Yesterday I was at the Kane County Cougars vs. Peoria Chiefs game and saw something that I just had to report on. The Chiefs, of course, are the Cubs low-level Class A club.

Here's the situation: Chiefs lead 7-4 going into the bottom of the ninth. In comes closer Ed Campusano.

Here's the bottom of the ninth: Campusano walks the first two batters. Next batter flies out. Chiefs only need to get two more and they have the win. So Campusano walks the next batter, loading the bases. Next batter singles over second base. 7-5 Chiefs.

But Campusano strikes out the next batter. One out to go for a Chiefs W. Next batter grounds to short, but the shortstop's throw is off the mark. E6, and now 7-6. Time for Campusano to bear down. So the first three pitches to the next batter are balls. Finally strike one. Then ball four. Game tied. Next batter goes 3-2. You know what had to happen. Ball four. Chiefs lose.

This guy could replace LaTroy Hawkins tomorrow and the Cubs wouldn't miss a beat.

Northside baseball fans would probably prefer a crappy A-ball closer to their current situation. Their ex-closer gets the loss and the new closer puts the game out of reach
