First, the Yankees have three games against Detroit and the Red Sox play three in Toronto, and if the recent trend continues, Boston's lead over the Yankees could shrink even more.
This season, especially, the Red Sox have to try to finish first. They can live on their wild-card laurels of last season, but the wild card may not be available this season. The Red Sox could finish second but lose out to the second-place team in the A.L. Central.
