Now the boys get a day off before hosting the Cubs. Garcia-Contreras-Garland. Wow! Three sweeps in a row is certainly possible!

Looks like a sizeable crowd of 24500+ showed up for NBN. With that the Sox attendance mark stands at 885,906, meaning they are virtually guaranteed to pass the 1,000,000 mark against the Cubs this weekend with a majority of home games still yet to be played.

I think the 83 team had a little more raw talent on the offensive side. A little more speed and more productive hitters. This team has a far better pitching staff. Tough call.

I hate to say it but the Twins aren't gonna go away. They will win their 90+ games.

Pick your winning percentage for the Sox from here on out, the Twins have to win at approximately a +.100 clip. If the Sox go .500, they'll win 94 and the Twins will have to play .600 to match. If the Sox go .550, Twins need to play .650. If the Sox play .600, Twins need to play .700.

And then realize that the Sox are currently playing almost .700 ball.

So it'll take some combo of a fairly significant Sox collapse and a fairly significant improvement for the Twins. Could happen, but the chances are low. Unless your name happens to be Joe Sheehan, in which case it's about 50-50.

I was living in Seattle the previous five seasons. What's this about Hawk shaving his head?

It all started with Pinella saying he would dye his hair any color if the Rays would win 10 in a row. They did and Pinella came through.

Someone asked Hawk what he would do if the Sox won 10 in a row, he said he would shave his head.

At a point we won 9, and then lost.

A couple of the Sox players jumped him in the locker room one day and shaved his head.

The Twins will win 90 and maybe the Indians will too. But is getting hard to imagine at this point the White Sox under 100. Even if we are held to .500 ball the rest of the way, we will 96. And I don't think we will play .500 the rest of the way.

They're right in line for that 9-3 homestand that I wanted following the great 5-1 road trip.

Almost every test that you throw at this team, they pass with flying colors. We were the first team to 20 wins, 30 wins, and 40 wins, and we're probably going to be the first team to 50 wins.

We were the first team to go 20 games over .500, and we're now knocking on the door of 30 over .500.

We're a sparkling 23-5 against our division, too.

As tempting as it is, I hate the "if the Sox played .500 from this point on" logic.

It goes against the logic of this team. The White Sox will win over 100 games this year, that's it. They will not struggle for long periods of time. They may lose a series here or there, but just figure on the fact that they will continue to win at a good pace.

This team is motivated. Their hitting is improving as well (Frank's presence in the lineup a big factor).

The thing is, if we play .500 ball for the entire second half, we'll be swept out of the first round of the playoffs like we were in 2000. Nobody wants to stumble into the postseason. Hopefully they can keep it going.

The greatest start that I've seen in my lifetime was the '84 Tigers. After 71 games, their record was: 52-19.

After 71 games, we are 49-22....only 3.0 games behind the great '84 Tigers team. Incredible.

What about that Seattle team? They wound up with 116 wins and had a really insane first half as well if I recall. What was their record after 71 games?

software limits it to 10 tags per post, but as I said in yesterday's post game thread, no team has ever fallen behind by 10 games and come back to win their division. Though I am wondering if I am misremembering that stat and it is no team has ever fallen 10 games under .500 and come back to win their division...:?:

Everett's jack was rocketted out of there...It's nice to get easy wins like this. We're 9-0 against KC now, which reminds me very much of, IIRC, 1999, when we finished 11-1 against them. We just go out and dominate them all the time.

It's time to kill the northside minor league ballclub once again.

Oh, and there was a great turnout today considering it was a mid-week day game against the Royals.

Ok, I looked up the 1984 Tigers record...

They started out 35-5, the Sox were 28-12

Through 71 games, they were 52-19, the Sox are 49-22...3 games behind

through 80 games, the Tigers were 55-25....Think our Sox could go 6-3 in the next 9?

The Tigers finished that year 99-55, and a little something else we've been waiting 88 years for

That is just amazing :gulp:

It all started with Pinella saying he would dye his hair any color if the Rays would win 10 in a row. They did and Pinella came through.

Someone asked Hawk what he would do if the Sox won 10 in a row, he said he would shave his head.

At a point we won 9, and then lost.

A couple of the Sox players jumped him in the locker room one day and shaved his head.

Actually Pinella said he would do it if they won 3 in a row...I always remember because the 3rd win was against the Sox

I was at the game when he dyed his hair. It was the highlight of the game...maybe even the season for the Rays...poor them. I just feel really bad for what their fans have to suffer through-their team really can't even compete. They have a good future in Crawford, Baldelli (when healthy), Kazmir, Upton, but they need some good players now to help the youngsters. Missing Baldelli really hurts them. Huff is decent but not a star.

Buehrle keeps showing why he will be a top competitor for the Cy Young. A #1 pitcher, a lot of wins, good winning pct., great ERA, very low WHIP. If he keeps pitching like he does, it will be a travesty if he doesn't win the Cy Young. Sure Garland has more wins, but who is pitching better?

The thing is, if we play .500 ball for the entire second half, we'll be swept out of the first round of the playoffs like we were in 2000. Nobody wants to stumble into the postseason. Hopefully they can keep it going.

The underlying reason for the bad second half and playoff disaster in 2000 was four injured starters. My fingers are crossed, but I think 3 of our guys are injury-proof.

I gotta disagree with you there. At least in the playoffs the Sox pitching was very good. They lost 3 straight because they couldn't hit.

You are trying to compare apples and ornges...baseball is different today from the 80's or the 60's.

But if you put a gun to my head I'd say the finest Sox teams I ever saw for an entire season were the clubs in 63 - 64 and 65. The 83 team was very, very, very good but the first two months were brutal.

We'll see where the 2005 version leads us.

Suggestion about the "dancing banana conundrum." (Good name for a rock band, don't you think?)

Pick a new tag to represent tens, and let the banana continue to represent ones. Thus, a 12 game lead would be "newtag, banana, banana."

Just a thought.

Some incredible stats on "Cy Buehrle":

-7+ innings in 13 of 15 starts
-8+ innings in 8/15 starts (a majority!)
-1.97 ERA at home (only 5 HR allowed at home so far vs 22 all last year)
-1.17 ERA in June
-1.52 ERA since May 8th
-0 losses since April 10 and it came against Johan Santana
-In his four straight NDs, a streak which ended 3 starts ago, he posted a 2.01 ERA
-Only 8 walks recorded since the beginning of May
-2nd in the AL in ERA (.02 behind Rogers)
-1st in IP (116)
-1st in win% (.900)
-T1 in QS (12) with Rogers
-3rd in WHIP (1.03)

And on Shingo's performance today, I think it was great what he did. 12 pitches and 11 of them were fastballs. His problems have stemmed from an inability to get ahead with his fastball. The one he showed today (which did look faster at 89 MPH) had a lot of movement, like it did last year, which set up his "frisbee." He should go out in his next outing and do the same, and then, just when people expect him to throw all fastballs, mix in the frisbee, and then he'll be back to his old ways. Getting Shingo back on track would help this team out a lot because it would reduce the need for acquiring another bullpen arm and would make it so Kenny could focus his resources on a starting pitcher instead, if the need arises (though I don't really see the desperate need because we have 4 great ones already and you only need 4 during the postseason and we're a near-lock for getting to the postseason. A lack of a 5th starter is not going to be the root cause of blowing a 10 game lead).

This team is amazing. I don't know how many different ways you can put it, but it's incredible what they've been able to do this year.
