What a way to start the second half!

Nice outing for Garland grabbing his 14th victory. Great series for Aaron and our offense as a whole. Congrats to A.J. on the new career high in HR's.

And now for the Kitties...

That should answer all the critics who still think this team isn't for real. Great performances by Garland, Pods, Gooch, and AJ. This series was an impressive beat-down of a division rival that still had some hopes.

Bring on the Tiggers!

This was a big series... and the Sox looked like the team that needed a sense of urgency. I fully expected every game to be like Thursday, but the pitching and defense were awesome. Cleveland wilted... they still have a cake walk schedule the rest of the way, but they are brutal against the Central.

I think it's fair to say we ended Cleveland's chance of threatening us. They play us six more times, but three of those are the last three games of the season. They're playing for the mildcard now. (I hope they get it too. Anybody but Oakland.)

In the HUGE scheme of things it was much bigger for them then it was for us. With the wildcard hunt being as close it is, they can't afford anything like that to happen to them.

If it's possible, I think I'm even more impressed with Garland today than I was during his back-to-back CG SHO. He looked so confident out there, even when getting squeezed by the HP ump, even with 1st and 3rd and no outs...I knew he would get out of that jam somehow.

I get tired of hearing "2004 Garland gives it up there," but I also find myself marveling at the difference a year has made.

I take the Indians pitching over the Red Sox all day, we should have no problem taking 3 of 4 from them if we truly are this good (which I believe). If we dominate the Bo Sox we will finally get on the National Media map the way we deserve it.

But first comes the Tigers and the hated Magglio.

The 1998 Yankees had a losing record against the Angels. And the Angels were only 85-77 that year. The 2001 Mariners were only 10-9 against the A's, though Oakland was a good team. Some teams have trouble against a few oddball teams, even when they are otherwise dominant. I'm not comparing the Sox this year to the 1998 Yankees or the 2001 Mariners, but if those great teams could stumble against either mediocre teams, or those they face a ton, then anybody can.

The stat I like the best from this four game sweep: Zero errors. Hard to beat a team that doesn't give you more than three outs in an inning. Perhaps the most unsung aspect of this year's success. Of course, with those flat tires we've got going around, I guess it's kind of hard to see!

Yeah, I'll agree with this. The only Sox team in that Cleveland run that's worth mentioning, IMO is the 1996 team. 9 years ago right now (http://www.baseball-reference.com/games/standings.cgi?date=1996-07-17), the Sox were 2 games behind the Tribe and then completely fell apart.

I guess you could make an argument for the 1997 team; the Sox were 3 down when the White Flag Trade was made (http://www.baseball-reference.com/games/standings.cgi?date=1997-07-31) and ended up only losing 3 more games of ground on the Indians, despite having their rotation gutted and closer shipped away. I guess we'll never really know. (Yes, I'm still bitter).

I get tired of hearing "2004 Garland gives it up there," but I also find myself marveling at the difference a year has made.

If anybody would have told me that I would be saying "Congratulations to Jon Garland on his league-leading 14th victory" on July 17, I would have never taken them seriously.

We're 32 games over .500, and Jon Garland's 14-4 mark is looking like the best $3.4 million dollars that any team spent this offseason on a pitcher.

With all the talent that Kenny Williams imported this offseason, two HUGE moves revolved around re-signing guys that were already in the fold in 2004: Jon Garland and Cliff Politte.

As far as I'm concerned, Kenny Williams is, hands down, Executive of the Year.

I was at the game also. Garland gave up a lot of baserunners, but kept the ball down and in the park. The Cleveland lineup just isn't that scary without their big gun. The top two hitters are nice young players, but their 3-4-5 was Martinez (.243), Blake (.222), and Broussard (.253).

Crede concerned me. It looked like his back was hurting him when he took a big swing and failed to run out a ground ball. I know he's no speedster, but he's a lot faster than he looked on that play.
