I have gotten a few emails from WSI types wondering what is the deal with FOX on Saturday and why fans in areas outside where FOX is sending a game "may or may not" see it in a sports bar.

A lot of it starts with

Now LOGIC would tell you that MLB would want people ( and sportsbars ) that buy EXTRA INNINGS to be able to access the regional FOX games as well. Key word in the last sentence is LOGIC.

Unlike the deal the NFL has with DirecTV, FOX would not get compensated for providing the signal, so they do not. Simple as that. MLB also tried this with XM until Infinity threatened to walked away from local radio and Selig caved.

But FOX has their own agenda concerning Saturday baseball and it concerns the local ads they sell on stations they own in respective markets. That is why the Cubs will get more games than the White Sox because WFLD can sell local ads for more $$$.

Now somebody emailed me and asked how last week they were in NY and couldn't see CWS/CHC in a bar yet yesterday sportsbars in Chicago could get Bos/NYY. Simple.

Fox has a satellite service called FoxNet that goes to cable systems not served by a Fox station close by and it always carries the main New York feed. ( except on the west coast where they put up whatever FOX LA is showing )

Also some sports bars have dishes that are canadian based ( so they can get soccer ) and they have access to Fox stations in Rochester NY, Buffalo NY, Burlington, VT, Detroit and Seattle. Those Fox stations sometimes have games not being shown in the home market.
