Contreras looked sensational...

but, for me, the PLAY OF THE GAME is Aaron Rowand busting his behind to back up Pods when Pods lost a ball in the lights...and Rowand catches the high fly ball in deep left field after sprinting all the way over from medium right-centerfield. THAT's White Sox baseball.

These are the games champions are made of ... if they can get Jose to throw that way two out of every three times that will be awesome. Great to see every day Marte throw the way he did tonight - if he's back like that the bullpen just got filthier.

And it's not like they faced a clunker in Millwood. Love to see more offense but the guy is much better than his record. In a way I was glad to see Jose have to pitch like this in a game where there was no margin for error. He wasn't perfect but he didn't walk everyone and trusted his stuff and defense.

Amazing pitching by Jose C., Damaso and Dustin.

Dye and AJ look particularly lost at the plate, let's hope they fix that soon.

Aaron probably helped save the lead by backing up Pods when he lost the ball in the lights -- totally god-like defensive play there.

Anyway, back to winning ways: Priceless.

He's definitely the best one the Sox have had in eons. If he was out for himself he'd probably be hitting over .300. But all the times he's selflessly given himself up for a flyball to right or a grounder to second to get Pods to third hasn't helped his average but it sure has made a gigantic difference in the only place that matters - wins and losses.

Ya know, watching this game down the stretch (later innings), it brought back images of the Saturday night game in San Diego, where we held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the 9th, and you know what happened from there...So, at the bottom of the 8th, I couldn't take the tenseness anymore and went to the kitchen to wash dishes (still can see the TV from the kitchen tho). After hearing Hawk yell "HE GAWN!" three times, I bolted back into the front room and was more assured that we were going to win this game, that this would NOT turn into the same result as that night game in San Diego.

So, what does everyone think about JC pitching in the playoffs now??

Depends on who we face. He looks like Cy Young consistantly against some teams and 2005 Al Leiter against other teams. The problem is that two of the more likely teams have owned him so far:

Career ERA

vs Bos 13.50 in 5 starts
vs LAA 6.75 in 3 starts

but against Detroit, Cleveland, TB, KC, and other bad offenses/impatient teams, he's dominated. Impatient teams suck against him. Patient teams usually find ways to beat him.

But good effort tonight. This is a team he should have dominated and he did so. But I wont be calling for a Contreras playoff start against a Boston or Anaheim until we see him do well against them at least once. He'll certainly have that chance against Boston and may have it against Anaheim before October.

Glad to see the win. Jose seems to be doing what he always does, two outings you wanna ring his neck, followed by two GREAT outings that he's totally dominant, then back to 5-6 games of good pitching. Great way to start the second half.

JB98
07-14-2005, 11:07 PM
All the Contreras haters should consider his five victories this year:

2-1 over the Royals
2-1 over the Rockies
5-3 over the Cubs (We trailed 1-0 after seven innings in this one.)
7-2 over the Devil Rays
1-0 over the Indians

He's really had to grind for victories. The one over Tampa is the only easy 'W' he's had all year. The other four wins were the result of dominant pitching on his part. We just don't score for this guy.

Marte's return was outstanding. If we get pitching like that from him the rest of the year, that's a big plus for our bullpen.

Millwood was throwing well tonight, but we didn't capitalize on our limited opportunities. We should have had at least two in that first inning, and we wasted the Pods stolen bases. Also, Millwood hung four or five curves tonight, and our hitters fouled off all but one, which Konerko hit right to Coco Crisp for an out. Hopefully, that's just the result of three days off, and we'll get the bats going again tomorrow night against Sabathia. I'd say we're due for some luck against that guy.

Wow, I can't believe only one person, by my count, has talked about Uribe's stop at short tonight. That definitely couldve lead to bad things had he not made that grab. Great job

I agree, but Uribe's play happened early enough that we didn't realize how important it would be. Plus, Rowand's play was both great and unusual. The replay of Pods just standing there with his hands in the air was comical (because it had a happy ending).

I've watched a lot of baseball in my life and by far, Iguchi has been the BEST two hole hitter I've ever seen.I'll just assume you're too young to have seen Nellie :D:.

It was fun to listen to the Cleveland radio guys tonight. They talked a lot about how they have never seen the "bad" Contreras that they hear about, that he is always extremely tough against the Jndjans. Also, every time Podsednik got on base, they said "well, we all know what's going to happen now. A Podsednik walk or single is a double."

And now for tonight's knee-jerk reaction:

After his performance tonight, I'm not sure I want Contreras traded, even is it's for Burnett....

I think the rest of the Phillies players saw how much fun Abreu had at the Home Run Derby becuase they decided to have one of their own tonight at the expense of AJ Burnett and the Marlins. Burnett gave up 3HR and a total of 6ER over 5IP to take the loss. Let Baltimore overpay for this clown.

Or Roberto Alomar, for that matter. And I know he had to have seen Robbie.

Another great 1-run win, especially since JC never had that stretch of bad pitches that would lead to a no-decision or an L in previous months. Nice outing by the bullpen to preserve the win, especially against a lineup like the Indians have where one swing could have easily tied up the game.

