I haven't seen any mention of this, but the Tribune has an editorial (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/chi-0507110125jul11,0,805980.story?coll=chi-newsopinion-hed) today congratulating Scott Podsednik on his ASG selection and congratulating the Sox and the fans for working the election.

Just want to acknowledge the Trib's message, even if the headline is a left-handed compliment.

Nice article, although Podsednik isn't some old washed-up guy in his 30's who finally made it to an All-Star Game... He's a rising star of the future still in his 20's! :D:

It's a backhanded compliment, not a left handed one.
And I think Pods is 29 and a 9 year minor leaguer...not that it matters. He certainly isn't that young.

According to the media guide, his birthday is 3/18/76...making him 29, not 30.

He's 29, 12 years in the majors.

Damn! If his mother had waited a day, I could brag that we share a birthday.

According to baseball-reference.com, he turned 29 on March 18th. Either the Trib's editorial writers didn't bother to check or they were rounding it up. The significance of all this is that Tribune published this as an editorial, not as a sports feature. And the headline is indeed a left-handed compliment coming from the Trib -- according to "The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy," under "Idioms," it defines a left-handed compliment as: "A compliment with two meanings, one of which is unflattering to the receiver." Would we expect any less from the Tribune? :D:
