My guess would be the 1984 Tigers. Weren't they 35-9?

The '84 Tigers started out 35-5.

"best start" is an impossible record to determine.

Best April start? Best 2 month start?...you have to put a paramater, or else any team that started out 4-0 is tied for the best start with their 1.000 winning pct.

As far as best April, or best 40 game or whatever start, the 84 tigers probably have it locked up.

since 84 (and it was tough on me living in Michigan) I define a successful start as 35-5.

and they cleaned up in the post season too, losing only one game to the Pods, it was nice in as much as Chet Lemon got the ring with them.

the scrubs wouldn't have gotten a W against them, even if baseballs didn't dribble through 1st basemen's legs with a lead and a 16-1 Sutcliff on the mound

I think the Mariners have that locked up currently when they won 116 of the first 162 games or whatever...

You can check out things like this at http://baseball-reference.com/games/. Yes, the 1984 Tigers have the best 40-game start, two games better than the 1928 and 1933 Yankees. The 2005 Sox today tied for 13th-best 31-game start, with, among others, the 1919 White Sox. Of the nine previous teams to start 24-7, seven reached the postseason. Best 31-game start (26-5) goes to 1902 Pirates, 1911 Tigers, and 1984 Tigers.
