View Full Version : Nothing But Nancy Day is a Wed AFTERNOON?!?

I just noticed that next Wednesday's game is a 1:00 start, then I thought about it and remembered that next Wed. is Nothing But Nancy day. I am incredibly disappointed - I really wanted to go to that. Did everyone else notice this already and I'm just the last to know or is this a surprise to many? I really wanted to go and support the concept of more organ, less crappy music, but they really aren't giving the promotion much of a chance with that start time!

I've known about the time, but I'm still disappointed. If it were even an hour later I'd be able to go.

Yea, Nancy! :supernana:Didn't expect any bananas in this thread. You should be really happy - you're not going to have to share the park with anyone either. Because there's going to be like 12,000 people there. Day after 2 1/2 price days in a row and a 1:00 start - what a horrible waste of a very good idea.

I see your point, but Nancy on the keys makes me happy and so does the dancing banana, so I'll admit it's a bit out of the ordinary but I think it's appropriate.

Will do, buddy. Still have my "Crowd Pleasing Favorites" LP, as well as a later issued cassette of hers... not to mention two pics I took of her playing the accordion at "Turn Back The Clock" day in 1990.

We need more Nancy, please!!! :D:

That's why it isn't called "Nothing but Nancy night". I knew it was a day game for weeks.

It does seem like a waste of a good idea. And no, I didn't know it was a day game either, though I don't have tickets.

edit: Realist brought up in another thread that there should have been more advertising for this Nancy promotion. WSI is the only place I've heard about this promotion.

I answered a survey tonight at the game about the "Cell" experience. Two of the questions concerned Nancy. One was how would I rate the organ music. Of course I gave it a 10 on the 1-10 scale. The other question was which did I like better, organ music or regular music. I answered with my heart and said Nancy beats the music by a mile. There were many other questions but those two stick out in my memory. What did I get for my trouble? One dollar in Comiskey Cash. Guess what-----Frank Thomas is on the one dollar bill! :D:

I'm going to Nothing But Nancy Day. I work downtown and took the afternoon off from work so that I can go. More Sox fans who work downtown should go to weekday afternoon games. I heard that Cub fans do this once and a while too.

There will actually be more people there than you think. Day game starts during the summertime will draw 20,000-25,000 because a lot of the summer camps have trips to the game and the kids are out of school. I went to a weekday day game last year and was surprised to have a crowd of 24,000 at the game.

I'll be at that game, as it's part of my Ozzie Plan.

I think that the game is a 1:05 start to accommodate the senior citizens running the bases. They strategically had senior citizen day and Nothing But Nancy day coincide.

It is too bad that they honor her with a mid week day game. I just wish they would can the stupid in between innings stuff they do now, and let Nancy entertain. Having a bunch of dopes dance on the dugout and throw socks in the stands don't make it.

I'm gonna be there on Wednesday, but the Sox kinda missed the boat by not tying Nothing But Nancy in with the "turn back the clock" uniforms that the Sox are going to be wearing today.

I may be wrong, but I don't think the Sox piped in Metallica, Whitesnake or The Ramones in 1959. Old uniforms, Nothing But Nancy and then Nancy playing through the fireworks sounds like one hell of a party to me.

I also think that Nothing But Nancy Day has been very under advertised. Nancy Faust's face should be burned onto my brain at least half as much as Joan Cusack's is.

No big story about Nancy on Comcast this past week? Where's the hype? :(:

in 1959 they Sox didn't have an organ either, so if they really wanted to turn back the clock, there would be nothing between innings. The organ arrived in 1960,

So, RadioheadRocks, just curious. Is your ultimate fantasy to have Nancy Faust join Radiohead? Perhaps she could play the organ/piano bits in songs such as Everything in its Right Place and Karma Police . . . . lol.

During the 1959 World Series they did have a band playing music in the stands between innings. I have it on tape.

This is true, and I'm pretty sure Shay Torrent was the original Comiskey Park organist (also was the longtime organist at The Big A in Anaheim). I also think there was another organist at Comiskey for a very short time before Nancy came aboard during the 1970 season.

You're right about Shay Torrent. I also think you're right about there being an organist briefly between him and Nancy, but I can't for the life of me remember who it was.

Will Nancy even be playing the organ for the player intros when they come up to bat each inning, or will they continue to use their regular pop songs?

Wasn't Nancy's mother an organist for the Sox? I seem to remember a story like that -- as I recall, Nancy was only 19 when she started working as the Sox organist (1970?). The organ was in the CF bleachers at that time and she could hardly see what was going on.

If they played pop songs when the players come up to bat, then it wouldn't be "Nothing But Nancy" Day.

Nancy started not long after graduating from college, which would have made her about 22-23. I never heard the story about her mom, though.

Could well be -- I'll dig around, though I can't remember where (or when) I'd read that info on Nancy. I had age 19 stuck in my head along with a reference to her mom doing a stint as organist with Nancy backing her up.

The facts might have faded into mythology with the passing years in my head.

I do know for a fact that Nancy is older than I am (she has told me her age), and I was 20 in 1970.

I interviewed her several years ago for a newsletter for a now defunct Sox fan club. She told me about her audition with Stu Holcomb, etc. She didn't mention her mother, though.

I have to work on Wednesday. Please ask Nancy to play Iron Butterfly's In La Gadda Da Vida (http://whitesoxinteractive.com//InLaGaddaDaVida.rm). She did it for me a few years ago and it was quite a thrill.

Sox Park is just soooooo much cooler than any other ballpark.

I heard Nancy say in an interview once that her mother was an organist, but I don't think it was for the Sox, IIRC she said her mother taught organ lessons. I also remember her saying she doesn't read music and picks up songs by ear.

Wednesday's a well-deserved and LONG overdue honor for Nancy.

Yes, Nancy's mother is an organist. I believe you're also right that she taught organ. You are right again that she plays by ear. That's one of the things that kind of drew her and my son together over the past 15 years or so, because he plays by ear, too.

I thought there was an organ-playing connection between Nancy and her mother, but I was apparently mistaken about her mom working for the Sox and about Nancy's age when she started.

Thanks, Lip & TL, for the accurate info. I brag on Nancy and the Sox whenever the topic comes up and it's good to keep the facts straight.

Since this will be my first trip to US Cellular Field and I've purchased my ticket in advance in the upper deck, I don't know if park policy allows fans holding tickets other than the lower deck to visit Nancy's booth. The Chicago White Sox will honor one of the true legends in franchise history, organist Nancy Faust, on Wednesday, when they host the Kansas City Royals at 1:05 p.m. on "Nothing But Nancy Day."

The legendary musician will get the game started that day by tossing the ceremonial first pitch, and throughout the game, fans will be treated exclusively to music direct from her keyboard. Once dubbed the "Sweetheart of Comiskey Park," Nancy Faust has been the official White Sox organist since 1970. Now in her 35th season with the club, during which she has missed a total of just five games, the lady with a quick wit and impromptu style is playing with more enthusiasm than ever.

Here is an article on Nancy in the Univ of Chicago newspaper

Then White Sox general manager Stu Holcomb hired Faust right out of college, and she made old Comiskey Park her home. She spent a couple of years playing the organ for the Bulls and the Blackhawks during the baseball off-seasons but eventually devoted her time solely to the Sox.
“The only games that I ever missed here at the park were when I gave birth to my one child, and that was in 1983–I missed five games.” Talk about the Cal Ripken of organists.
