So far, the Twins have already tasted that sour truth with their lone acquisition of the trade season, second baseman Bret Boone, who's hitting just .195 since the July 11 trade with eight singles in 10 games.
Ryan was reluctant to discuss Boone's status, but the low-risk pickup from the Seattle Mariners could be gone by the time the team returns home from the East Coast trip on Monday if his fortunes don't turn quickly.
"Every day is an evaluation process. We need production,'' Ryan said. "Bret Boone's no different than a lot of other guys.''
Boone had a nearly two-week layoff before suiting up for the Twins, so the team has cut him some slack. So judge him starting with Detroit series (four singles, 16 at-bats, at least three misplays in the field).
