Dumpster proves his value as closer by blowing a 1-run save with 2 outs in the 9th.

The Trib (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/cs-050511cubscubicle,1,7560750.htmlstory?coll=chi-sportsnew-hed)'s "From the Cubicle" feature:
Eric Valent bats. Never heard of him. Quick strike one. Valent singles to left and the Mets tie it. Wackiness! . . . Reyes pops up to Lee to end the inning. Dempster is serenaded with boos on his way back to the dugout.

:gulp: :bandance:

Imagine how bad they'd be without Derrek Lee.

Starting to remind me of the year when they had Bill Madlock winning the MVP and Sutcliffe (I think) almost getting Cy Young while coming in last with what was basically a two person roster.

It gets worse:
Dempster suffers forearm bruise
Precautionary X-rays come back negative for closer

If Dempster misses any time, and another man takes over closing duties, how many closers would that make so far for the Cubbies?

That just can't be! He has the quirky personality of a closer. He shaves his head and allegedly went streaking.

From May 10 Trib sports section, page 3: Dempster's naked truth: Never streaked. From the article: "Ryan Dempster admits he's a little wacky, but he denied a published report Monday that he was involved in a streaking episode last September outside a Lincoln Park restaurant."

Also from the article: "Asked about what qualities a closer needs, Baker said a "very important part is the closer has to be a little different. He has to be a little bit on the crazy side..."

Dempster's quirky enough to have a 58-save season.

I don't think these two guys ever were teammates on the Cubs, were they?
