View Full Version : Who would you want in this play...

It's the bottom of the 9th at the Cell. The game is tied at two with two outs and a runner on second. The White Sox are a game winning hit away from taking Game Seven in the ALCS over the Minnesota Twins.

Contact. The batter smashes a drive up the middle to centerfield--Torii Hunter comes up with it cleanly and there will be a play at the plate.

My question is.

Who do you want railroading Joe Mauer and scoring the game winning run that puts us into the World Series?

And how many times would BBTN call it a 'cheap shot.'

I'll give my answer in a second, but it's between two guys methinks.

My candidate is AJ.Back up would be Burke or Rowand. .

Ross Gload or Jamie Burke. And I really think this belongs in What's the Score.

I'd think it would either be Aaron or AJ. Aaron likes hitting the walls so Mauer wouldn't be that much of a challenge. I could also see AJ sticking it to his old team.

Podsednik's the best baserunner, so I'm going with him. He'd have the most speed to hit Mauer with.

I was deciding on Aaron or AJ myself.

I also wouldn't mind Burke getting some satisfaction either. I would LOVE to see Hurt railroad Mauer, but he never has a collision at the plate (Granted if it was the ALCS, I don't doubt he'd give it his all to dislodge that ball).

Oh god Crazy Carl too...

I picked Carl mostly for this reason. When he got hit in Oakland, while walking to first base, he pointed to both of the A's middle infielders, saying, you better watch it because I'm taking one of you out.

I would get the most enjoyment with Frank knocking him out....so I picked him. AJ was a close second. Rowand is a good candidate as well.

If I knew there was going to be a collision, I'd go with Carl - I think he'd deliver the biggest hit. As far as who I'd want on the base path - Pods. Making a play on him at home would be pretty difficult.

Since you seemed to imply a collision - I went with Crazy Carl.

You're all nuts, I don't want any single one of our starters doing that so we can potentially lose an integral part of the team for the World Series. If it's not a bench player and the run is going to score a starter better not truck Maurer in that situation. Clearly if he has the plate smothered WHOEVER it is better do it, but I don't want it to happen.

Ozzie Guillen.

Coming from the dugout and blindsiding him. Is that legal?

Impying that a collision is coming, I'd go with Crazy Carl...

But I would love to see Big Frank score the clinching run

Pods. There wouldn't be a play at the plate if he was the runner on 2nd. If you're saying there has to be a play at the plate, then Everett. He's the guy I'd trust the most to barrel over the catcher. Probably Rowand second.

I picked Carl because he is the angriest looking guy on our club and he plays very aggressive. I know I wouldn't have to worry about him not going in hard. AJ or Rowand would be a close 2nd. I love Frank Thomas, but he has always been about as graceful as a buffalo sliding into home plate. He just hasn't been good at it.

1 - Rowand
2 - Everett
3 - Dye
4 - AJ

AJ would be higher, but he's sooo freaking slow.

I would have to say Mark Buehrle just because he had to drive Jamie to the hospital last year.

In this scenario, Rowand would break the catcher in half.

He's my first pick just because he's faster than the other 2 guys I'd pick, AJ and Everett.

I know it's highly unlikely given his history, but big frank standing over an opposing catcher he just leveled and stomping on home would bring a tear to my eye.

How cool would it be to just see Aaron lay out Mauer, and you know he would do it too, same as A P

i voted for scotty for the simple fact that he's so damn fast odds are, he could beat the throw to the plate... AJ is no doubt a big guy but God is he slow.

I couldn't even begin to imagine how many times Mauer would bounce after being drilled by Big Frank, kinda like using a howitzer to stop a VW Beetle.

What about Crede? He would get his second chance to barrel over Mauer. He only caught him with an elbow last time. With Crede's speed he would probably be starting at third by the time Mauer got the ball, but it would still be great to see Crede pop Mauer on the screws because he's not a small guy by any means.

Pablo Ozuna people!

You've seen his effort coming into home already this year...he'll get the job done...whatever it takes...this guy has no reserve...if he needs to locate an elbow or slide around a tag...he's my man.

A.J. would come around and knock Mauer on his royal arse.....I'll go with AJ!

Then again it's a moot point, cause Shingo would close them out in the 9th and the Sox would go away with a 4-0 victory :bandance:

AJ might be able to as well.

I have to say either Big Frank or A.J.

Ross Gload

Uhg. See game last year, Gload has chance to bowl over Twins catcher, gives up and walks into the tag. Uhg. Sure, say it's only one play, but sometimes that's all it takes.

That said, it would definitely be a sight to behold to have Frank barrelling down on home with Mauer in the way and the game on the line. I think most of us would pay to see that one.

VivaOzzie

I picked Rowand for the mere fact that if Crazy, Hurt, or AJ were on second, Ozzie would pinch run for them anyway. They wouldnt even have the chance to make the play. If Rowand were on 2nd, he has the speed, bulk, and balls to knock the crap out of Mauer.

I voted for Pods because he is the posterboy of the 2005 Sox! The phrase, "stealing a pennant" has been used before on WSI and I love it!

The real question is; how did bafiarocks get a chance to vote 6 times? :?: :D:

I'm guessing the other 5 people figure that Willie would beat the throw.

I love Frank Thomas, but I'm forced to disagree. I have seen Frank chicken out when running towards home plate. Does anyone else remember when he didn't slide against Tampa? Oh, boy, were people around here pissed.
