View Full Version : Things Every WSI Poster should know old version

For simplicity sake. Here is the condensed version...
Do not attempt to evade the language filters. Keep the language acceptable to younger fans. Posts that attempt to use mis-spelled profanity in an attempt to circumvent the filter process will be deleted and the poster will be banned. This includes typing things like F*** and S***. Type the words you want and let the filter do it's job.
Posters of all nationalities, sex, religion and ethnicity post here. WSI is an equal opportunity website. People who post comments that harass, defame or otherwise belittle those who are different from themselves will have their messages deleted and they will be banned.
Limit your signature images to 15KB and roughly 5 square inches. If you have questions about how to determine if an image is appropriate, please post them in the Test Board. Signature images should not be pornographic nor should they include links to commercial sites or other sports message board forums. People who violate these rules will have their signature images removed and their privileges revoked.
No selling of any product for profit is allowed at WSI. If you want to trade or sell your Sox seats, you can do so in the Ticket Exchange Forum, but only at face value. People who try to use these forums to turn a profit on Sox seats will be banned for a minimum of 30 days.
Certain topics are taboo at WSI. Discussing them will earn you at least a temporary ban. These topics include:
Attendance - no one wants to hear about it. We all go to as many games as time and finances afford. Making broad sweeping generalizations about Sox fan loyalty is trolling. We don't allow trolling.
Politics: Once again, the staff is really getting tired of babysitting miscreants. From now on all political thread hijacks will receive a one week to three month banning, left to the discretion of the unfortunate staff member left to clean up the trash.
Bumping old threads that drew little or no interest by posting the word "bump" or bringing back really old threads to post something meaningless or simply typing "I agree".
Be careful with how you use copyrighted material around these parts. Violating copyright laws is a fast way to get this website in a lot of legal trouble and violators will be dealt with harshly. These violations include - but are not limited to:
selling, trading or otherwise distributing pirated copies of copyrighted material. That includes all games the White Sox played in that were taped by a member of these forums. Please do not ask if anyone can send you a copy nor offer to distribute copies you have made.
Quoting copyrighted material is covered by the "fair use clause". There are limits to what can be considered fair use for quoting articles, poetry, books, or any other copyrighted material. For most prose, such as newspaper articles, once more than about 10% of the article is quoted, you are stretching the boundaries of "fair use." The best advice is to simply give a brief synopsis of the article and post a link. If you feel you must quote, keep it very brief. Just because it is on the web doesn't make it public domain.
As the board gets bigger, threads are getting longer. This tends to put a strain on the server when threads get above 500 posts - especially if it is a popular thread which a lot of people are loading and reloading regularly. From now on, any thread that breaks 500 posts will be closed and a second thread started with a link to the original thread in the first post of the new "Thread II: Return of The Thread" thread.
Most of these rules are covered in the Code of Conduct (http://www.flyingsock.com/MainPages/ConductCode.htm) at the bottom of every forums page. Other links you may find helpful include the WSI Dictionary (http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/glossary/) where you can read up on slang terms, nicknames and other useful information. There is also an extensive list of FAQ's (http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/faq.php?faq=vb_faq#faq_vb_user_maintain) that will answer most of the technical questions you have. We also highly recommend that you check out the Home Page (http://www.flyingsock.com) where regular weekly articles and recaps of all games are posted. There are many fine features on that home page including a photo gallery (http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/4images/) where you can post your own Sox related photos if you desire and many wonderful historical articles and pictures.
Often before a situation gets out of hand, a mod or admin will attempt to contact a poster who is in danger of getting banned. Those messages will come via Private Message or E-Mail. It is your job as a poster to learn how to retrieve these messages. If you ignore the attempts by the WSI Staff to ask you to tone it down, you will still be punished. Ignorance of the warnings is no excuse to be allowed back into the forums. Keep your profile e-mail address up to date. Bad addresses cause the admins to get rejected mail notifications. You will be banned if we get notified of your bad e-mail address.
Please treat the Mods and Admins at WSI with respect. All of us do this not only for free, but actually pay for the privilege of running this site out of sheer love for the White Sox and because we enjoy having a community where everyone feels welcome to talk Sox baseball and many other topics. If a Mod or Admin asks you to stop doing something, please just do it. None of us look forward to banning people - especially long time posters, but none of us are afraid to do it if the situation calls for it.Thank you.

The Cubune has requested that we no longer hotlink images from their photo galleries. Since this can lead to legal issues for the site, please no longer do so.

If an image has been saved elsewhere on the net and is still Cubune property, please still do not use it. Yes, that includes Chad the Frat boy.

Sorry, but first and foremost we have to protect the site.

Sig Images are starting to get out of hand again. Please pay attention to the screen size limitations in addition to the bandwidth restrictions. If your signature takes up more than a few vertical inches on the screen it will be removed.

