Me and a friend found the Sox at the Marriott Hotel in San Diego Thursday and Friday night. Say what you want about timo's abilities at 1st base or elsewhere in the field, he is cool as hell. We drank and talked with him for 2 hours thursday night and it was a blast. As soon as I get the pictures developed, I'll try to post them here.
As far as I can remember, we got pictures with the following:
- Garcia (huge guy)
- Baines (quiet, but polite)
- Guillen (I told him **** Brantley and he laughed)
- Everett (likes Houston better than Chicago in terms of nightlife)
- Podsednik (definitely from Texas from the way he talks)
- Garland (polite)
- Hawk Harrelson (very cool)
- Tim Raines (jokester)
- A few others, but can't recall now, but met and talked with the following:
- Kenny Williams ('you don't win by sitting on your ass dfoing nothing')
- Jose Contreras
- Damaso Marte ('arm is good')
- Pablo Ozuna
- Juan Uribe
- AJ Pierzynski
- Frank Thomas ('Thanks for the support guys')
- Dustin Hermanson
- Paul Konerko

Needless to say, it was a very memorable trip...

Staying at the team hotel and having drinks with the players is something I've always wanted to do. That is so cool.

Between waiting for your pics and Katie Kirby's, I'm never gonna leave the computer!

That is awsome. I did the same thing in Toronto this year. Anytime I am going to see them play on the road I am going to try and hang out in the hotel bar. It is amazing how much these guys can drink before a day game. Pretty cool Pasqua. I can't wait for the pictures.

That rules,, I wanna see those pics,,, I live in L.A. and I went down to San Diego for Saturdays game, (the only loss which sucked) but I saw Mark Buerhle at the Zales Diamond Store in the downtown San Diego mall, and I saw Jermaine Dye at the Kansas City BBQ restaurant (where they filmed the famous love scene from Top Gun) he was there with his little boy.

I agree with several other posters who replied to your thread- you're SO lucky! Sounds like SoxFest San Diego Style! :bandance:

I've been down to San Diego numerous times (My uncles lives down there) and was wondering if they'd be staying at the Manchester Grand Hyatt or the Marriott- good to know they were at the Marriott. My uncle went to the games today & Friday and just had a blast both days! Though he was surrounded by Padres fans today, he joyously showed his Sox hat with pride when Rowand cranked that HR in the 10th! :bandance:

You have no idea how jealous I am. You are so lucky.

One main question, for I have read many conflicting reports. Does Timo speak English? And I hope you took pictures of Timo. I would love to see them.

Damn I love Timo.:)

I remember Rooney and Farmer saying that Timo spoke English, Spanish, and Japanese.

Then why are the Sox paying for translators for Tadahito and Shingo when they could have Timo do the job for them instead?

Rowand bought a couple rounds of beers for my brothers and I.

All the players that we ran into were very approachable-except Willie Harris and El Duque. Timo speaks great English and is cool as hell. After the game Friday night, we saw him again and he asked the girl I was with to go and get him, Ozuna, and Marte drinks. He also told her to buy a round for us. He gave her a fifty and tried to give her a tip when she came back. Timo is totally cool...:D:

Is there a way to find out where the Sox stay on the road? I remember a different thread were posters were asking where they stayed in different series since they were watching the Sox on the road, and someone was able to name the hotels, just wondering where's the source for this? I think I remember someone saying the media guide, is this just the regular program they sell at Sox games or some special guide at the park or the press gets? I'm not a stalker or anything, but it'd be so cool to have an experience like the one Pasqua is talking about if I ever follow them on a road trip if I get some time off.

I remember Rooney and Farmer saying that Timo spoke English, Spanish, and Japanese.

I have read that he spoke English fluently by Spring Training of 2001, but I have also read things where people say that he still doesn't speak English and he needs a translator.

I remember a couple of years ago when he was with the Mets he used to talk to Tsuyoshi Shinjo a lot. He was used as a translator between players and coaches at times.

Thank you very much. That finally puts an end to my Timo-English controversy. Timo gave a fifty to buy you guys a round? Awesome. He is the man. I have read on many occasions that he is hysterical, too.

My friend and I were eating at the mall and he says "there's a guy over there who looks like Carl Everett." I turn around to look and say to him "that guy doesn't look like Carl, he looks more like Willie Harris." After about two seconds my friend yells "WILLIE!" I asked him if I could get a picture, and he started talking under his breath or to Carl (he was out of sight behind a post.) They left for a couple of minutes, but decided to eat at the same place as us.

Carl sat pretty close to us and I just asked him what's up. I told him we travelled from the Chicago area to see the Sox sweep, and then he asked me where I was from. He said he didn't know where Joliet was, so I told him how Joliet has two casinos and he responded with "I don't gamble."

As we were finishing up, they were getting their food, so I decided it would be a good chance to ask Carl for a picture of him and Harris. Willie then said "who's going to take the picture?" I told him I wanted to take a picture of them together put then Willie said I should be in it and Carl chimed in with "That's the whole point of the pic." Willie was generous enough to take a picture of me with Carl, and right before he was going to take it, Carl stuck his middle finger in front of my face saying "take it now!" We all laughed and I got a pretty good picture with him.

As for El Duque, I got Hangar to ask him in Spanish to pose for a picture, and he tipped his cap to us. He also made sure to give a BP ball to a kid who got hit by a Timo BP HR. I also got Jose Contreras to wave at me when I asked him "JOSE CONTRERAS, COMO ESTA?" He smiled once he saw me wearing a Sox jersey.

Great posts... love reading the player encounter stories, always entertaining. I've got a couple myself:

- At the Sox vs. Angels series in Anaheim (Game 1) I ran in to El Duque. As I was walking into the stadium he was standing in a tunnel talking on his cell phone. I gave him a nod (in my Sox jersey) and he nodded back. He was on the DL at the time and not looking very happy.

- I went out for drinks this weekend with a guy who played A-ball with Rowand. He told some funny stories about the jobs they used to have back in the day, he and Rowand worked at a grocery store together in the summer months - Aaron was the stock boy. That cracked me up :D:

That was pretty cool that he looked at us asap after that and posed for your picture ........... What a good time that weekend was. I have so much to talk about I have no idea where to begin, he heh

Was a blast, and fun to meet a bunch of people from Soxtalk too. Good to see Longshot again and Logan and The Bull and Barry (email the pics)
Hung out with Patbooyah too, we had a good time for sure
