Reisndorf has said he won't open his wallet again this offseason (surprise, surprise), so here is a few REALISTIC ideas to save the Sox some money to bring in some free agents with.
Let it be known we have already done one of my cost saving thoughts by releasing Herbert and Keeping Leifer in his role. One of my other thoughts, keeping Ramirez and trading Singleton is now very unlikely. That being said.
1.Liu Rodriguez over Tony Graffanino-Liu is cheaper and from his 2001 stast, probably better. Tony has his areas where he accels, but Liu can play second and SS better than Tony (liefer can play third), and Liu put up some pretty impressive batting statistics in AAA. I think Liu is a six year minor league FA so he would have to be resigned. Liu is also 3 years younger than Tony.
2.No more "lefty Specialists"-Embree and Pulsipher were expensive and horrid. While I like Embree's stuff, his control just wasn't there. Remember there are a million Wunshc's out there, we can probably steal a few from the Jays, and we still have the original.
3.Resign Bill Simas-his price will never be cheaper since he is coming off of surgery and we all saw how much we couldv've used him this year to empty the gas can.
4.One SS per season-This may be the biggest point, we are paying good money to 2 good SS. Both of them struggle in areas while standing out in others. We need to trade one so they both aren't worrying about who is starting the next day. That had to affect both of their performances last season in a negative way. My choice, is Jose, he covers a lot of ground, a strong arm (though erratic), is an offensive juggernat, and a team leader. He may make errors, but he makes a lot of thse on balls Royce wouldn't get to. Royce is a good defensive SS but he dosen't have the power or the leadership skills Jose has.
5.Don't trade the Kids-Why trade Konerko or Lee, there young superstars on the verge of busting out. I love Canseco in a Sox uniform, but not if it causes Carlos to wear an Orioles uniform. Both of these guys are cheap and going to be megastars in teh majors very soon. Trading them know would be unthinkable. We know what we get with Canseco, yes its good, but With the young guys, the sky is the limit.
These are the five easiest ways to slim down teh payroll to free up some cash for some free agents. We don't have many holes to plug. We took a major step towards this direction also by not bringing back Baines and paying him $100,000 dollars per hit over the course of a season.
