I am sure Mark is going to go 2 innings, if that. He won't qualify for the win.

Don't they have different qualifications for getting wins in the All-Star game, give the circumstances?

Congrats to Mark. Here's to six quick outs for Buehrle.

The All-Star game rules for awarding wins is different, but I haven't found good search terms in Google to determine them. Do you know how many innings you need as a starter for ASG?

OH, maybe. I wasn't aware of that. I always assumed it was treated like a normal game. If so, then yes...hopefully he will get the win.

I hope he only goes one. Better yet, pitch two-thirds, bring in Garland for the third out and get the heck out of there. Baldwin won the 2000 All-Star game. I would rather see Sox pitchers win in October.

The scoring rules that require a starter to go five for a win are suspended for the ASG because each pitcher is limited to three innings. The limit came after Lefty Gomez pitched six innings for the AL win in 1935. Mel Harder pitched the final three.

He still isn't as good as Kerry Wood though.

it's NOT official yet.... they just said so on the Comcast news update. He just talked to Francona about how many innings he could go... wait and see.

Whatever's best for the team. We need to win it because it just might mean a hell of a lot to us. Hopefully both of our guys do their jobs.

If say Mark pitched two innings and left with the lead and the N.L. didn't come back to tie the game he would get the win as the starter.

I'd assume the same logic would apply if he only went one inning.

CHICAGO -- The news delivered by manager Ozzie Guillen on Sunday morning regarding Mark Buehrle being selected as the American League's starting pitcher for Tuesday 76th All-Star Game in Detroit certainly seemed to make sense. Buehrle has been one of the most consistent hurlers in all of baseball during the 2005 campaign and ranks in the top five in no less than 12 American League statistical pitching categories.

But according to Major League Baseball and Buehrle himself, the information provided by Guillen is anything but official. Buehrle talked with the media following Guillen's briefing, but only mentioned that American League manager Terry Francona had called Sunday morning to ensure his availability for Tuesday.

"They just wanted to know since I threw [Saturday] and threw a lot of pitches, if I could pitch an inning or two in the All-Star Game," said Buehrle, who threw 112 pitches over seven innings during Saturday's loss.

It's definitely not official. Hawk and DJ referred to this several times throughout the game.

If it's unofficial, then hell no!

What do you think is going to happen when a 15 year old jumps to conclusions. Jeez. I heard the same 'report' and they made it clear that nothing was set in stone, simply that Francona was checking on Burly-Mon's availability.

Josh signed up, according to his profile, on April 29. In less than three months, he has accumulated close to 2000 posts. At this pace, he'll be passing Voodoo and Daver around Labor Day.

God Bless the boy, because we were all 15 yrs old at one time. I'm guessing Josh doesn't have a job while he's on summer vacation :D:

It's official now, they just had the press conference, Mark was a member of the panel.

Mark and Tony LaRussa are to close together, keep an eye on it KW!

I wish ESPNEWS would have shown this press conference in its entirety, but instead they have to show the rest of one of the 50 ESPNEWS replays of the day, while Sportscenter is also replaying on ESPN.

Interesting note, for those who wondered about Ozzie being one of the coaches (a reporter asked about it and seemed a little peeved that Ozzie wasn't picked), Francona said those are picked in December, and he picked Trammel because of the hometown thing and he picked Macha to pay back favrs from the past.

Who has started the ASG on the mound from the Sox?

I have MB, Loaiza, Billy Peirce and Early Wynn. Did Lyons ever start?

What I don't get is why Vlad and Teixeira are 6/7 with Ortiz and ManRam 3/4...

Ummm, no! Buerhle deserves it more than Clement. You can even make cases for Bartolo Colon or Jeremy Bonderman (who didn't make the team, kind of surprising with the hometown lore) over Clement

EDIT: Nevermind, I read you comment as Clement deserving to start. My fault, although you could still make the case for Bonderman over Clement

Way to go Mark! :gulp: It was awesome seeing him on the panel at the press conference, and it's going to be awesome to hear them announce his name, warming up in the bullpen before the game!

NO, I don't think Steve was ever a pitcher, aside from his one appearence that is. Maybe it was two counting the Cub series...

Well, I had him picked as the Cy Young winner before the season started.
Looks like I'm on the right track.

The tough thing was that I was trying to place a bet on that the day before the season started (on the internet) and I couldn't find one.

As much as it totally sucks with Halladay out (I wanted MB to beat the best, not win by default due to injuries), MB should be able to win the Cy Young if his second half is on par with his first half. He, historically, is a second half pitcher (in the sense that he gets better as the season goes on). Outside of Halladay, there really aren't that many guys even close to MB statistically speaking. Rogers, Garland, Colon, Clement... it's a race for second.

MB = ACE
