View Full Version : White Sox acquire Geoff Blum?

Multiple people on the Padres board at ESPN are saying they just heard on the radio that we acquired Blum for 2 minor leaguers.

http://forums.espn.go.com/espn/forum?forumID=534&byThread=true&start=0

While this isn't the best source for information, I doubt anyone would be making up Geoff Blum rumors. Supposedly the Padres made this trade to make room for Miguel Olivo, whom they just acquired from Seattle.

Did they need a spark down in Charlotte or something?

Well, at least now we know we have a backup 3B. I'm sure this doesn't affect a Huff deal, it would just ensure that he wouldn't have to play 3B.

Good going, KW.

a low salary backup infielder... not a bad pickup if it is indeed true.

The thing is, this guy walks a lot... his BA looks bad, but he gets on base. Solid fielder as well.

"Blum brings absolutley nothing to the table. he is completley worthless. whenever he gets the ball he holds it. just watch you will get pissed when you see this. he always gets a ground ball and doesnt throw it even though the guy would get out. blum is also a ****ty hitter. so its a great trade for the padres because blum sucks so hard and he is the worst player in baseball."

I guess Willie has some competition for the coveted 'worst player on the team' award. Unless Willie is getting sent down to make this trade.

Info on Blum...his lack of production in the AL is kind of scary, but this is all just info. We don't even know if he's been traded!
2004 Season

The Devil Rays acquired Geoff Blum from Houston thinking that he was a utility infielder who was only an opportunity away from becoming an everyday third baseman. Instead, he struggled from the start of spring training, never made the adjustment to the AL, and went on to have the worst season of his pro career (he hit .215).

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense

Blum's strength had been consistency. But he was so lost at the left side of the plate and his mechanics were so off that he actually hit much better righthanded in 2004. The more he struggled, the more frustrated he got and the more often he got himself out chasing bad pitches. Blum has smooth hands and moves well enough for a big guy that he can still be an asset defensively, though he looks more comfortable at third than second, shortstop or in the outfield. While Blum isn't fast, he is a solid baserunner.

2005 Outlook

The Rays weren't going to pay Blum in excess of $1 million to be a backup again, so he headed back to the National League by signing a one-year deal with San Diego. He will assume the role of a versatile and valuable utilityman.

I didn't mean it to read like Tampa would want him, just like something we would want to do if we were getting Huff. We'd probably (if this rumor is true) want Blum so we could have a decent defensive option at 3B and put Huff as the DH/1B replacement. I don't know though, just speculating, because that's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Geoff Blum? Geoff Blum? Geez, this better not be the only thing we do. If it's between Willie and Blum, I think I'd take Willie. Oh well, at least Blum can play 3B. I just hope this isn't an indication that the Huff thing is off.

Assuming for the moment that this isn't our only move, and it's just a small move that starts off our trading, I guess I like it. Blum is versatile enough to play any infield position and while his overall numbers are awful now, he did pretty well for the Padres early on. He's a useful utility man. I'm assuming we gave up nothing of any importance...

Thinking out loud... if KW has managed to find a taker for Willie, then doesn't he need to find a 2B/SS/3B type for the roster to hang out with Pablo on the bench?

I'd much rather have Mackoviak, but not if the price was significantly higher.

But the price for Blum had better not be one of the AA outfielders.

Passable, defensive versatility is the key characteristic you need in a 25th man.
For all practical purposes, Harris is only a second baseman. And a poor one at that. The shortstop experiment was abandoned. Centerfield -- no thanks. Since Harris isn't versatile, they need to carry guys like Pablo, Timo & Gload. I think Pablo is a keeper as he's reasonably versatile. But the real value in a guy like Blum is that you can send down both Harris & either Gload or Timo. The free roster spot gets used when we get Baez & Huff for minor league prospects.

Um, this thread is going on 4 pages, and our sole source of information remains a Padres fan message board?

And the Padres announcers shortly after their game.

Um, this thread is going on 4 pages, and our sole source of information remains a Padres fan message board? See me when there's an official release by the Sox...

Well, FWIW, this was actually reported on a radio station in San Diego. It's possible they were just waiting for morning to submit the deal to the commissioner's office and confirm the deal.

It makes sense for both sides, certainly. The Sox could use a good utility man who can backup at 3B. Blum is expendable from the Padres perspective as Damian Jackson is now their utility man. They're only carrying 11 pitchers, and they could use another pitcher. This trade would open up a spot for them to bring in another pitcher, unless we're trading them a pitcher (Adkins, Shingo, something like that).

I did hear it personally on the Padres' radio postgame show. The host did say however that nothing was official. We've seen that agreed deals can easily be nixed, such thing has already happened this weekend with the Larry Bigbie to the Red Sox deal yesterday. I'm sure the White Sox aren't in any hurry to announce this trade on a Sunday morning, if it is indeed happening. I should really get to bed soon...:wired:

IF this is true, it could be a preliminary move to put a package together for a bigger move.

This was the same line uttered by Homer Simpson in the
"Mr.Plow" episode after his first cable tv commercial ( for his new snow
plow service)ran at 3 AM.After a long silence,he then said:
"The waiting game sucks.Let's play 'Hungry Hungry Hippos".:D: :D:

I agree with Homer.I know it's necessary, but the wating game sucks.

P.S.-for those concerned,"Mr Plow" was put out of business by
his competitor and best friend Barney,"The Plow King".
He got Linda Ronstadt to sing his commercial jingle.:D: :D:

Senior Plow no es macho es solamente un borracho.:D:

While I don't share the same disgust with Willie--I think he's shaped up his attitude this year and has done everything the team has asked of him without complaint--that's a comical post.

Good job :)

Well, he may have tried to to do everything...but rarely executes.

He gives quality at bats and has a goal of getting on base, and it's comforting to know that his legs are on the bench for pinch running duties.

Blum, a well liked former Devilray, may have been picked up as trade bate for another deal and KW wants to keep it quiet until all the pieces are in place. Probably at the deadline.:dtroll:

Ozuna or Timo can just as easily pinch run for Willie. Timo may not be as fast as Harris, but he is more knowledgeable on the paths.

No.
Blum is a 32-year old utility infielder who had his worst year (.215) in the AL with the Devil Rays. There is no way that a)TB will trade a veteran for an even older veteran b)TB would want a utility infielder c)just no.

Either that or the asking prices have just been way too high. I'm confident that KW isn't "content" with just making the playoffs, no matter what happens today.

Still a couple hours left though... let's see what happens.

I 100% disagree with this statement. Kenny might be making another move, but even if he doesn't this is going to be the scariest AL team in the playoffs.

I say this because Frank is done. Who is gonna replace that? Huff would be an ideal choice. Just frustration on my part though.

The D-Rays come off as idiots, but they're the people that raped the Mets last year, getting Kazmir for Victor Zambrano. That just encourages them to ask for something ridiculous for Huff this year.

Huff is no Frank Thomas either. It'll probably be a long time before the Sox find a HOFer to take Frank's place. Are the Brewers out of it yet? Can we trade back for CLee to DH?
