I was looking over the minor league stats. I found like our top-ten pitchers so far this year based on performance. Yes, it's early, but there's some names I expected and some I didn't. This was a poll for another site, and some of it is a bit surprising.

Josh Fields (Cha. 0-1, 2.38 ERA, 11 IP)

Sean Tracey (Bir. 2-1, 1.69 ERA, 25 IP, 25 K)

Jim Bullard (Bir. 2-1, 2.70 ERA, 16.2 IP)

Paulino Reynoso (Bir. 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 9.1 IP, 2 H)

Daniel Haigwood (WS 2-1, 2.08 ERA, 21.2 IP, 23 K)

Charlie Haeger (WS 3-0, 2.14 ERA, 21 IP, 16 K)

Fraser Dizard (WS 1-0, 1.93 ERA, 9.1 IP, 15 K)

Ehren Wasserman(WS 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 6.1IP, 5 SV, 1 H, 8 K)

Ray Liotta (Kan 2-0, 1.80 ERA, 25 IP, 25 K)

Gio Gonzalez (Kan 2-1, 1.23 ERA, 22 IP, 38 K)

Jeff Little (Kan 3-0, 1.93 ERA, 14 IP, 14 K)

John Hurd (Kan 1-0, 0.82 ERA, 11 IP, 3 H)

Baj was squeezed of my list, but from all indications Bullard was solid after his first start until the injury.

It's awesome how well some of these guys are doing particularly at the A level. I'm really excited about Gonzalez especially, but guys like Liotta, Tracey, Lubisich, Haigwood, Haeger and others are looking good!

Gio Gonzalez (Kan 2-1, 1.23 ERA, 22 IP, 38 K)

To the minor league experts, how were the Sox able to get Gio? He seems like a stud prospect, and I didn't think the Sox were one of the first teams to pick in the draft. I heard his mom had some problems with his baseball coach. Did that scare other teams off, or was it his stature or what? I guess I'm just trying to say that I am happy the Sox were able to get this guy.

He was a supplemental pick. I do think there were some character issues...

He was a projected mid-1st round pick (wouldn't have gone higher if not due to size/durability issues) until he got thrown off his HS team for an altercation his mom had with his HS coach. I won't go out and claim Gio to be completely innocent in this matter, either, but that is really what caused him to fall to the Supplemental round.

chicagosports.com is reporting that Wasserman has been named Carolina League pitcher of the week. Not too shabby for a walk-on!:D:

So......Honel seems to be even more of a waste of the 40 man spot after tonite.

Hopefully Honel can get back to where he was before the injury.

Honel and Malone looked to be on the fast track to the Sox and now they are far down the list. Just goes to show how unpredictable young pitching in the minors can be.:(:

I don't know why you'd say that?

Kris is still working out the kinks after missing all of last season, so you have to give the kid the benefit of the doubt. From what I've heard he's showing improvement with each start, and it seems to be showing up in the stat lines as well. If he avoids the elbow problems his control and velocity should be almost all the way back by midseason.
