So who backs up Konerko now? (http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20050607&content_id=1080691&vkey=news_cws&fext=.jsp&c_id=cws)

It would be HUGE if Frank could be serviceable at 1st. Alas, I don't think that will happen.

We have off-days every Thursday this month. Konerko can rest then. Other than that, he plays every day. That simple.

This really is bad. We don't have any backup 1st baseman on the roster. If he's out for an extended period of time, look for a trade. Perez, Harris, or Everett will have to leave to clear space for a backup.

Frank's not a realistic option, so I don't want to hear it.

Three possibilities:

1. Trade
2. Thomas
3. Minor league Call-Up ?

By the way I don't want to see Gload hurt but does anyone remember him playing the outfield? EVERY ball hit his way was an adventure, Ozzie has no business even considering him for the OF especially with the glut the team already has.

Ozuna

1 game of pro experience at 1st doesn't constitute a regular back up. He's more of an emergency type back up.

I doubt it. Rogowski isn't ready. I'd rather not see Toca or Greg Norton. I think Burke would get the first call, but Gload is far better defensively than anyone in AAA. He is an asset on the bench; I hope he recovers soon.

I was surprised Timo was put at first instead of Chris Widger. Widger has 3 appearances at 1B in his career, I guess Timo played first a bit in Japan. We need a backup firstbasemen quick.

The sox have been getting along without a clear backup since around the second week of the season, I'm not too worried. I'm more upset about losing Gload as a pinch hitter, not as a first baseman since realistically he wasn't gonna get much time there except from occasionally starting or as a late inning replacement. He is obviously not gonna play outfield again any time soon if he gets injured throwing home from first base.

I think it has to be frank as a primary backup now, as long as Konerko stays healthy and off days permitting, the sox are only gonna need a backup first baseman once maybe twice a month. If something happens to Konerko long term, then they'll have to consider a trade.

If we're just talking a short term acquisition, how about Ken Harvey as a backup or Mike Sweeney if Konerko goes down and they need a starter.

If the Giants season falls apart further, JT Snow would be a decent veteran who could probably be had cheap.

Someone who I have heard being shopped around is Sean Casey of the Reds, he would certainly work well at 1st if something happened.

However, since Konerko is healthy, take your chances with frank or at first once or twice a month and keep the roster as is.

First off, I would hope Frank has made it clear to Ozzie that he will play first if needed. The Sox don't need to be forcing Thomas to play the field. He's not an everyday player, but he can fill in. The Sox should be looking for a game every couple of weeks or so.

Seeming that i am a HUGE NORTON FAN, i would love to see him called up......but not to play defense. I guess seeming that we have no other options, it wouldnt be so bad right now. BURKE could also do a pretty good job.

P.S. Does anyone know how NORTON is doing in AAA?

3. Minor league Call-Up?Lip

I suppose the team could temporarily bring up Casey Rogowski if Paulie really needs some rest. I highly doubt that would be necessary, especially with the off-days being a bit more frequent and the problems associated with having to send someone down to make roster space. Its too bad about Gload. He's an asset to this club off the bench. Hopefully he recovers quickly and the shoulder injury isn't a persistant problem all year.

Norton's hittting .277 after about 100 ABs.

I wouldn't suggest this move.