Take out some line returns if you need to, but keep all images on one line and all text on one line for the most part, small exceptions are acceptable, but don't have several lines of images and/or several lines of text.

Referring to Jon Garland as Judy will get you a few days off same with calling Frank Big Skirt. As voodoo has said numerous times we will not allow you to insult all of the female posters on these forums by implying that women are inferior to men.

It is now in writing so there is no reason for it to continue. Bans will start at a couple of days and escalate from there.

This is not up for debate.

Please take a few minutes to look around for a thread that already exists before starting a new one. This is especially true when the news is several hours old and the news is big. Please check the other forums too because often a trade rumor thread or big news for baseball but not for the Sox specifically will be in one of them.

People who repeatedly start threads on topics that already have one started will be given a 3 day rip.

In the interest of clarity, I post the following all caps rant. I'm putting it in caps because some people seem to have forgotten this basic rule and I'm hoping it will get burned into their brains after seeing it thusly.

THE ONLY TOPIC GUARANTEED TO BE LEFT OPEN ON THESE FORUMS ARE THOSE DIRECTLY RELATING TO THE CHICAGO WHITE SOX BASEBALL TEAM. ALL OFF TOPIC THREADS ARE SUBJECT TO STRICT SCRUTINY BY THE MODERATING STAFF HERE AT WSI. NO TOPIC IS GUARANTEED TO BE LEFT OPEN OR ALLOWED TO CONTINUE. THIS SITE IS FIRST AND FOREMOST A BASEBALL DISCUSSION SITE WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE WHITE SOX. OFF-TOPIC THREADS WITH LITTLE OR NO VALUE OR WHICH ADD LITTLE TO THE SITES CONTENT AND GARNER LARGE NUMBERS OF RESPONSES BY PEOPLE STRICTLY TRYING TO BULK THEIR POST COUNT WON'T LAST LONG. PEOPLE WHO START SAID THREADS REPEATEDLY WON'T EITHER.

If you want to know what kinds of threads we are referring to, go read the garbage in the Roadhouse, commonly known as the ****house around these parts. It's where stupid, pointless, self-centered, waste of bandwidth threads go to die.

This kind of stuff is getting out of hand. Somebody corrects somebody else's spelling or grammar, or says something the other person doesn't like. Name calling starts. Person who is called names gets called other names, laced with plenty of ****s and ****s.

I've closed two threads in the past 2-3 days because of this ****. It's going to stop. Now. If not, you'll find yourself on sabbatical.

If you place a tribute to a poster who has received a disciplinary sanction from the mod staff, your sig privileges will be permanently revoked (this also means no chat privileges) and you may receive a disciplinary ban yourself.

Signatures are getting obnoxiously large.

Signatures can be 1 (one) image no larger than 15K, or up to 5 (five) lines of text. This is not in addition to an image, rather in lieu of, meaning it can't be both.

If you do not bring your sig into compliance on your own, it will be done for you, if we do it for you it will probably include the removal of your sig privileges, which will also affect your ability to alter your profile and your chat privileges.

A reminder that signature images should not exceed 5 square inches. Anything larger will be removed.

Do not put youtube and other video files into your signature. They will also be removed.

Please don't publicly mention who you are adding to your ignore list. It's a form of bullying and we don't allow it here at WSI. You want to ignore someone, feel free to do so, but don't make a point of telling everyone you feel another poster is worthy of being ignored.

Violations will be dealt with like any other personal attack.

Okay, here are the updated rules for you signatures...

You are allowed pictures up to 15KB and roughly 5 square inches in size - so long as they all fit on one line.

You are also allowed up to 2 lines of text no greater than font size 4 on the font size drop down menu. You are not allowed excesive carriage returns, so even if you don't have text, you cannot have more than two blank lines below your signature. It's simply two lines, NOT two lines with 3 empty lines before, between and after. You CAN have text on the same line as your image before or after. This does not count toward the two line rule previously stated.

People who opt for an all text signature will be up to allowed 5 lines of size 4 text or 8 lines of size 2 (default size) text.

Again, it is up to you to fix your signatures. People who don't get in compliance will simply have their sig privileges revoked. You've got a week. After that, mods will be dealing with problems sigs.

This is an effort to make our boards more readable. Large signatures require excessive scrolling and add to our bandwidth requirements.

Thank you in advance.

Oh, one other thing...

Only PM me if you are completely confused. If I don't reply, consider yourself fine. I've already had a ton of PM's and would prefer not to have to answer a ton of messages.

Last Chance to get your sigs in order. After that we start removing them and/or you privileges.

Replying to any thread which you don't like the subject matter of simply to say, "why are we talking about this at WSI?" or something similar is not allowed.

Please leave the moderating to the mods. If you feel a topic is inappropriate in that it violates board policy please report the thread or post in question, but just because you don't like the topic does not mean it is taboo. You don't want to read about the Red Sox (for example) then stop clicking links to threads with the word Red Sox in the title. Anything else is considered trolling.
