The Tribune blog site has an extremely interesting historical take on the Sox by Rahula Strohl. It stems from that ESPN Page 2 diatribe from yesterday.

Unfortunately, Strohl is full of ****. Comiskey was no tighter than the likes of Clark Griffith and a number of other owners of his (and previous) generations. Strohl should read up on the history of baseball before the Black Sox scandal.
Things like blackballing players who sought higher salaries were common occurrences in the 19th century. (See Players League.) Players often threw games before the Black Sox and it had little to do with tightwad owners. (See Chase, Hal.) Hell, even the Grand Jury that exposed the Black Sox scandal was investigating the attempt to fix a regular season Cubs game.

I liked this part better:
"Their (the Sox) longest losing streak this season is three. They're on pace to win 110 games. Incredible."
