Bret Boone Traded to Twins (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sports/2002373960_webboone11.html)

Just when you thought you couldn't hate this team more, you find out you were wrong.

watch - with our luck he'll go .330/25/60 for the balance.

Interesting. I know the Twinks need some pop and have a sinkhole at 2B, but Boone isn't exactly a stellar defender and is pretty much a HR/K type of guy, which are both against "Gardyball". Think Jose Valentin at 2B. Low OBP, high SLG, 100+Ks.In 2005, the Sox become more like the Twins, and the Twins make moves to become more like the 2004 Sox?:?:

or he'll continue to suck. I'm a "half-full" guy these days, so I'll go with the latter.

Now he and his brother Aaron will have sub-par seasons for teams
that finish behind the Sox in the Central.:D: :D: :D:

I agree with you about his offensive tendencies, but he is actually a teriffic defender and has won 4 Gold Gloves, including the last three years, at 2B.

Great pickup for Minny... he'll do well there. It's time for Kenny to answer this with a move of his own.

Gold Gloves or not, he's got the range of Frank Thomas circa 6 months ago, and his hands aren't all that great. He's by no means an excellent fielder, at least not the past couple of years.

EDIT: Here's his defensive stats, FWIW
Range factor: last, 2d-to-last, last (2004-2003-2002)
Zone rating: last, 14th, 5th (2004-2003-2002)

Thats the first thing that crossed my mind. This is like the Sox getting Roberto Alomar. A guy who was pretty good once, but sucks now. But still a name the fans would recognize.

Boone is a solid 2B defensively; he doesn't have much range but he is sure-handed. I still remember that webgem from last year...that barehanded toss play was unbelievable. He's better than any other option MIN has, so this was a good pickup for them (they have Rivas and Punto...that's not what I'd call threatening).

I think they may be trying to catch lightning in a bottle with this move, but I don't know if a post roids Boone has much left in the tank. He definitely has been a Sox killer in the past and will probably get more homers in the Dome than in Safeco.

Its not so desperate a move really. They give up a PTBNL and pay the veteran minimum for him. Like someone else said he is better than the options of Rivas/Punto/Rodriguez for now.

Oh. Are they hitting collectively worse than .230 and playing collectively some of the worst defense imaginable?

At least we don't have to put up with those "no-name" SOBs, Punto and Rivas, who always get RBIs against us. I was the first one who said I didn't want to see Boone go to Minnesota. I wonder when the next roids test is?

Yeah, low risk move by the Twinkies. They pay the pro-rata share (about half) on the MLB minimum of $315K, plus the ever-popular PTBNL, while the Mariners bite the bullet for the remaining $9.25M

Agreed. Outside of his magically enhanced seasons on the Mariners, he's nothing special. Just look at his numbers from 1992 to 2000, and then 2004-2005 when steroid testing started up.

Absolutely it does. But Bret Boone is better than Brett Abernathy whom they were going to call up. It's a no risk proposition. I'm of course assuming that the Twins didn't trade away "the farm" to get him. Besides, what else can they do? They've had a revolving door at second base and shortstop this year. It's a stop gap solution which only addresses one of their half dozen problems.

:gulp: It should be an upgrade over Rivas/Rodriguez/Punto/Abernathy.

Bret Boone is OOOOOLD. They should have traded for Roberto Alomar! Or hell, if they're looking for some pop, I hear Rickey Henderson is available. :D:

Ever watch Rivas play for any length of time? I think he got his first extra base hit last week. The guy sucks. Not to say Boone doesnt suck too, he just sucks less. I think i read this way the Twins can move Punto to third til Cuddyer is healthy.

The Mariners are paying pretty much all of his contract though. So for a team that has no second base production, they did not by any means get a bad deal at all (assuming this "player to be named" is nothing). I'm just glad the White Sox don't need someone like him, because Iguchi is awesome. Perhaps if this was happening last year, the White Sox would have traded for him...
