Everytime I log on to the message boards...I see this on the Forum Information header line:

Most users ever online was 1198, 12-20-2004 at 10:17 AM.

This has been bugging me for the longest. What happened on this day that WSI was flooded with this many people ?

I'd just gotten back from a long ban, so I'd logged in and posted about 50 messages. Guess the moderators were all busy deleting them.

I've been here for awhile, and honestly have never seen the amount of active members above 600.

Sure as hell don't know why nearly 1200 logged on that day. Must have been a moment where WSI received pub from the radio or newspaper, in addition to a rumor floating around.

It was probably during on of those times when we were excited about possibly signing someone (Clement, AJ, El Duque).

We had a ridiculous number the day of the Carlos Lee trade, but that was a week earlier. 12/20 is the non-tender deadline, but I don't recall anything particularly significant happening. Maybe we were all just giddy anticipating whether Ben Davis would be re-signed.

The Lee trade day was hysterical. I don't think I actually got any work done that afternoon.

I think it was in anticipation of the "green seat" announcement.

I think all the activity had more to do with Schoeneweis being non-tendered by the Sox.

Forum user statistics can be inflated by search engine indexing. A friend of mine used to run a small board with about 80 active members, 40 of which were on regularly. One day, we had 150+ users, over 100 of which were guests and showed up in the logs as "Google Spiders".

I know we blew away the record on the day of the C. Lee trade. I always thought it remained the record. The previous (I won't use the word "prior") record was set in August, 2004 at about 2:00 A.M. after a tough loss which made the Twins a little bit too much out of reach for us and those of us who live in reality knew it was the end of the season................

I predict that the record will be shattered the day after we win the World Series this year. It will be the day after, because too many of us will be celebrating to log onto our computers................

I have absolutely no clue what any of that means. :redneck

I joined that day! (About 20 minutes after I found out about this site)

I made about 2 posts, and I remember that was right around the time of all the AJ speculation, plus the aftermath of the Lee/Podsednik trade

It was a big day, and I've been hooked since

12-20-2004- A day to be remembered :gulp:

The most "spiders" I have seen on this board at one time was just over 400.

I remember a ton of people were on WSI during the whole Nomar/A-Rod/Maggs fiasco preceding the 2004 season. Otis broke the story on WSI a full 3 weeks before the national media got a hold of it. I wonder what happened to old Otis?

Other days I can remember that were big WSI user days: Keith Foulke/Billy Koch trade and the 2001 Mike Sirotka/David Wells trade and ensuing "Shouldergate".

Nothing happened of consequence on 12-20-2004, just a lot of factors were in play. KW was shopping starting pitchers like a madman, and iirc 12-20 was the day that we were supposedly on the cusp of signing Matt Clement.

Other noteworthy events surrounding that period in time were the ChiSoxTony cellphone-at-the-airport scandal and the rumors being circulated by "Kruzer's cousin."

Amid all of this, people were all backing a variety of different pitchers and furious debate went on about who was the "right" answer.

I think the biggest portion, honestly, was the ChiSoxTony thing. Hence the infamy he has earned for himself.

I heard it was either a Matt Clement rumor or the signing of El Duque. One of those.
