He obviously had this little analysis in mind, especially appropriate because the Sox have the best record in MLB.

He said "Rowand is obviously a better player, yet Corey Patterson gets more attention." He seemed to suggest the media was responsible.

He also correctly noted that attention/attendance in Chicago usually came down to who had the better team (Sox were the first to draw 2 million in Chi, 83), but since the mid-80's, it's been all Flubs, due primarily to WGN making Harry a "star."

He also talked about the "abject hate" that Sox/Flubs fans feel for each other and the opposing team. And the anti-Flubs parties that were held in virtually "every bar on the South Side" during Game 7 of the 2003 NLCS following the Bartman game.

"The only thing they have in common is both have waited painfully long for a WS title."

Good to hear an honest assessment of baseball reality in Chicago.

Yup, that pretty much sums it up.

Dave Campbell interviewed for the Sox broadcast job years ago and didn't get it because he was told Sox were looking for a homer. He said he couldn't be a homer. He has integrity and apparently doesn't hold a grudge.

The Rangers fired Vince Cotroneo, a good radio announcer, after several years because he wasn't a big enough homer to suit Tom Hicks.

Baseball announcers are selected for their ability to sell the product, and selling the product can be incompatible with telling the truth.

Jon Miller was fired by the Oriole after 1996 because he was "too enthusiastic" about calling the Yankees victory over the Orioles in the ALCS (Think Jeffrey Maier). Peter Angelos is the worst owner in Major League Baseball. And there is some stiff competition.

Dave Campbell is a pro. He's knowledgable and is more interested in giving you the straight scoop than promoting himself - a novel concept in the self-absorbed world of sports broadcast "journalism."
