View Full Version : A few ideas to bring in some Free agents

Reisndorf has said he won't open his wallet again this offseason (surprise, surprise), so here is a few REALISTIC ideas to save the Sox some money to bring in some free agents with.

Let it be known we have already done one of my cost saving thoughts by releasing Herbert and Keeping Leifer in his role. One of my other thoughts, keeping Ramirez and trading Singleton is now very unlikely. That being said.

1.Liu Rodriguez over Tony Graffanino-Liu is cheaper and from his 2001 stast, probably better. Tony has his areas where he accels, but Liu can play second and SS better than Tony (liefer can play third), and Liu put up some pretty impressive batting statistics in AAA. I think Liu is a six year minor league FA so he would have to be resigned. Liu is also 3 years younger than Tony.

2.No more "lefty Specialists"-Embree and Pulsipher were expensive and horrid. While I like Embree's stuff, his control just wasn't there. Remember there are a million Wunshc's out there, we can probably steal a few from the Jays, and we still have the original.

3.Resign Bill Simas-his price will never be cheaper since he is coming off of surgery and we all saw how much we couldv've used him this year to empty the gas can.

4.One SS per season-This may be the biggest point, we are paying good money to 2 good SS. Both of them struggle in areas while standing out in others. We need to trade one so they both aren't worrying about who is starting the next day. That had to affect both of their performances last season in a negative way. My choice, is Jose, he covers a lot of ground, a strong arm (though erratic), is an offensive juggernat, and a team leader. He may make errors, but he makes a lot of thse on balls Royce wouldn't get to. Royce is a good defensive SS but he dosen't have the power or the leadership skills Jose has.

5.Don't trade the Kids-Why trade Konerko or Lee, there young superstars on the verge of busting out. I love Canseco in a Sox uniform, but not if it causes Carlos to wear an Orioles uniform. Both of these guys are cheap and going to be megastars in teh majors very soon. Trading them know would be unthinkable. We know what we get with Canseco, yes its good, but With the young guys, the sky is the limit.

These are the five easiest ways to slim down teh payroll to free up some cash for some free agents. We don't have many holes to plug. We took a major step towards this direction also by not bringing back Baines and paying him $100,000 dollars per hit over the course of a season.

I agree, unless we get something unbelieveable for Konerko or C-Lee, we need to hang on to them. I remember a few weeks ago there was some talk of Carlos to Anaheim for Ramon Ortiz. I like Ortiz a lot, but I'd need someone more proven than him if I was to deal away a kid with as much "upside" as Carlos Lee.

Liu is already gone, the Sox didn't re-sign before Nov. 19th.

Simas is as good as gone with the signing of Ryan Kohlmeier, the salad specialist,he comes cheaper than Simas.

I hope beyond all hope that the Sox deal Royce for whatever,at this point I would take two bags of used baseballs,a broken fungo bat,and a batboy to be named later, whatever it takes to get him out of town is OK with me.

But then again what the hell do I know?

LOL!
I can just see the headlines-

Royce Clayton traded to Cubs for 25 year old assistant clubhouse attendant, new tape with a new recording of the YMCA (ours was getting kinda old), and a copy of today's Cubune.

:KW
"The newspaper was the sticking point, but it was a dealbreaker. I said I need something to read on the crapper, I told them Royce's career was in the crapper, they made the deal."

Let the record show the Sox got him off waivers. I really don't think he will make the team, I think he'll be in Charlotte to start the year. Simas is gone no doubt because your guy Rocky Biddle will start the year in the pen.

Don't forget about Kenny's Antoinio Osuna. You know, the guy who says he's 28, but don't look a day under 38. That's going to be the set-up guy next year. A favorite of Kw it seems.

What can Lee do for the Sox beside clutter up the outfield with bad defense? Then Manuel might think too much and get confused again. I think the signing of Simmons was to make a move at improving the outfield overall. IMO I think Simmons will be the 4th outfielder while Rowand, Singleton, and Maggs are starting. That's one hell of an improvment defensivly .

Nobody seemed to give a crap about Lee's "bad defense" when the Sox were winning 95 games in 2000. You need offense just as much as defense.

As far as I'm concerned, pitching and defense and timly hits win championships. Not 9 runs a game while making mental and physical errors.

Cleavland had all the offense and defense you could have but never had the pitching.

I'll take a team of pitching defense and good fundamental baseball over a bunch of softball players anyday.

The Sox don't have the pitching or the defense.

No they don't. But I think getting rid of Lee in a package deal for a good pitcher improves your outfield and pitching. Outfield defense would be pretty damn good with Rowand Singleton ,Maggs and Simmons as back up.

The good pitcher would have to be a young and cheap one. The outfield defense doesn't worry me, it's the infield defense that scares me.

True. It's hard to hope for what we need when we know all we're gonna get is a half ass version of it, or a hopeful.

It wouldn't be White Sox baseball if it were any different.
