First, the Yankees have three games against Detroit and the Red Sox play three in Toronto, and if the recent trend continues, Boston's lead over the Yankees could shrink even more.

This season, especially, the Red Sox have to try to finish first. They can live on their wild-card laurels of last season, but the wild card may not be available this season. The Red Sox could finish second but lose out to the second-place team in the A.L. Central.

The Minnesota Twins are as good as they have been the past three years, when they won the division, but they may finish second because the Chicago White Sox are playing well. The second-place Twins and the second-place Red Sox cannot both make the playoffs. One loss, maybe a loss the Red Sox will suffer this weekend on a freakish play, could be the difference.

What's dangerous is the same article could be written about the White Sox in a month. We could lose a few here and then, let the Twins get to within a few games, and then we're a sweep away from being back in second place. Then WE'D be battle for the WC spot, not the Twinkies.

Long season for all four teams that appear to be contenders in the East and Central for three spots.