However, it's a bit of a shame that the Trib's coverage of the game is so weak. Consider after reading the AP account of the game, I learned that:

- Jose had 7 Ks, Politte and Marte combined for a scoreless 9th, and Hermy got his 22nd save

- Tad scored on a double by Frank after a 1-out single and stealing 2nd

- The Sox left the bases loaded after a Dye strikeout and an AJ groundout

- Pods stole 2nd and 3rd after a bunt single but was stranded at 3rd after 2 Millwood Ks

- Uribe and Aaron had 2 great defense plays (that were nicely described in the story)

Now, from the Tribune article, I learned that:

- Tad scored on Frank's double

- Ozzie had a mandatory workout

- Florida was scouting the game and Burnett and Beckett both have issues

- Marte struck out all the batters he faced

Granted, maybe Mark Gonzales is assuming anyone who follows the Sox already knows how the game progressed or read the AP story, but still... Would it be too much to ask to get some kind of meaningful recap of the actual game, and leave some of the other stuff to a separate story?

Apologies for the tangent, feel free to move this post to a different board if needed. Anyways, it's great to start the second half like we started the season, and the double-digit lead on the Twinkies isn't half bad either.

Mercy!

I just saw an interesting stat on Contreras to date:

When he pitches on six or more days rest, he is 5-1 with a 2.47 ERA

Sure, you can massage the data to say all sorts of things, but that factoid made me go, hmmmmm……… Anyway, I wish the poor guy could get some more run support. He's really snake bit so far.

Finally, even though these nail-biters drive me nuts, I'd rather watch a game like the one tonight than be paid to sit through those silly ASG home run contests.

I totally agree about the Tribune coverage being a joke. Gonzales often goes on ridiculous tangents that don't tell you anything about what actually happened in the game.

It was a great night all the way around over at the Wsoxmike59 household.

I got home from work and quickly searched for a photo I have of the 1st Pitch ever thrown at New Comiskey Park on 4/18/91 and ran over to the Menards on 159th St in Tinley Park where Black Jack McDowell was signing autographs from 6-8 last night.

Black Jack was very friendly, posing for pictures and signing sometimes multiple items for fans. He looked like he could still be playing.

I got home and the game was in the 5th inning already and I was on the edge of my seat the whole rest of the game. Contreras and Millwood both looked very sharp, heck I'll go out on a limb and say DOMINATING at certain stretches.

Great D by Uribe on his catch of the screaming liner off the bat of Aaron Boone that would've tied the game, and a big SHOUT OUT to Aaron Rowand for tracking down the fly ball off the bat of Travis Hafner. My goodness did Aaron Rowand cover some ground out there!!!

The 'pen was outstanding last night too. Ozzie did a great job with the chess match set ups he orchestrated in the 8th and 9th innings. Cliff Politte, Damaso Marte, and In Dustin We Trustin' for gettin the job done!

This was a "1959" type of W last night, and these tight and taut 1 run ballgames are the most fun to watch for me. Each pitch and every single play has the potential to turn the ballgame around. You really have to be on your toes in these types of ballgames.

Sox are 23-9 in 1 run ballgames!!! Holy Smokes that is amazing and the sign of an OUTSTANDING PITCHING STAFF!!!!

What a job by JC. Great to see Marte in fine form again tonight. Props to Rowand for backing up Pods, Pods for the 3 SBs, The Gooch and Big Hurt, and to Uribe for the great catch. Great game all around, very tense. Its one of those games you dont appreciate til after it is over and your team one. But since it is over and we did win I can be happy and pleased by such stellar pitching and D.

Jose was sharp when he had to be. I got concerned by those early 3-2 counts. The bullpen was lights out tonight. Millwood has got to be saying to himself, 'what do I have to do to beat these guys? Throw a no - hitter???'

Lip

With his luck, he’ll probably walk someone and score on a wild pitch and we still win 1-0. :D:

Leadoff walk to Pods, steal second, Gooch groundout to the right side moves him to third, scores on Big Frank's sac fly.

One thing I was surprised to see in the print edition of today's Cubune was:

Sox magic number

Almost as if someone had been hanging around at WSI.

Those cleveland announcers were HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!

Every pop-out sounded like it was going to be a home-run.

They screamed every time a sox player swung at a pitch and missed, whether it was strike 1 or 3. You would think somebody got struck by lightning or something!!!

I'll take Rooney and Farmer any day of the week, but my XM plays the home team announcers!

That is if you only look at the raw number of remaining games. 65 wins is all the Sox need based upon their remaining schedule with the Twins.

Good job by Jose silencing all thos Contreras-haters. Great game, another one run victory over the tribe.

I admit it I'm a "Contreras-hater". I have a very bad feeling everytime he starts. I figure "we're gonna have to score some runs tonight".
This game was GREAT! Man, do I love a 1-0 game. What a way to start the second half.
Jose isn't off the hook with me yet, but I sure hope he keeps this up!:D:

for me, the PLAY OF THE GAME is Aaron Rowand busting his behind to back up Pods when Pods lost a ball in the lights...and Rowand catches the high fly ball in deep left field after sprinting all the way over from medium right-centerfield. THAT's White Sox baseball.
