Japanese saves leader, he obviously has the ability. I hope he lands on his feet.

No reason he can't go back home and play.... and I hope he does, and does well.

Maybe we'll pick him up on his second go-round?

Rick Ankiel comes to mind too.

His was dragged out over years. Bobby Hill and Tuffy Rhoades are not very similar to Shingo. Shingo finished second in the ROY balloting, and less than 100 games later, he is out of baseball entirely (it seems). I cannot think of anyone with that level of success who fell off the face of the baseball earth so quick.

Are you serious?

5.96 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, .586 SLG% against, .359 OBP against, .945 OPS against (which basically means every batter he faced was similar to a mid-90's Frank Thomas :o: ) and yes, Vizcaino's numbers are much better than Takatsu's.

On the Sox site, official release of Shingo.

Kinda bums me out - I was hoping he'd turn it around and have a chance at our playoff roster. Any idea what the advantage was of letting him go vs. letting him pitch in Charlotte?

Maybe he really didn't want to report? Maybe he wanted to go back to Japan?

Just a thought.

It surprises me that he never got picked up by anyone in the NL who has pitching problems. The NL hasn't seen this guy and he would be useful.

Mark Fidrych. Almost two thirds of his wins and 80 percent of his shutouts were pitched in his ROY season, 1976. He pitched 250 innings that year, and less than 500 innings during his five-year career. Now he's just some guy who talked to the baseball.

If Kerry Wood weren't pitching for such a loveable team, people would put him on that list, too.

By giving him his unconditional release, that means they have to pay him his entire 2005 contract, correct?

Shingo earned his money. Best wishes to him. He seems like a great guy.

I'll never forget the excitement last year when Shingo would come out of the pen.

I've never seen anything like it. I think the only thing right now that can compare is the Gagne "game over" stuff. It was incredible.

I wish him only the best and I'm pretty sad he won't be around come september..

Why was Shingo released? The Sun-Times gives us the answer today.

After failing to show up to Class AAA Charlotte this week, reliever Shingo Takatsu was put on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

Maybe he got lost on the way to the ballpark. It's hard reading street signs when you don't speak English.

Thank you, I read that also and was waiting for someone to point it out. I don't know what the circumstances were but not showing up for AAA assignment is NOT COOL.

What does that mean "after failing to show up"? He just blew it off, and that's that? Or did they know he wouldn't be coming?

And if not, then where does he go now? Is he done with MLB here?

Well, just think about this for a second. If you were him would you really want to show up for AAA? You're in your mid-thirties, and you came to this country to play in the majors. When the idea of having to go to the minors comes up, wouldn't that horribly damage one's pride? I would go back home and go back into the Japanese League and get down and pitch. Show them who's boss.

That would be what I'm thinking he's thinking.

That would be what I'm thinking he's thinking.

It also makes him more able to find a new major league job. If a team claimed him off of waivers, they'd have to pay the rest of his $2.5mil. Now he can come in for the minimum and still collect from the Sox.

G4L13's dead on. He'll want to catch on here or go back home. No bus trips for Shingo with 20-yr olds. Especially given that he's still not great at english, I can imagine how that prospect would be pretty daunting.

From the Tribune:

Williams stressed reliever Shingo Takatsu was released at his request after being optioned to Triple-A Charlotte.

"We couldn't find a trade and didn't want to hold him up," Williams said.

"Ken Williams explained before last night's game that we deferred to Shingo as to what he wanted to do, and he preferred we release him (so that hopefully he can catch on with another team) as opposed to heading to Class AAA Charlotte. Shingo is a true class act, and Kenny really wanted to make sure we took care of him."

Reaction of Iguchi from a Tribune thing online where he talks about the transition to the American game.

Shingo (Former Sox relief pitcher Shingo Takatsu) was always a help to me from when I first got here. I'm upset that he's gone now. We had a good relationship. I'm sad, but that's the way the world turns.
