View Full Version : Is Shingo now at the end of bullpen?

Today, our bullpen rotation appears to have settled on:

LHP:

1. Marte
2. Cotts
3. Walker (will be sent down after this road trip)

RHP:

1. Hermanson
2. Politte
3. Vizcaino
4. Takatsu

Does Shingo's current role mean junk innings only?

I would say Luis and Shingo are interchangeable. You have to understand everyone in our bullpen has been quality except Shingo. He is our only weakspot right now and he should be the mop up man. It's sad to see such a fall but until he gains confidence he will be there. Shingo has the right stuff it's just if he believes in it enough to throw it.

If you take out Shingo's 3 HR game... his ERA would be a respectable 3.37. However, he has been walking way too many guys and not getting enough strikes on most batters, so I'd still agree he is the weak link right now.

Takatsu just makes me cringe every time he goes out there. He either fools the hitters completely or gets shelled. No in-between. I'm always afraid someone is going to hit one of those 68 mph floaters halfway to Gary. As long as Hermanson is getting it done (no runs given up yet!) he's your guy.

This is a tough problem to deal with because the less playing time he gets the worse he is going to be, but he's shown he can't perform as the closer. I want to have confidence in him but Hermanson, Politte, and Marte have all been good and Shingo is giving up long balls. I guess it's too bad for Shingo. I hate to see someone fall off like that, but the team keeps winning so there's only so much you can do.

All I'm going to say is that there is a LOT of baseball left this year, and Shingo had a similar, if less observed, start to last season.

Keeping in mind how Takatsu and Hermanson finished their respective seasons last year, it wouldn't shock me if Takatsu pulled off an underdog takeover of the closer position.

I agree dude. He just hasn't impressed at all. I had that 3-HR game behind me but the scab has been re-opened. I know that wasn't the Shingo norm, but we can't let this guy just sit in the pen either. Give him some work with big leads, kind of like Cotts until his confidence is regained and his stuff gets better.

I'm much more concerned about Vizcaino than Shingo.

I have seen this sentiment before on the site and I don't agree because Luis is not put into the situations Shingo is. Luis rarely, if ever, will come in with the game on the line. Shingo almost always comes in with those situations and cannot falter.
With regular work, Shingo might be just fine, but it's tough to get that work in when everyone else has been so good.

Give Shingo a break.

He hasn't been THAT bad, it's just that Dustin has been so awesome that he looks worse than he is.

And if I recall correctly, he didn't start off too hot last year. Give him some time.

Vizcaino is the guy that worries me, because it seems like he has a harder time going 1-2-3 than anyone, including Shingo.

Your rankings don't really reflect situations.

Cotts and Luis have more middle relief roles where they'll come in to pitch 1-3 innings depending on the situation. Politte may go up to 2 in some games short relief in other cases like Friday's game.

Shingo, Dustin, and Marte are short relief coming in for mostly just 1 inning. In my view Shingo's situation now is to come in for the 8th or 9th when the Sox are down a run or tied. And he may get some work in blow out games. I would consider this a very important role in the bullpen.
